Bookmarking this quote for future "value of mid 1st rounder" debates. I swear...

Take the whole quote in context. The 16th pick doesn't have that much value compared to a much higher one we could cough up down the road.

I know this is the pessimistic, defeatist attitude that the Bucks have forced upon fans, but I choose to remain optimistic. I'm cautiously optimistic that this season is the worst the Bucks will be until the pick absolutely has to convey, eventually leading to the Suns receiving a pick in the 24-30 range years from now.

So, keep the pick this year ... and don't let Horst anywhere near the draft room ... or anyone else currently in the front office ... and definitely not any spawns of this ownership group.

What pick do you think an unprotected 2019 Bucks pick gets us in this draft?

Absolutely do not want the pick this year. Get it over with. It could be a much better pick we're giving up next year (and a worse situation for us, as a result).

Keep the pick if you can. You always want a crack at it and you never bank on worst case scenarios. Adding a cheap potential rotation player is crucial for us and he could end up being more than that.

I say let the pick go now, because once Lasry takes over governorship, he will fire Horst and I'd rather have someone who knows what they are doing having the pick.

The Bucks NEED to get a center if they're going to compete for a conference championship. How are they going to go about trying to get one without having their 1st round pick?

I hear the argument that a future pick is worth more in trade and it sounds ahistorical to me. Draft picks peak in value on draft day. Nobody's out here buying future 2nd rounders.

Future picks, even lotto protected ones generally have more "value" whether actual or psychological than the 17th pick (what we'd be able to deal if we keep the pick) in a given draft.

Example: MJ and the Charlotte crew need to sell their fanbase on trading Kemba for Middleton and a pick. Middleton and a future first from a team like the Bucks (who could arguably be worse in the future) sounds more appealing than getting the 17th pick in this draft outright.

TL:DR-The Bucks are a weak sister team subject to being back in the lotto in the years ahead.

This makes no sense at all. A lotto protected pick means you're going to get a pick between 15 and 30 down the road. And only that if it conveys. You could also get 2 seconds. I'd much rather get the 17th pick now than a future lotto protected first from any team you choose.

Also having a pick sooner rather than later is generally prefered.

You take the pick NOW, Giannis was #15 in the draft so don't act like there isn't value their plus we can move the pick on draft day I think as part of a bigger deal. We need to make this run NOW and not worry about 'insurance' just in case all your worst nightmares come true.

I've spent too much time thinking about this. I honestly believe I will be rooting for the Celtics for the first time EVER tonight.

Here is why:
With a Bos win over Wash (losers of 5 of their last 6 including Chi/Atl/Det) Washington would have two more losses than us and we would be locked into the 6/7. With that knowledge, I think we rest Giannis for the last game in hopes of getting Boston. Here is the thing, I think Miami wants Boston too and they could (if Bos beats Wash tonight) find a way to lose to Toronto to make that happen as they have the tie-breaker with Wash. Which means we end up with the 6 seed and Philly, which is already a fun rivalry.

We keep our pick and get Philly. And if we somehow manage to win that we get Mia/Bos in R2 which is pretty much ideal. Voila.

On one hand I want to get the pick out of the way, on the other we could desperately use a cheap bench option. The hard part is since Jabari we don't have any 1st rounders who can actually ball

Usually the lotto protection on those deals wears down over the years to the point where it drops to only top 3 or top 1 protection. Granted the lotto protection could stay on forever and convert to two second rounders.

The point being you have a lot of flexibility as the team giving up the pick to increase or decrease the value of it. If I'm dealing pick #17, I could make the future pick more or less attractive than that depending on the restrictions.

This also ties into Emunney's question above as to how much value would the Bucks unprotected 2019 pick have? A lot depends on which team is dealing for it. Some teams value immediate help and some have the luxury or plan (Hinkie) of stockpiling things.

Pretty sure we can't trade the pick since there would be a chance we would be trading a 1st 2 years in a row

Why can't we package the pick on draft day? That's already after the pick is made and isn't complete until new NBA year starts in July I think.

I want to win, worrying about Giannis slipping on some ice or whatever and being out the season thus giving a high pick away I don't think is a rational fear. Way way to cautious, we need to put a team around Giannis now and 100% we can get a contributor at that pick especially considering we do pretty well in the 2nd round. A big man or 3 pt specialist? Are there any in the whole draft?

I would like to see a couple of our "talented" players dealt in the offseason. I assume having a pick to package will help make those moves. So, put me in the get the pick out of the way camp.

Lose the pick, trade Middleton for upside pieces.

I vote no.

Easier to trade future firsts if we want to make another win now move. Plus we are the Bucks - when was the last time we drafted someone in the 20's? I honestly don't know the answer to that.

1992 Lee Mayberry was the last time the Bucks took someone in the 20's. Amazing.

Keep the pick and get an actual front office that can take this talent to 50 wins next year. Also I think we really need to hit on this pick and would rather have an extra year with Giannis.
