OT - Former Pacers HC Frank Vogel fired by the Orlando Magic

I have been keeping an eye on what Frank has been up to. Him taking over the team is what got me interested in them again after a number of years not paying much attention at all. You think he gets another opportunity somewhere in the league? Does he end up as an assistant somewhere? Could you see a return here as an assistant? Supposedly, they never sold their home here.

Orlando's front office of president Jeff Weltman and general manager John Hammond, who were hired in May 2017, will begin a search immediately for a new head coach.

"We would like to thank Frank for his contributions to the Orlando Magic," Weltman said in a statement. "We appreciate the sacrifices he made as head coach and certainly wish him and his family well going forward."

Orlando will move on to its fifth coach since firing Stan Van Gundy after the 2011-12 season. A six-season playoff streak ended after Van Gundy's departure that season, and the Magic haven't made the postseason since -- the longest drought in franchise history.

Maybe. I can see that happening if Vogel doesn't get a HC job somewhere.

But I suspect he'll just take it easy for a while. He still has 2 years of guaranteed money from his Orlando contract, I believe.

Well of course. McMillan is a top 3 COY candidate. No matter how I feel about his timeout-calling (or lack thereof, lol) he has absolutely earned his position for next year, and has earned all the respect in the world from this locker room.

Vogel would be a great assistant here though. Would love to have him back.

Some times getting fired can be the best thing that ever happened to you. If you have never been fired it means you're not trying to distinguish yourself. Frank did a good job here, he shouldn't have been let go. The Orlando job didn't work out. I expect Frank to land on his feet and hit the ground running.

Some Magic fan said he thought Frank looked like a POW at times. Let's hope his next job is better.

I bet he gets the Knicks job. But as an Asst in San Antonio could lead to a HC job soon, considering Popi's age.

For the life of me I can't quite firgure out why Vogel is so popular on this board, because he never evolved or made the necessary adjustments to get us to the next level. We had HCA against Miami that one year and we simply beat ourselves. Our offense ranked in the bottom third on the NBA in five of his six seasons here. Really he should have been let go in 2014 instead of 2016, but of course he was given the 'ole "we went up against LeBron" excuse.

It's actually a very good excuse. If the Pacers fall again to the Cavs again this year, wouldn't you expect it was because of LeBron?

Frank is a good coach. But to qualify that, there are like 3-4 really elite coaches (I guess Pop, Stevens, Kerr, Carlisle in some order would be my list) and then maybe 15-20 coaches who I would call "good". Frank is in that middle zone (and I suspect Nate is too, but no one wants to hear that right now.)

Vogel's teams weren't good on offense, but he had a couple which were historically good on defense. So you know, he's not all bad.

FWIW I think Vogel is at that level of coaching where the players matter a great deal more than the coach. So yes he's replaceable (as Nate has shown this season), but you could also do a whole lot worse.

As to why anyone would want him back, as long as he isn't replacing Nate then I don't see why it would matter. He's well-liked, he relates well to the players, he has a good basketball mind, and he's previously worked well with Nate. He'd be an asset to the coaching staff.

For me it's mostly because of the turnaround he lead this team on when he became coach. I don't think Jim O'Brien would've gotten us anywhere near home court advantage in the ECF. He lead a pretty massive culture and image change that I think the Pacers desperately needed at the time.

I wouldn't fire Nate for him now, but I do think he undoubtedly left a lasting mark on this franchise.
