Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
Here's a really good Twitter thread breaking down the good and bad from monk over the past 10 games. Pretty much spot-on from my observations and my thoughts on monk as well.

Not sure I completely agree with this thinking that monk should not be developed as a point guard but rather than a combo guard. It might be nice to try to develop as a point guard but maybe it's true that his real value lies as a combo guard. Although monk has a career combo-guard definitely limits his upside. That is unless he ever plays next to a full-time bigger point guard, which I obviously won't happen next to Kemba.

No doubt Monk needs to start getting to the line more often. Some of that will come with respect from the refs, but most of that has to do with Monk avoiding contact, taking bad shots rather than driving it all the way into defenders in the paint. I think I saw some stat yesterday that he had zero free throw attempts over the past handful of games. That's a bit concerning considering his 29% usage rate.

Monk at one point at Kentucky went a very, very long time without even attempting a FT at Kentucky. Just isnt his type of game I guess

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
should try to be a CJ McCollum type. Primarily a scoring SG that can be a good secondary ball handler/playmaker.
Probably our best chance to be good anytime soon is if Kemba/Monk can be the East version of Lillard/McCollum

I refuse to take anything that idiot Percy that fancies himself as some sort of Hornets' insider but lives in Virginia says seriously. Remember when his "source" said Frank was out for the season last year when he got hurt in Phoenix and Frank was back on the court in no time. He needs to keep his ass in Virginia and worry about UVA getting out of the first round of the NCAA Tournament against a 16 seed!

It was a mistake for Coach Clifford to force Monk to play point guard in his first season, the most difficult and time-consuming position to learn in the NBA. I like his court vision and ability to pass the ball, but as you point out, he could have employed those skills just as well at shooting guard.

Percy is right when he says Monk needs to get to the line. He didnt at Kentucky. Hasnt so far in the NBA. It can be a big difference maker in him being an average shot maker to a good player.

guards; Min > 700; free throw rate < 0.08
only 7 players, monk with lowest TS% of 7
gotta get to the line more next year, speaks to his bad shot selection

I expanded this to get 20 years worth of data. 39 guys on that list. Some interesting names too, including J.R. Smith (16-17), Dell Curry (late career Toronto year), and a young Kyle Kover. The general pattern seemed to be young guys without tons of PT and older guys for the most part.
I'm going to say that Monk's shot selection worries me. His FTR does not at this point. In any event both are "fixable" if he works at it.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
As the league become more and more position-less it’s probably best to develop him as a point guard to fine tune the skill sets that he’s weaker at like ballhandling, passing, and controlling pace. Those are the things that’ll take his game to the next level whether he’s a PG or a SG on the depth chart or not.

Monk has done more in the last 3 games or so than MCW all season.

Promising stuff, can't wait to see what he brings next year(if Cliff isn't here).
The Charlotte Hornets will win their first round series against the Boston Celtics in the 2021 Playoffs

Re: We Want the Monk: The Malik Monk Thread
It might (probably) be how bad we are at drafting, but Monks past 5 games have probably been the best 5 game stretch of a rookie we have had since MKG.
