Calling all optimists and pessimists!
Let's be honest here, we all want the best for our franchise. We all want the Detroit Pistons to get back to the top of the mountain. We've been semi-spoiled compared to other teams. Winning 3 titles. Well, I'm greedy. I want more!
Since this season is a wash, who's going to be our new, next General Manager?? And our new coach?
What direction would the optimists take in a non tanking fashion?
What direction would the pessimists take obviously in a more tanking type situation?
Let's hear it fellow Pistons fans!

Re: Calling all optimists and pessimists!
I've made my feelings known in the past couple of weeks. Just play it out as is for the next couple of years, even to the point of potentially trading down high picks in the next couple of years for more future picks. The goal: have a lot of draft picks and plenty of cap space to be used to rebuild the team to a level of serious contention 4-5 years from now. IMO the situation is too far gone at this point to try to rebuild on the fly. Let the dumpster fire burn itself out then start over. Maybe by then Stanley hits his prime, Luke hits his prime, Dre is still beasting and the crappy contracts are gone. I'd be fine having SVG as coach for the next couple of years but the team needs a smart GM RIGHT EFFING NOW.

Re: Calling all optimists and pessimists!
I’m honestly at the point I’m ready to go full Hinkie and trade everything. As Manacod said, we are too far gone to rebuild on the fly now. We missed on too many draft picks, failed to develop poorly and now we can add traded poorly and don’t even deserve the chance to fix our many mistakes. This offseason I would be happy to see everyone traded for whatever we can get in terms of young prospects and picks. A proper rebuild was always inevitable and we’ve needed it for a decade despite avoiding it the entire time.
I have no clue who I want here as coach and gm, I wouldn’t be opposed to Chauncey but whoever comes in I expect both personnel to place a priority on development and culture over everything else. I would also like for them to be younger as I’m sick of seeing these outdated fossils repeatedly try success stories of decades past to no avail. This is the modern NBA and I expect our new coach and gm to understand and embrace everything that means.

This is a fair strategy... if you're willing to go this far you might as well take flyers on Dre in a year or two before he expires... Blake won't be far behind so hold out for his big ass expiring deal. Is this a full blown tank?... not really if you can swing a deal or picks turn out better than expected... then you have a chance to reevaluate without starting over.

Re: Calling all optimists and pessimists!
Most important thing to do is get someone who knows how to build a team and understands Pistons championship basketball making the decisions. We don't need anybody to come and make more panic trades. We need someone to do a patient, long term cultural reset, with a consistent vision.
After that let the failure play out, get a few good draft picks in a row, let Blake try to transform his game or just let him retire a Piston with a lesser role. SVG pretty muched took the last 4 years to ruin the next 4 years. So get someone in here that will take their time and build step by step.
SVG was honest when he first came in, he said that patience was not his strength, he said he wasn't a patient guy. Well we need to fire him and find someone who has patience.
Then get a coach that is a good tactician and not stuck in late 90s basketball.

You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.

Dream GM for me is Hinkiee. Commit to a rebuild. Unload everything and start drafting and giving the guys we draft playing time.
I'd like a young unproven coach. Somebody thats a analytical thinker. None of these old school 90s coaches.
If we give them 4 years to rebuild right theirs literally no way were in a worse spot then we are right now. Only way this thing gets worse is if we do another year of SVG.

Re: Calling all optimists and pessimists!
Obviously, the team has tuned SVG out, so we need a new coach. Hopefully that's a guy who demands defense and runs a higher motion offense (like we started the year with).
Our GM needs to make much better decisions drafting and in FA. For any team, but especially a small market team, you can't afford to keep whiffing in the draft and overpaying free agents. Overall, we need to get younger and more athletic. I don't think that means a full on tank, but it means not riding mediocre vets to a couple extra wins. We need to hit on a high upside guy and you can't do that if all your playing time and roster spots are going to journeymen.
Seriously, we're looking at Bullock as guy who might improve. He's 27. Same with Ennis. Luer is 28, Galloway and Moreland are 26, Ish and Buycks are 29. Tolliver is 32 and Nelson is a 156. That's 9 guys with essentially no upside that have been in our rotation.

