Not even close . He has 4th best defensive rating on a team behind Vuc, Isaac and Biyombo, by DBPM he is one of few Magic players that don't have negative index ( 0,0, same as Gordon ).
I'm not saying that he is great defender but days where he was worthless on that side of a ball are gone. And he has 3rd higest steals percentage on a team .

Funny the same people saying that vuc sucks at D (while ignoring stats) come here defending Mario s D using the same stats

MARIO has the tools to be a good defender but he is still far away from reaching his potential.

MARIO is young and not a finished product

But he won't be here by the time he reaches it

His bags r already packed

steals != great defense.

Dipo and Payton used to cheat all the time for steals and were constantly caught out of position

steals don't mean anything but real defensive box plus minus along with defensive win share is solid. Far from lockdown defender, but far from that rookie version of himself.

you touted his steals, was just pointing out the relevance of that stat.

if he scores 21ppg last 4 games he will have double ppg this year
and if he scores 8/10 3's in last 4 games he will have 40,4% for 3s :D
but he is so unselfish that...

Probably not the best tweet for the Magic to put out after declining him earlier in the season....

If you assume the Magic pick up his option, how much more opportunity would he have gotten this year? Any thoughts on how that would have affected his season?

We can only speculate though.

I personally think Mario will become a borderline All-Star or even an All-Star at some point of his career. In 3-4 years. I could be wrong, but he's got all the tools.

Once his 3PT shot becomes consistent, he will be able to take that step IMHO. And I don't think this cause he's a highlight machine.

I still think his game would still be the same. The only reason why Mario got the opportunity is because of injuries. That happened regardless whether we picked up his option or not.

I also think he would play the same, he has shown these flashes since his rookie year. A lot of people fail to remmeber that Mario was at least a decent rookie. And it was evident last year, you could see, he didnt have much lift or mobility. Glad that everything has been cleared up now that he has come out saying he was playing injured.

the best mario is the mario that gets consistent minutes. He is more relaxed and is not pushing the envelope to prove himself. Ideally if he returns... i want him to either be our Sixth man (getting 30 min a game) or our replacement of fournier if he is moved for other pieces. Starter mario with AG, JI and our pick will be an awesome way to reboot this team.

I highly doubt it would've changed anything. Vogel decided within the first few weeks of last season that Hezonja was outside of the rotation. That hadn't changed at the time his option was declined. Vogel was always more concerned with eradicating mental errors than he was with accentuating positive attributes and allowing players the freedom to learn through experimentation. This has created an atmosphere where our young players largely just take up space and watch the vets do their thing ad nauseam. It was a series of injuries that forced Vogel to put Hezonja on the floor. In the absence of those injuries and completely independent of his contract situation, Hezonja would have spent the remainder of the season rotting on our bench.

I see MArio as the most interesting free agent on the market for my Pacers. Like Oladipo a young player ready to take the next step.
For the record I sympathize with the Orlando fan. I remember being very frustrated with indiana when we had a similar outcome with Solomon Hill. Can’t imagine how I would have felt if we had declined the option of a lottery pick. I figure this is the place to come to get the most insightful answers to my questions.

How do you rate indiana as a destination for Mario?
Do you think he is better off going to a lesser team that can offer more money and a larger role?
If he were to go to the Pacers, what would you predict for him next year and longer?

for both Gordon and Mario Pacers are best place to go.
Pacers are in great spot to be. Turner , Oladipo,Sabonis all young and good, Collison and Bogdanovic on non guaranteed ,solid, short deals.

not sure how Solomon Hill compares. you dodged a bullet there. He took a huge payday and has sucked.
