While a lot of people have jumped on the OP for his over-the-top statement to start the debate, and he generally does a pretty good job bringing on further abuse in all his threads, Olynyk has almost certainly been a top 20 Center this season. He’s been quite good although under-the-radar, and better than he ever was in Boston.

Another under-the-radar top 20 Center this season has been Poeltl. Defensive monster, smart, quality passer, efficient finisher.

I thought this was a troll thread, but I see he is one determined Heat fan.

A "Top 20" center is just a nice way of saying "below average" starting center. And certainly, not many people will disagree that Kelly Olynyk is indeed a below average starting center in this league.

If you feel the need to look at top 20 at a specific position which likely projects to top 100 in a league of 510 players and put a negative spin on it, that’s your prerogative.

The league isn’t full of just great players and scrubs, most players fit somewhere in the middle and solid rotation players on playoff level teams are valuable players and Olynyk has undoubtedly been a valuable player this season.

He reminds me so much of Luis Scola. I like Olynk's game a lot for some reason

And then you have guys you can argue like Gortat, Kanter, Brooklyn's promising Allen, Noel, Monroe, C.Zeller, Atlanta's promising Collins, etc.

Olynyk has never been on my liked list, but he's better than guys who can't get on the floor and I think Zeller is underrated.

Olynyk has been wonderful for us this year. Excellent role player. Really happy to have him. He's a floor spacer, very intelligent player, and perfect for our system. That being said, he is by no means a top 10 center. You could make the case that he's the best backup center in the league, or that he could start for a handful of teams, but he's not top 10. No shame in that. He's really good (in spite of what some in this thread are maintaining) but let's not get ridiculous.

He's an excellent rotation player on a pretty good team. Just enjoy. Don't overrate him.

What I've learned from this thread is that people don't watch SA.

LaMarcus Aldridge plays most of his minutes at C, and he has been a beast all season. There's a reason why smart analysts like Nate Duncan and Zach Lowe are talking about him being the All-NBA first team C.

I also got a chuckle from the suggestion that DJ is an elite C this year. That's almost as good as the OP's claim that Olynyk is a top 10 C. Thanks for the LOLs.

Yeah, because Nurkic has those kind of games almost every time . Half a season ago Blazers fans wanted him gone.

Uuuuh, no. No Blazer fans wanted him gone. As a Blazer fan, I can tell you that unequivocally. We were all trying to figure out what his next contract was going to be and why he was playing so poorly after a great post ASG run, but nobody wanted him gone.

I brought up the Miami game because you are a Heat fan. But if you want to talk about consistency? How many times has Olynyk averaged over 11 points and 8 rebounds in a season? The answer is never. Nurkic averaged 15/10 and 14/8 the past two seasons. Does Olynyk have a bigger offensive arsenal? maybe...but it's silly to say Nurkic "has no offense" when the player you are comparing him to hasn't been as successful in the NBA offensively.

I'll admit I haven't watched him much this year, but last year with the Celtics he was insanely overrated on this board. People acted like him going to Miami was this massive loss for Boston. It wasn't.

I rate Kelly Olynyk about at high as Mo Speights from a couple years ago. Can come in and get you a few buckets, but don't count on it every night.

If you have low expectations, you're likely to be pleasantly surprised. But if he's starting, your team is probably not very good.
Hear you tell it, man I'm fallin/Well somebody must have caught him/Cause every fourth quarter/I like to Mike Jordan 'em.

He has kinda unique (but not elite) skillset and can play both C and PF on offence, but can't play either on D and is below average on boards. So no way he is a top 10.

Heat fans tend to over rate certain players, and Kelly’s one of them. I love what he brings, but he gets killed because he cannot play a lick of defense. He is what he is, a role player. Please fellow heat fans, stop overrating him.

I'd take Sabonis over Olynk.

You and about 95% of RealGMers. Seriously, if you go by per36 numbers there is a better argument for Sabonis to be a top 10 center than Olynyk.

No, I'm not sure. I haven't looked at their numbers at the Center position that closely. But before you try and make a huge point by digging up stats, remember one number on which most of us here would take Sabonis over Olynyk. Age.

Olynyk in his 5th season-- 26
Sabonis in his 2nd season-- 21

But we're not talking about the future, we're talking about now. Also, per36 KO averages more points and assists than Sabonis.
