I've looked into joining it. There's a lot of conspiracy theories behind it, but on their website, they seem pretty normal, and even state that you're going to be very disappointed if you expect to be inducted into some secret society like what's talked about in the conspiracy theories. Recounting from the top of my head: it's just a fraternity with the intent of helping out your fellow man. Anyone can join so long as you subscribe to a monotheist religion. They have a location (called "Lodge") here near my house in Miami.

There was one particular incident where a man was shot dead in a botched initiation: http://www.foxnews.com/story/2004/03/09/man-killed-during-initiation-at-masonic-lodge.html

I would imagine this isn't common or else we'd hear a lot more about it.

Although it's probably not kosher to view it as such, I'm sure there's a huge benefit to joining in terms of the connections you make. Many powerful people, including Presidents, have been Freemasons.

I've been visiting with various lodges in recent weeks and months to have some questions answered and to express my curiosity. All of that secret society stuff is hogwash. Really shapes out to be a group of good dudes coming together in fraternity. There's ritual, yes, but it's not unlike the traditions that other fraternities perform, though unique and ancient in their own special way.

Honestly, I just love the idea of fraternity, personal/collective improvement, and always having a home no matter where you go in the world. Charity, philanthropy, community work, etc. It's all very appealing. All the masons I've had the pleasure of meeting strike me as individuals I wouldn't mind hanging out with, whether Blue Lodge or Prince Hall.

I agree with you on all of that. I'm always interested in helping out others when I can and uplifting them. Usually, people who feel the same way are good people. Being around good people while helping others is a fulfilling feeling in life. And you're right about 'always having a home anywhere in the world'; it's cool to know you've got friends that will lend a hand in some way whom you may not even know, yet.

If you do join, let us know how it goes.

I don't mind sharing whatever information I'm at liberty to divulge if it helps change the fraternity's perceptions in the minds of certain people for the better. I understand the peculiar history of anti-Masonry, for example. How many fraternities are so feared (or envied) by certain members of the general public that whole churches and political parties are either formed or raised up against what they perceive to be a threat to the safety and security of a society?

It's all so fascinating.

Yeah, I wouldn't expect any details, just some general thoughts. And yeah, the misconceptions make it pretty intriguing and fascinating.

São Paulo lost their game over the weekend. 1x0 to São Caetano.
Under heavy rain, tonight they are playing again. 18 minutes in the second half, we just scored the tying goal!
25 minutes to play.
Right now it will go to penalties.

Need one more goal to not have chest attack.

Gol de Diego Souza. Lucas Fernandes recebe uma linda bola de Nenê, faz o cruzamento na medida para Diego Souza cabecear no canto de Paes. A bola bate na trave e vai para o fundo das redes.

We are in the semi-finals. After losing the first game, there were many fans disappointed -- Only 17,800 fans today in the thunderstorm.

Santos plays tomorrow. They need to win to avoid penalties. Their first game was 0x0 in Riberão Preto. Palmeiras won their game over the weekend 3x0 and play without pressure at home with 3 goals of advantage.

Bragantino has a one-goal advantage on Corinthians after winning 3x2. The game will be a massive pressure cooker.

History:

Though there are 16 teams in the Campeonato Paulista this year and have been more than 30 before, most of the titles have been won by only a few:

Corinthians is the historic leader with 28 championships and 21 runners-up.
Palmeiras has 22 championships and 23 runners-up.
Santos has 22 championships and 11 runners-up.
São Paulo has 21 and 16 runners-up

Before 1930 there were several other strong teams, including Paulistano (11 championships, 10 runners up, including 4 in a row from 1916 through 1919).

Recently a few stronger teams from the “interior” (not from the metropolitan area of São Paulo or Santos) have won. São Caetano in 2004, Ituano in 2002 & 2014 (!), Bragantino in 1990, and Internacional de Limeira in 1986. Bragantino & São Caetano were in the quarter finals this year.

Although this is not a national championship, the battles between the top teams are often great games. Regional rivalry is fierce. Everyone wants bragging rights. The fact that São Paulo (2005) and Palmeiras (2008) have been denied so many years weighs heavily.

Here is a summary of this century’s championships, including champion and runners-up, as well as the position of the top teams when they were not involved.

