players this year with 40+ games averaging 10+ minutes, sorted by worst Net rating

http://stats.nba.com/players/advanced/?sort=NET_RATING&dir=1&CF=GP*GE*40:MIN*GE*10&Season=2017-18&SeasonType=Regular%20Season

Monk is 2nd worst at -17.4. Better than only Felicio. There are no arguments for monk to get more playing time other than desire to tank and lose games or development (which i'd argue should have been happening with swarm during stretch when he was out of rotation).

by comp mcw was -3.1. not sure how there can be an argument that we'd have been better playing monk, again unless the goal was purely losing or development... which are separate arguments all-together, one at this point i think we can all agree on considering how this season went.

Monk's year in summary...

monk was really awful this year, on both sides, with horrendous shot selection and defense
he would have not helped us win by playing more, even as bad as mcw was
in hindsight, should have played more to help with tank and hopefully help his development in the process
or at least log games with swarm with his buddy bacon, who is also awful and really really should have been in g'boro
sucks we passed on mitchell, but we were all happy on draft night

Gotta give Fats credit for

1) Being very hesitant (and ultimately correct) about Monk on draft night

2) Restoring order to the thread.

We have to be realistic about this stuff or we will all just drown in misery

If you look only at the month of November, when Monk played 11 games at 14 minutes per game, he was nowhere near as bad. Frank Kaminsky and Josh Jackson are right there with him: -13.8, -13.7, -13.3. You could argue (and I did) that Kaminsky had no business being on the court the rest of the season. On the other hand, if Monk had continued to get at least 12 minutes per night, he might have had a chance to develop and contribute. His assist ratio was 21, fifth on the team. His TS% was 54, excellent for a guard. When his minutes went down, he lost confidence, and everything else went with it.

Let's face it. The coach and assistant coaches, including Mr. Silas, have no idea how to develop NBA talent.

I'm not trying to act like Monk wasn't bad this year or that if we handled him differently he would have played well, but I think it is pretty obvious that once he realized he had no role on this team and wasn't going to get meaningful minutes no matter what that he became dejected and stopped caring. The stats aren't going to be pretty when you have someone who was going to struggle regardless also dealing with frustration and loss of confidence and only getting occasional garbage time minutes that he wasn't taking seriously at all. He still struggled when he was part of the regular rotation early in the season and also since MCW went down for the season, but his focus/effort and on court approach were/are much better under those circumstances and hes certainly shown flashes of his talent.

I think if the coaching staff would have made it a point from the get go to incorporate him into a real role on this team and actually payed attention to developing him that his stats wouldn't have been quite so terrible. Our coaching staff is basically a joke though and somehow came to the conclusion that their time would be better served coddling MCW and trying to make him look like an NBA player so we can eek out 40 wins. We are one of the least (if not the least) forward thinking organizations in the league on pretty much every level.

As someone who has worked at several jobs under different bosses and situations, your environment can make a WORLD of difference. Maybe Cho is trash at drafting, but we have had quite a few lotto picks not develop under Clifford at some point it's not only the GMs fault.

I too was thrilled when Monk slid. But hen again I’m not a paid professional and a lot of those who are took someone else instead of him. They made good decisions. I’m a bargain hunter because I like value and I’m not rich. Invariably I want the top 5 pick projection sliding so I can get a deal.

Monk wasn’t good enough. Supposedly we had people who favored and were targeting Mitchell. Even Mitchell said he thought he was a Hornet. Sadly, things never seem to work out for this team on draft night.

This thread has a lot of comments about Monk, and he has been a hot topic throughout the season. Clifford is a dolt for not developing or managing him well. But, he really needed to play on our farm squad. Hope he can contribute in the future, but we missed another great opportunity.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Eoghan's Hornets' year in summary:

Monk has been terrible. He's still like the 4th least disappointing Hornet.

Malik don't need no education
Malik don't need no thought control
No film study in the class room
Coaches leave Malik alone
Hey! Clifford! Leave Malik alone
All in all he's gonna fire another brick in the game
All in all he's gonna fire another brick in the game

4-16 tonight.

In the gym you hear Clifford scream:

"Wrong, do it again!"
"If you don't make a shot, you can't have any pudding"
"How can you have any pudding if you cant make a shot?"
"You! Yes, you behind the 3 point line, stand still Monky!"

Ugh, hopefully we get rid of this guy as soon as the season ends. Trade him for a second-round pick.

Just release him today! Worst draft pick ever! He makes Anthony Bennett look like LeBron James.

How did we get stuck with this trash player? I'm so glad Cho is gone. He deserves to lose his job for picking such a pathetic excuse for a basketball player. He missed 12 SHOTS. IN ONE GAME.

No one has ever done that, least of all someone as experienced as a 19-year-old rookie. If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go fondle myself to the good old days, back when Monk wasn't on the court.

25% shooting in a game. No one, not Batum, Kemba or anyone in team history has ever shot that poorly. Ugh! What a bust! Can't get any worse!

So glad we all agree that Monk as a first-round pick was easily worse than Anthony Bennett, Alek Radojevic, PJ Hairston, Iakovos Tsakalidis, Chris Washburn, Darko Milicic, Adam Morrison, LaRue Martin and Kirk Haston. This guy's gonna be asking if you want fries with that come October.

I don't think there's a chance Monk is playing in the NBA by this time next year. He hasn't made a field goal all season.

Please come back, Cory Higgins!

Monk is so bad at scoring I'm starting to wonder if he took a vow of celibacy.

Finally, we know without a doubt the worst player to ever check into an NBA game. Monk's ceiling is a poor man's Javaris Crittenton playing hurt on a bad day.

Javaris Crittenton. Now there's someone's shot people feared...