Re: Calling all optimists and pessimists!
As an optimist, I'm all about trying to add a piece or two to what we have. And get a new coach and GM.
As an optimist(blind faith) I have hopes Leuer can come back healthy and be our main big off our bench. Which leaves Ellenson expendable.
I have hopes RJ can come back healthy and be a top 15 PG with Ish going back to his strong role as a backup.
I have hopes Bullock and Luke can be our main shooting guards. With an emphasis on shooting. Which most definitely leaves Galloway expendable.
Our boy Stanley sure hasn't shown much. If we deal him I'm sure he blows up and becomes a great player knowing our luck lol. Maybe hold onto him and hope for improvement.
A guy like Tyreke Evans could really help us. Tellem has that connection with him.
Im not really super attached to Andre to be honest. And he definitely gets us the most value out of anyone on the team. A big wing upgrade and a serviceable center works for me

I’m still not convinced Stan’s gonna go. While this board’s in total support of it, there are others saying things like “Wait until Reggie returns” and “Wait until Stan signs a starting wing this summer...”. And if he makes it to July, he’ll lock up more money on a scrubby player for 3-4 years with the MLE. So I’ll believe it when I see it......
As for me, what would I do? Turn down the job? I mean, it’s so screwed up! I don’t see how this roster can be turned into a winner anytime soon, so yes, that puts me in the teardown camp. How would I do it? First, attach our bad contracts to our assets and trade for crappy players with short, preferably expiring contracts. Second, sit out free agency during the months of July and August. Third, sign whoever’s left to team friendly contracts - two years with team option for second year. Those are easy contracts to trade. Fourth, I also like an earlier suggestion - trade the 2019 first rounder along with any remaining crap contracts. Fifth, watch the likes of Luke and Ellenson for the foreseeable future. If they become tradable, great, dump more crap contracts with them. If I can pick up a pick or two along the way, all the better.
Then, check back after two years when you have a boatload of capspace, a high 2020 pick, and move forward from there.

I don’t think I can stomach a full on Hinkie rebuild on sucking ass for another 4-5 years... its not like these past 10 have been a joyride...
I would bet on a coaching staff that can develop our young core and build up their value. Someone like Scott Brooks if he is let go by WAS. As GM I’d give Chauncey a go

That’s an issue - it’s been a long time. But most Metro Detroiters don’t care right now anyways.
One alternative is to swap our crappy players with comparable players that might be a better fit, and use the MLE on a wing. Does that lead to a playoff series victory? Doubtful.
Another alternative is to trade Drummond and build around Blake. For many reasons, I think that would be terribly foolish.
And Chauncey? Why would he be a great GM? Because he was a champion Piston? So was Isiah Thomas, and he’s one of the all-time worst GM’s. Billups would have to surround himself with smart people like Dumars did - otherwise it could turn out to be nothing more than an ill-fated attempt to generate interest.

Re: Calling all optimists and pessimists!
I've stated my opinion a number of times on this board, so this may sound redundant.
#1) Remove the title of PBO from SVG. Fire Bower. Immediately.
#2) Break the glass ceiling and make an extremely generous offer to Doris Burke(preferrably) or Donna Orrender to clean up this mess as our new PBO. Give them a lot of leeway but with an emphasis on hiring an up-and-coming Head Coach who knows how to reach this young generation and who is very skilled at motivating them. Make it a point to have our new PBO hire a GM she can work with, who is a tough, yet charming negotiator. And make sure that she's assisted on finding the very best capologist.
#3a) However it is done - trade, waive, release - - - get rid of; Reggie Jackson, Stanley Johnson, Henry Ellenson and Jameer Nelson once the season is over... and as soon as beneficially possible.
#3b) Scour the league for an adequate PG and SF to replace 'Humpty'(RJ) and 'Somteimes'(SJ).
#4) Put the word out that Drummond and Griffin are available for Trade. At least one must go before the start of next season. Drummond would seem like the more ideal candidate. A 1st round draft pick must come with any offer... would be especially nice if it was from a team destined for a high lottery pick.
#5) Revamp the scouting department and kick out the Van Gundy leftovers. Heck, even hire a new Security team.
#6) Have the new PBO in the loop while evaluating remaining talent... and show any player the exit if they exhibit(ed) tendencies of being a one-way player.
#7) Keep fingers crossed that the Lottery Balls bring a miracle.
Remaining players should be: Reggie Bullock, Blake Griffin, Luke Kennard, Anthony Tolliver(re-sign), Ish Smith, Jon Leuer(unlikely traded), Langston Galloway(same as Leuer), [[James Ennis and Eric Moreland <---- Reserves]].
All that being said, now I will sit back and watch Gores do very little to straighten out this team. Sorry for wasting 2 minutes of your life reading this.