There is generally a classification phase and knockout phase.

2017
Corinthians - Champion (28th title) (1st in classification)
Ponte Preta - 2nd (2nd in classification)

Palmeiras (3rd in classification, knocked out by Ponte Preta in semi-finals)

2016
Santos - Champion (22nd title) (1st in classification)
Audax - 2nd

Corinthians (3rd in classification, knocked out in semifinals)
Palmeiras (4th in classification, knocked out in semifinals by Santos)
São Paulo (8th in classfiication, knocked out in quarter finals by Audax)

Palmeiras - 2nd (2nd in classifiation)

Corinthians (3rd in classification, Palmeiras eliminated in semifinals)
São Paulo (4th in classification, Santos eliminated in semifinals)

2014
Ituano - Champion (2nd Title) (3rd in classification)
Santos - 2nd (1st in classification)

Corinthians (9th) Did not qualify.
Palmeiras (3rd) Eliminated in semifinas.
São Paulo (6th) Eliminated in quarterfinals.

2013

Corinthians (1st in classification, knocked out by Ponte Preta in quarter finals)
Palmeiras (5th in classification, knocked out by Guarani in quarter finals)
São Paulo (2nd in classification, knocked out by Santos in semifinals)

2011
Santos - Champion (19th title) (4th in classification)
Corinthians - 2nd (3rd in classification)

Palmeiras (2nd in classification, knocked out by Corinthians in semifinal)
São Paulo (1st in classification, knocked out by Santos in semifinal)

2010
Santos - Champion (18th title) (1st in classification)
Santo Andre - 2nd (2nd in classification)

Corinthians (5th in classification, did not qualify)
Palmeiras (11th in classification, did not qualify)
São Paulo (4th in classification, eliminated by Santos in semifinals.

Only semifinals and final in 2010.

2009
Corinthians - Champion (26th title) (3rd in classification)
Santos - 2nd (4th in classification)

Palmeiras (1st in classification, eliminated by Santos)
São Paulo (2nd in classification, eliminated by Corinthians)

No quarter finals. Only semifinals and final in 2009.

2008
Palmeiras - Champion (22nd title) (2nd in classification)
Ponte Preta - 2nd (4th in classification)

Corinthians (5th in classification, did not qualify)
Santos (7th in classification, did not qualify)
São Paulo (3rd in classification, eliminated by Palmeiras in SemiFinal)

Guaratinguetá had best record in classification phase.
No quarter finals. Only semifinals and final in 2008.

2007
Santos - Champion (17th title)
São Caetano - 2nd

Corinthians (9th in classification, did not qualify)
Palmeiras (5th in classification, did not qualify)
São Paulo (2nd in classification, eliminated by São Caetano!)

No quarter finals. Only semifinals and final in 2008.

2006
Santos - Champion (16th title)
São Paulo - 2nd

Corinthians (6th)
Palmeiras (3rd)

No knockout round phase. Winner was best classification phase.

2005
São Paulo - Champion (21st title)
Corinthians - 2nd

Palmeiras (9th)
Santos (3rd)

No knockout round phase. Winner was best classification phase.

2004
São Caetano - Champion (1st title)
Paulista - 2nd

Corinthians (almost relegated!!!)
Palmeiras (3rd in group B, eliminated by Paulista in semi finals)
Santos (1st in group B, eliminated by São Caetano in semi finals)
São Paulo (1st in group A, eliminated by São Caetano in quarter finals!!!)

Weird one. Two groups. Top 4 of each group move to quarter finals.
São Paulo, Portuguesa Santista, Ponte Preta, União Barbarense in one group.
Santos, Paulista, Palmeiras, and São Caetano in 2nd group.

2003
Corinthians - Champion (25th title)
São Paulo - 2nd

3 groups of seven teams each.
Group 1: União Barbarense, Guarani, and Palmeiras classify.
Group 2: Portuguesa Santista, São Paulo, and Santo André classify.
Group 3: São Caetano and Corinthians classify.

Santos finished 4th in group 2 and did not qualify.
Corinthians beat Palmeiras in the semi finals.

