Updating on the Paulista:

1st game was a win of Palmeiras against Santos. (1-0 Palmeiras)
1st game of the other series (the one I most care about) gave São Paulo their first victory over Corinthians in a long, long time: 1-0

2nd game of the series is in progress now (Santos is leading 2-1). If the score continues, the game goes to penalties.

Update: Penalties!!! Palmeiras wins 5-3.

Palmeiras is the first finalist of the São Paulo state championship.

BIG game tomorrow: São Paulo plays Corinthians in their arena, in front of a huge crowd (probably 85% their fans). This game means so much. We haven't beaten Corinthians EVER in their arena.

We have a 1-0 lead in the series. Our victory or a draw guarantees our classification in the finals. A difference of one goal in their behalf takes us to penalty shootout. If they win by more than one goal, we will be eliminated.

Winner plays Palmeiras in a 2-game series. I think Corinthians is slightly better than São Paulo. Palmeiras is much better. Our team plays with more heart though.

Just to amplify the significance of the game tonight, how much a victory would mean, and how much I expect to lose.

Tonight, 8:45 EST, São Paulo plays for a draw against Corinthians (our arch-rival) to meet Palmeiras (another rival) in the 2-game final series. The game will be played in Corinthians's stadium, where we have never won. Also, lately we do not have a great track record either against Corinthians or in semifinals:

Elimination games since 2000 (when we won) versus Corinthians: (0-7)

Final – Rio-São Paulo – 2002
São Paulo 2 x 3 Corinthians
Corinthians 1 x 1 São Paulo

Semifinal – Copa do Brasil – 2002
São Paulo 0 x 2 Corinthians
Corinthians 1 x 2 São Paulo

Final – Paulistão – 2003
Corinthians 3 x 2 São Paulo
São Paulo 2 x 3 Corinthians

Semifinal – Paulistão – 2009
Corinthians 2 x 1 São Paulo
São Paulo 0 x 2 Corinthians

Semifinal – Paulistão – 2013
São Paulo (3) 0 x 0 (4) Corinthians

Final – Recopa – 2013
São Paulo 1 x 2 Corinthians
Corinthians 2 x 0 São Paulo

Semifinal – Paulista – 2017
São Paulo 0 x 2 Corinthians
Corinthians 1 x 1 São Paulo

Our recent semi final performance: (elimination to São Caetano, Palmeiras, Corinthians, Santos, Santos, Santos, Corinthians, Santos, & Corinthians).

2007
São Caetano 1 x 1 São Paulo
São Paulo 1 x 4 São Caetano

2008
São Paulo 2 x 1 Palmeiras
Palmeiras 2 x 0 São Paulo

2009
Corinthians 2 x 1 São Paulo
São Paulo 0 x 2 Corinthians

2010
São Paulo 2 x 3 Santos
Santos 3 x 0 São Paulo

2011
São Paulo 0 x 2 Santos

2012
São Paulo 1 x 3 Santos

2013
São Paulo 0 (3) x 0 (4) Corinthians

2015
Santos 2 x 1 São Paulo

2017
São Paulo 0 x 2 Corinthians
Corinthians 1 x 1 São Paulo

Our games in the Arena Corinthians: (0 wins, 2 draws, 5 losses)

Campeonato Brasileiro – 2014
Corinthians 3 x 2 São Paulo

2015 – Copa Libertadores
Corinthians 2 x 0 São Paulo

2015 – Campeonato Brasileiro
Corinthians 6 x 1 São Paulo

2016 – Campeonato Paulista
Corinthians 2 x 0 São Paulo

2016 – Campeonato Brasileiro
Corinthians 1 x 1 São Paulo

2017 – Campeonato Paulista
Corinthians 1 x 1 São Paulo

2017 – Campeonato Brasileiro
Corinthians 3 x 2 São Paulo

----
Let's get the win.

Ok, so I may have given the impression that we lose a lot and have lost a lot of championships. To an extent that is true... right now, but São Paulo has an incredible story.

Consider:

São Paulo won the Brazilian championship 6 times: 1977, 1986, 1991, 2006, 2007, 2008 (yes, the last 3 were 3 in a row)
São Paulo won the principal Latin America international competition, Taça Libertadores, 3 times: 1992, 1993, 2005 (just before going 3 in a row in Brazil)

and

São Paulo is club champion of the world 3 times: 1992, 1993, 2005

We beat Barcelona 2-1 in 1992, Milan 3-2 in 1993, and Liverpool 1-0 in 2005.

That is bad ass.

We also won the Rio-São Paulo championship in 2001. That's when Kaká emerged on São Paulo from the youth team. Here are some of his highlights against Botafogo in the final:

Tonight, I am counting on a team that fights hard and destroys Corinthians and their fans' hope. Here is a video of Corinthians fans crying when their team was relegated:

This is beautiful.

You can follow the game here:

http://globoesporte.globo.com/sp/futebol/campeonato-paulista/jogo/28-03-2018/corinthians-sao-paulo/

Our greatest idol was our goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni. You can see him circled by the players in 2012:

Image

He played his entire career in São Paulo. 1257 games career, 1237 with São Paulo. 20 titles. He scored 131 goals, both from penalty mark and free kicks.

Another of our idols, Diego Lugano:

Image

Both world champions of clubs. Lugano is part of the club front office now, along with Raí and Ricardo Rocha, both heroes of our 90s teams.

Cení was our football manager (head coach) in 2016. It did not go well.

Corinthians made a horrendous foul against Trellez, our center striker when he was already out of bounds. Now the teams are fighting each other, just shoving and stuff.

0-0 at the half.

Dying here.

Possessions: Corinthians 68% x 32% São Paulo
Shots on goal: 5 x 3
Real chances: 2 x 1
Balls in the penalty box: 11 x 4
Corners: 2 x 2
Fouls: 5 x 8
Good passes: 179 x 56
Bad passes: 16 x 17
Offside: 2 x 0

We are on defense almost the entire game.
