Ideally everything clicks with Brogdon back and we can make a deep run. But purposely forfeiting a 1st round draft pick just to secure a more favorable round one playoff opponent doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me.

That's not at all why people are saying they want to give up the pick.

I see that now. But most of the explanations I'm reading have to do with fearing for a future Giannis injury. I mean.. c'mon we can't live like that.

This is what keeps sticking out in my head. And on top of that, we may have been trading up to get him. If that is the case, give it up this year and let the next GM have it.

It's beneficial for us to give up this pick this year. The 17th pick in this draft doesn't look great -- and we've botched drafting the last 3 years. I'd rather convey it this year and be free to include a 1st rounder in a potential trade this offseason for Kawhi or Kemba (not saying either are probable but would rather have the assets to use).

Also, like others have mentioned -- we are likely a Giannis injury away from being a lotto team. I'd rather give up #16 this year than a possible top 10 or top 5 pick down the road.

We need this pick now and we need it to hit.

We're giving up a first round pick regardless. Why not give it up this year when we *know* it's going to be the bottom half of the draft? Things can change quickly in the NBA with injury or player movement. Who knows where we'll be next year when we only have top 4 protection, or especially in 2021 when it's completely unprotected.

I don't really think we need the pick now. Yes, we need to make some roster changes and fill in the couple of massive gaps we have, but Giannis is under contract for three more seasons after this. To me what matters more is where we're at going into that offseason far more than where we'll be next year.

I get all the actuarial stuff, but that doesn't negate the fact that we need to add players around Giannis. Not even out of fear of him leaving, but just so that we can actually have a good and logical team around him.

I hear the argument that a future pick is worth more in trade and it sounds ahistorical to me. Draft picks peak in value on draft day. Nobody's out here buying future 2nd rounders.

Generally agree. And I know I did bring it up in my post though. I wouldn't say I'm planning on it but was just using it as an example of the most obvious way that our pick down the line could be much higher than 16. Other things could happen too, say we keep it next year too then MId/Bled are gone and you're in rebuild mode. Who knows what could happen so I think it's logical to just give it when you 'know' it's this low vs the unknown risk of the future (with a Giannis injury being the greatest risk).

A future unprotected first round pick is a more valuable trade asset than whoever we pick with #17 this year. If we don't convey the pick this year, we have only have a weirdly protected 1st round pick to offer since we can't have two outgoing picks in future consecutive years.

Give up #16 this year and be done with it.

Future picks, even lotto protected ones generally have more "value" whether actual or psychological than the 17th pick (what we'd be able to deal if we keep the pick) in a given draft.

Example: MJ and the Charlotte crew need to sell their fanbase on trading Kemba for Middleton and a pick. Middleton and a future first from a team like the Bucks (who could arguably be worse in the future) sounds more appealing than getting the 17th pick in this draft outright.

TL:DR-The Bucks are a weak sister team subject to being back in the lotto in the years ahead.

Yes, to keeping the pick.

The morning after the Bucks last game of the season; Horst, Prunty, and the residue should be thanked for their service and fired.

I know it's too much to expect, but a clean break with the treadmill past. Hire a forward thinking GM or POBO and LED then restrain themselves and let that new guy pilot the ship. The middle and end of the roster is mostly deadwood; so more talent is needed. With the Bucks wifty cap situation, there should be a number of roster moves.

Can't believe this is even a question when you look at our team and it's cap situation. Resounding YES!

Lose the Pick or forever remain (the .500 team) (Destined 8th Seed) (Cap Hell) (Mediocre Team) (Giannis May Leave)

For the good of the team, lose the PICK!!!!

You're probably right about an unprotected pick. I thought that's what the lose the pick crowd was trying to avoid, but certainly fair to include the flexibility to do that on the pluses side of losing this pick.

I'll laugh when we get swept by Boston, have no cap space or draft picks, and let Jabari walk. This place will go nuclear

I don't agree that lotto protected future 1sts have more value than draft day mid 1sts. The 17th pick would be a player who they could sell immediately. Nobody wants to print up promotional materials with question-mark face in a jersey.

This is difficult as I've seen anecdotes from draft experts that the quality of the 2018 draft is pretty strong compared to 2019 (but haven't seen a real detailed analysis and who knows what 2019 holds). So that is a pro to keeping the pick. The negatives is the Bucks FO making the correct choice in 2018 and the risk of giving up the pick if the team is worse in 2019/future years.

While this team has not inspired confidence, I have to go with optimism and hope that they will make a good choice as the team really could use a 1st rounder who can contribute. Though I realize this is quite risky and if we had a better FO, I'd feel much more comfortable

There are legitimate pro's and con's to both sides so this is a real toss-up.

I hope at that point they've sold off everyone not named Giannis.
