Bold prediction - the Magic will turn that 40th pick into a PG. That PG will end up being better than Elfrid Payton.

would prefer Brunson over Carter.

June 26, 2014: Traded by the Philadelphia 76ers to the Orlando Magic for Dario Saric, a 2015 2nd round draft pick (Willy Hernangomez was later selected) and a 2017 1st round draft pick (De'Aaron Fox was later selected).

The 2017 first round pick is actually a 2018 first round pick as this is the year it would have fallen out of it's protection.

Still, it was horrible how Rob Hennigan did not hold his ground and let Sam Hinkie extort like he did.

I guess Henny had a mancrush on Elfrid and really thought he will be something special.

That and he did not have a backup plan. Always have a back up plan. Rob put it all in his Elfrid basket.

Our PG's on roster during EP's years :
14-15 Season: Dipo (true SG) Ridnour
15-16 Season: Appling, Watson, Napier, Jennings
16-17 Season : DJ, Watson

Yet still, Elfrid got himself benched couple of times last few years.

Looks like Elfrid is losing minutes to Ulis now. He has been non-existent against the Celtics tonight.

He’s clearly not even trying. I wonder what is up.

Could PHX have already told him they will bring him back but need him to play out the tank?

Could he hate PHX so much that he’s willing to look unappetizing so that they won’t resign him, sacrificing contract money for a roll of the dice in FA?

Mental health issues? Wiggins mode where he is content just collecting a paycheck (albeit a much smaller one)?

So strange. I mean - we’ve not seen him EVER disappear to this extent. He shows up predictably and puts in effort against us and then it’s back to the garbage can?

We should bench Payton and run with Ulis/Shaq for the rest of the season. Elf clearly has no future in Phoenix. Super lazy bum.

yikes.... yeah its a fan hot take but this is not a good look. I wouldn't be shocked if PHX has told him they're not resigning him so he is down in the dumps. Crazy thing is he could be playing his way out of an NBA contract and onto a 2 way player contract pretty soon.

Not really sure to be honest. I was watching that game up until Boston pulled away and the time he was out there, he was just there. He didn't impact the game whatsoever on either side of the ball and he displayed some awful body language. Ulis on the other hand was playing like a guy who wants to stick in the NBA and take advantage of the opportunity he is now given hence why Triano played him more and probably will so in the future. To be playing with virtually no enthusiasm in a contract year is a major red flag.

Maybe he does have some mental issues he is going through. Only Elfrid knows. At this point, I just see a player who is happy to be in the NBA and nothing more. A shame because he does have talent. Just doesn't really care much to reach that talent.

He's not tanking his own value... aside from stupidly throwing away millions, it would also make it harder for a flawed PG like him to land a starting job elsewhere. And Nobody is asking him to miss shots and to not play aggressively in a rookie contract year... that is all him.

From various Phoenix sports beat writers...
“I didn’t think we were getting much out of Elfrid,” Triano said following Phoenix’s ninth straight loss and 23rd in its last 25 games. “I thought in transition (there was a) bad decision. Two defensive coverages in a row. I’m going to hold these guys accountable. If you mess up, I’ve got to get somebody in who is going to play the right way.”

Triano shared his thoughts on what has changed regarding Payton lately.

“I think the numbers are what’s down,” he said. “Just seems like teams have kind of figured him out a little bit. They’re sitting back on him and he’s hesitant to shoot the basketball.

“He’s got to play like he did when he first got here, when he was aggressive going to the basket and figuring out how to get lanes and avenues to the rim.”

If you didn't watch the Suns game last night - 3:33 left fourth quarter. Elfrid "Lazy" Payton got beat down the court by Luke Kennard for an easy layup after Payton's shot was blocked. Triano benched him and rightfully so. There was a reason Orlando gave this guy up for NOTHING.

Payton has played just 17 minutes. Pretty obvious Triano not liking defensive breakdowns, inability to do anything offensively.

Send Elfrid into orbit, please

Nothing surprising... these are all the same criticisms he had here and it's yet another coach getting on him for his motor, defense and shooting. It's just that those flaws are exposed even more on a worse team and he no longer has the crutch of being in his comfort zone with guys he's played with for years. He also doesn't play well when his confidence is down and he hangs his head... he doesn't respond well when he's challenged by a coach either. The Suns didn't invest much in him (assets or time), so he knows he's on thin ice with management and fans alike... might not be handling that pressure too well.

Said it a while back, but I think the best thing that could happen to Payton's career is to probably be traded a couple times, lose money and play off the bench until he decides he wants more for himself... he doesn't take his job seriously enough right now and needs a couple wakeup calls.

Man Rob should have listened to Skiles and sent Payton packing when he still had value. He still has the same issue Skiles chastised him about, difference is he is veteran now and can't use the young player excuse anymore. What a horrible move that turn out to be.

I'd love to pick Henny's brain and figure out WTF he ever saw in him. He went down with the ship on the USS Elfrid instead of saving his own ass. Instead Henny's career died on that hill and now he's got whatever stupid, fancy title OKC gave him that's code for janitor.

It's amazing that Elf wore his welcome out in 16 games. I was telling people that the Suns would regret it if they made this guy their starter, but I didn't expect him to get called out this quickly. The gig is up for Elf unfortunately. He is not going to get much of a payday at all at this rate.

I still say good trade by the magic if they can turn that 2nd into something.
