Fake 1st seed. Virginia is overrated every year.

I don’t follow the college season closely, but Virginia seems like the archetypical college team playing a tightly controlled game designed to make basketball as non-individualistic as possible, and UMBC just came in with NBA-style pace & space and demonstrated why that style is dominating the pros.

The fact that this contrast in styles led to the long awaited 16/1 upset, and did so in a blowout, makes me think a reckoning is coming for the college game.

They won the ACC by 4 games and won the ACC Tournament. They're a really good basketball team. They would beat UMBC 99 out of 100. Last night was the 1.

It finally happened, not that UVA is "overrated".

I haven't followed the NCAA as much since graduating college (and none this year) so I'm sure you know a whole lot more than I do. But for me it's interesting to point out that for a team that's been consistently getting high seed in these recent tournaments, they have yet to even make the Final 4 during this duration.

2014 #1 Seed, Lost to #4 Michigan State in Sweet 16
2015 #2 Seed, Lost to #7 Michigan State in 2nd Round
2016 #1 Seed, Lost to #10 Syracuse in Elite 8
2017 #5 Seed, Lost to #4 Florida in 2nd Round
2018 #1 Seed, Lost to #16 UMBC in 1st Round

Yeah this wasn't a style or fake 1 seed thing that I can tell. It was the beauty of the tournament, a team that was just not nearly as good or talented had a freakishly hot night and UVA went cold. There wasn't anything that was indicative that UMBC could do this, they'd never once beaten a ranked team. They were only very slightly the better 3 point shooting team on the season (38.3% to 39%), a much worse defensive team, and certainly less pure talent. Just great coaching and crazy hot shooting. Fun to see.

Aside from last night, the rest of that resume isn't bad. Virginia is not Duke, UNC, UK, UCLA and other "blue bloods". Those are good results for 95% of the country.

I'm glad Virginia lost. I hate watching them play and think their style is boring. This tournament just became a lot more watchable because they're out.

We don't know for sure what the result would have been if De'andre Hunter was healthy. He's their best player. I'm not going to say UMBC would have still won with a healthy De'andre. Virginia got exposed without De'andre Hunter available.

Yep, which is why I admittedly can never gauge a college player's skill level, based on what they're doing in college. Guys are asked to play out of position and really limit themselves. Then they reach the nba an free to showcase their talent
So many people who attain the heights of power in this culture—celebrities, for instance—have to make a show of false humility and modesty, as if they got as far as they did by accident and not by ego or ambition.
