This is pretty much it. The award is entirely beside the point and frankly, Mitchell had it right when he suggested he'd rather have a higher playoff seed than win RoY. It's better to get a superstar that just happens to not win RoY because there was another superstar competing with him for the award or because they started slow but came on stronger at a later point, than have a lesser player who wins the award because the competition sucked that year. Nobody cares that guys like Mike Miller and Michael Carter-Williams were RoYs and nobody cares that guys like Steph Curry and James Harden weren't RoY.

This is an opinion I'm fine with on one condition: when discussing the 2017/18 rookie of the year in the future, all parties must first admit that Ben Simmons was indeed better. If this condition is agreed upon, I'm fine with Mitchell receiving the award. Even though Mitchell had an additional year in college to develop over, say, Jayson Tatum. Actually, Jayson Tatum should win. Sophomores should be ineligible to win the award. That extra year in college is a huge advantage.

Congratulations, Jayson.

So glad this race will be over soon. This thread has become home to some of most stupid, toxic takes I have ever seen on the forum.

Simmons is a great player...but he's not very likable

http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/23089422/philadelphia-76ers-ben-simmons-says-100-percent-rookie-year

When the 6-foot-10 point guard was told the Rookie of the Year race appears to be a two-man show, he buried his head down and proceeded to chuckle. Asked what rookies have caught his attention this year, he didn't mince words.

"None," Simmons responded promptly. "I want to be where the greats are. So, for me, I watch the guys like [Kevin Durant], [LeBron James], [Stephen] Curry, Russell [Westbrook]. Guys like that. That's where I want to be. I think for me, that's what I love to watch."

Clearly this award means A LOT to him

"Coming off a broken foot is definitely not an edge, but people are always going to say what they want to say," Simmons said. "But at the end of the day, this is my first year in the league. If you're a guy coming from overseas, you're still a rookie and you can be 30 years old. So there's a rule in there."

He seems pretty insecure, not even able to give credit where it's due

Simmons is not insecure. He is speaking his truth - which is there is NO rookie who compares with him. I agree with him.

I actually like that fact that his focus isn't on Donovan Mitchell, but the elite players of the NBA. That is where his focus should be.

Simmons said these very same things before the season began.
He said his immediate goal was to be compared to the very best in the NBA.
So this is no disrespect to Mitchell, as Simmons was thinking this way before Mitchell was even a contender for ROY.

The comments above, along with "People that know the game know" and "he's just a scorer" are the real headlines. They're dismissive, idiotic, and REEK of insecurity. Maybe that's what I'll call Simmons from now on...Reek.

I honestly don't care if Mitchell wins the ROTY...in fact I think it might be better for him if he doesn't.

Mitchell is the type that is fueled by this stuff. Much like Michael (who is STILL holding onto things against his high school coach) and Kobe and other greats who take note of this stuff and use it as motivation.

The fact you can't even acknowledge the idiocy of him responding to "what rookies have caught your attention" with "none" is so very telling.

The question wasn't "what rookies compare to you, or, should someone else be considered for roty besides you (him responding with "none" would still be idiotic to that question by the way given the discussion that is being had outside of Simmons himself and his fanboys) no, that wasn't the question, it was "what rookies have caught your attention."

None? Really? One of the best rookie classes ever, along with a guy doing things that not many rookies ever have and "none" is his response. Like complimenting someone in the rookie class, takes away from what he's doing or would break his heart and potentially impact the voting and him getting the award. I think Reek is blatantly insecure.

Simmons is a player who was drafted in the class of 2016 who won ROTY in 2018. Is everyone satisfied with this statement?

I honestly think Philly fans are a large part of why people are seemingly anti-Simmons or discounting him. I see nothing not to like about the Aussie or his game. Same goes for why people hate Celtics players (and insert basically any team with a vocal fanbase: Raptors, Lakers etc).

Yeah. Ben Simmons is insecure. Right.

So...when the season started and his fellow rookies did not vote Simmons as a front-runner for ROY, do you think he cared...or do you think he used it for fuel - huh?

He doesn't give a f what you think or what I think or what Donovan Mitchell thinks or what any other rookie thinks. Period.

I remember an interview with Kobe Bryant on the eve of the 2001 Finals...they asked him about what it was like to come home (he starred at Lower Merion High School - where my kids will go to school) to play in the Finals. He could have said something nice about Philly...what it would be like to play in the Finals here...and instead, he said something to the effect of, yeah, I am coming home to "cut the hearts out" of Sixers fans. Fans in Philly got all bent about that, but that was the Black Mamba speaking.

No mercy.

Ben Simmons doesn't care what Donovan Mitchell or any other rookie thinks of him. Mitchell played like STRAIGHT TRASH in the two games they played against each other (guess who won), and if anything, I would expect in their next game for Ben to guard DM personally and show him what an All-Defensive-Team-level toolbox looks like up close and personal. I still think about Embiid smacking Mitchell's ish here in Philly and then talking smack to him while he was on the ground. One of the highlights of the year for me. I respect what Donovan Mitchell has done, but if you want to get your panties in a twist because Simmons wouldn't "play nice" with Mitchell in that interview, feel free. I know Ben isn't losing any sleep over it.

Good luck in the playoffs. Hopefully both teams will get to the Finals and it can be settled there.

Believe it fuels Simmons as well, however it seems he holds grudges, too. Didn’t get a single vote by the rookies to win ROY prior to the season and when asked if they just forgot about him he responded that ‘they’ll remember’. Mitchell ignored him again at the AS break when asked who should win ROY.

Also, he says the same things he did about looking towards the top and not around at other rookies.

Ben Simmons is the best FIRST YEAR NBA PLAYER in the 2017-18 season - therefore, he is the 2017-18 NBA Rookie of the Year.

I like that statement. Both factual (IMO) and consistent with the rules for the award.

Why do people take ROTY and MVP that seriously? If they were serious about the awards, they would combine regular season and playoff results of the players.