I am on the Anti-Hinkie route. Most teams that go that route end up just as bad if not worse. I want nothing to do with being a bottom 5 team in the league the next 4-5 years just to end up in the same position we are in right now. All he does is make sure the team loses wasting players, coaches and everyones time for years on end then prays to god he gets lucky in the draft. Sounds like gambling to me with the odds highly stacked against you.

Re: Calling all optimists and pessimists!
All signs point to Arn Tellum taking over as GM/president/whatever title they want to suit him with. He has zero experience, and some allege he put the horrible Blake trade together, not Bowers and SVG. If so, it's going to be a long ride down a dark path.
Personal pick for head shot caller- Mike Zarren, assistant GM of the Celtics. The brains behind Ainge, basically. Tons of teams have tried to hire him away from Boston, but none have enticed him. I'd pay him double what everyone else is offering, make it financially irresponsible to NOT take the job for his family's long term security.
As for coach, if SVG is gone. My gut tells me they'll go with an also-ran that can talk about how they have playoff success because they've won a few series before getting canned. Guys like George Karl, or even Lionel Hollins might pop up. This should make you cringe in agony. But, this is the route Gores will push, as he will continue to want to "win now" despite that approach working a sum total of zero seasons while he's been the owner of the Pistons, driving them into the ground. The real joke would be if Doc were finally let go from the Clippers and the Pistons hired him, really going for the Clippers 2.0.
Personal pick for a head coach replacement- I really don't want a re-run coach that's just won a few first round series, got canned, and the team inevitably performed better after his departure. I'd be more more in favor of a guy like Jerry Stackhouse, who has done well in the GLeague, is a younger guy that can relate to the players and hopefully develop the youth and instill a winning mindset into them, with a less arduous focus on X's and O's like SVG has.
A thing to note- the Bucks job is open, and that will probably be the seat that attracts the best coaches available, including David Fizdale (regardless of anyone's opinion on his actual coaching acumen). I think a less in demand quantity like Stack could be a sly pickup, and he's already proven he can do it at the minor league level, where getting guys to play as a team is near impossible.

Wow! I've never heard that! If that's true then maybe this trade finally makes sense to me. Stan and Bower have been incredible with trades until this one.

We've already seen what a Blake led team looks like this season and in the past 3 seasons while Blake played and CP3 didnt play. The clippers were really bad without CP3 but Blake playing since 2014. Blake had Gallo,Lou,DAJ,and Rivers this season and they were a 500 team. So if we build around Blake were going to be a 500 or so team. This is exactly why West traded Blake because hes not the type of guy you can win with without having another top 10 player around. That was a younger Blake we got the Blake of the next 4 seasons where hes going to for sure decline some.

I can't stomach this team being a homeless man's Clippers 2.0 for the next few years. Even that team took everything they had to just win round 1 and get blown to bits by the Rockets. It has no purposeful ceiling and I pity anyone that thinks that is fun basketball.
Hire Hinkie and let him have full autonomy. Or hire someone that was a main adviser to Hinkie. Since Hinkie is most likely blackballed by Adam Silver for tanking. Which is stupid.

I think the most reputable source I've seen mention this has been Marc Stein, and even then I don't think he could solidly say who the architect was. But, given SVG's history, he has always wanted 4's that can shoot the long ball. He wanted them in Orlando and has always used them in Detroit, with Ilyasova, Harris and Tolliver.

Re: Calling all optimists and pessimists!
We have so many contracts that expire in 2020, so the plan becomes to trade for others and start the rebuild in summer, 2020. Two possibilities.......
Drummond for Noah, Mudiay and first rounders in 2020 and 2022. If we're tearing it down, who says no?
or
Griffin for Noah, Thomas, Mudiay, and first rounders in 2020 and 2022. Again, with the Knicks extending Porzingis in the near future, they'd be delighted to add a top 30 player to the fold, and if the price to dump Noah and Thomas is two first rounders and a flier on Mudiay, why wouldn't they?
Griffin and Drummond are two assets, and the only two players with contracts beyond 2020. So trading at least one of them for picks and 2020 expirings makes sense to me.......

I would ABSOLUTELY take a flyer on Dre as an expiring. I don’t look at making moves that leave the team with less talent/wins in the short term as tanking; that’s what the rebuild process requires. Tanking to me would be piling up talent and leaving it on the bench in order to accrue more losses and get more talent. Intentionally not try to win within the game itself is tanking; not taking trade/draft actions that may lead to more losses in the short term for the purpose of building a champion later.