2002
Ituano - Champion (1st Title (but read below))
União São João

Corinthians, Palmeiras, Santos, and São Paulo did not play.
Instead, they played a super championship with the best teams of Rio.
Ituano won a berth in the super championship and was knocked out in the finals.

Corinthians was knocked out by Ituano in the semifinals of the superchampionship.
Palmeiras was knocked out by São Paulo in the smifinals.
Santos did not qualify.

São Paulo won the super championship.

2001
Corinthians - Champion (24th Title, 3rd in classification)
Botafogo - Riberão Preto - 2nd (4th in classification)

Palmeiras (7th in classification)
Santos (2nd in classification, eliminated by Corinthians in semifinal)
São Paulo (8th in classification)

Classification phase followed by semifinals and finals, 2 legs each.

2000
São Paulo - Champion (20th Title)
Santos - 2nd

It’s complicated. The Rio-São Paulo tournament had precedence at this time and lots of small teams were included in the Campeonato Paulista. There were three phases to the championship befor it settled on 8 teams (predictable ones): Santos, São Paulo, Portuguesa, and Guarani in one group. Corinthians, Palmeiras, Ponte Preta, and (surprise entry) Rio Branco in the other.

Palmeiras
Santos

Semifinal: Santos and Palmeiras drew and then Santos beat Palmeiras.
São Paulo beat Corinthians twice.

São Paulo beat Santos in the final (1-0 and then they drew 2-2)

Why can't I have both?

To be honest, São Paulo has very little chance. Just getting past the quarterfinals with our poor team is a triumph. I guess it depends on who we are matched up with in the playoffs. I would love to eliminate the Pacers, Celtics, or Cavs. Is that what you mean? I am less enthusiastic about the Raptors, 76ers, or Wizards. Is there another team in the Eastern Conference playoffs?

If São Paulo did win the championship, it would be the first time since 2005, and our first championship of *any* kind since the Sulamericano in 2012, so yeah, I'd take a title of the Paulista over getting to the second round of the Eastern Conference. It's not going to happen though.

Goodluck on the semi-finals! I love the tournament format. Very exciting (more chest-hurting than 7 game format though lol). Hope your chest can hold up gom. lol

I feel that it's getting more likely that we'll face one of the Pacers, Celtics, or Cavs.. meaning that we'll end up in 6th or 7th seed. A lot depends on our next 3 games (tough ones vs OKC and Indy coming up) but yeah we won't probably face the current 8th seed Bucks. I'm not going to say more since I seem to jinx a lot (lol) but it will be pretty exiting too gom :)

São Paulo also owns its own stadium. They were given the land by the city in 1951 and built it during the 1960s (a very difficult time competitively for us because we had no money for players.)

This is the stadium of Morumbi. It is almost 60 years old since it opened.

Image

The stadium was opened with a capacity of 70,000 people. In 1970, it changed to 140,000 but was later reduced to 80,000. It's the largest private stadium in Brazil.

Santos 0x0 Botafogo de Ribeirão Preto at the half.

Santos (playing in Vila Belmiro, their home stadium) needs to win the game to avoid a penalty shootout. Botafogo plays defense and attempts surprise counterattacks. Santos's midfield so far is very strong, but Gabigol, their star striker, isn't finishing well. Lots of time yet, though.

It's amazing how Santos always has great strikers. Neymar, Robinho, Gabigol, Elano, and (of course) Pelé were or are all stars in the coastal port of São Paulo. It will be ironic today if they lose because they cannot score!

Check out this article about famous Brazilian strikers:

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2082099-ranking-brazils-20-greatest-strikers-of-all-time

Serginho Chulapa, Leonidas da Silva, and Careca were all great players for São Paulo.

Also on that list: Arthur Friedenreich, who played on São Paulo from 1930-1935. He was the first great black footballer in Brazil to be well-known. He made impossible plays.

One more: Luis Fabiano was a star São Paulo player. He is still active in Europe. He is also the most expensive player we have repatriated. His return was not so good. Fans were angry for him because in 2006 he could have failed to score one goal and sent Corinthians to the second division. They got there anyway later on.

Ha. Ha. Ha.

I just read 8. Seven boys, and a girl. Four actors, one ICU physician, a model, and two who aren't even ten yet. That, and their father is a pretty famous actor too. What a family.
