Re: Non-threadworthy UFC Events Thread
Btw who was it who called me a liar a month or two back when I said I won a bet on an MMA fight? I almost always post my bets beforehand, and it hasn't been pretty lately lol.

Re: Non-threadworthy UFC Events Thread
Gaethje is such a throw back fighter. Kind of like a Chris Leben of just willing to take a ton of damage with the hope of letting the other guy tire themselves out with the hope of catching them in a brawl. Not the smartest fighting style but damn he always is in entertaining fights.

I thought Karate Hottie lost btw. She got overhyped due to beating PVZ.

Yeah that other fighter got no credit for controlling most of the ground action with sub attempts.

Wow, media scores 16-1 in favor of Casey.

I didn't watch but from the sound of it I don't think it sounds like that necessarily needs credit, like with "octagon control", if no damage was done I don't get why it needs points.

Well first of all if you spend an entire round in deep armbars then you certainly aren't mounting any type of offense or scoring yourself, right?
Damage isn't a criterion btw.

Grappling is a major criteria and Watterson lost that even if she was on top most of the time. There's no points for defending from submissions, and submission attempts not only count for controlling the grappling they can be considered aggression, which is tiebreaker that is considered before octagon control.

The man has twenty six fights in the UFC.
Lobov has six, Lobov was in something called Absolute Fighting in 2015.
Definitely apt comparison. They're shadows of one another.

Wow. Poirier with a crazy gut check. I thought he wanted out: Kept looking at his corner, deep breaths, etc.
Amazing.

Win percentage exists outside of Artem Lobov and/or any consideration of level of competition.

So...it doesn't mean anything?
Someone wins their UFC debut, is 1.000. Mighty Mouse is .920. No one would cite the win percentage without reference to who these fighters are and their level of competition.
Like no one would compare Tim Boetsch to Artem Lobov. Cos it's meaningless without context of career.

Maybe I'm turning into a wimp, but watching Gaethje is becoming more and more uncomfortable. He just doesn't stop getting punched.

I should have added in split decisions that shouldn't have gone his way. MMA media unanimously scored both Lombard and Dolloway fights against him. Add that to the mix and he may be envious of Artem's win percentage at this point.

I love the heart on that guy but his fighting style just isn't good for him in the long run, its very entertaining though. Its crazy that he doesn't use his wrestling at all. Unless he changes his style he'll never beat the elite fighters

He has stated multiple times that he is only going to fight a certain amount of times. After the last fight he said he only has 5 more fights left.

Ya, he's said he doesn't care about wins and losses, he wants to have the most entertaining fights possible...
He's got 5 fights left, then he wants to use that money to buy some places to rent, work as a social worker and live his life.

Re: Non-threadworthy UFC Events Thread
Everyone is talking about Gaethje but to me one of the most interesting aspects of that card on Saturday is Poirier. This is a guy who looks like he has finally gotten over the hump mentally. He was a super hyped prospect coming up through the ranks in WEC back in the day. Then he gets to the UFC and has his first main event slot against Korean Zombie and gets finished. I can still recall him crying on TV afterwards saying "this was supposed to be me". Then he beats middling fighters until he gets a much anticipated shot against Conor McGregor and gets KOed relatively easily. Picks up some more wins and in his second main event slot gets KOed by Michael Johnson. I'm not sure what to make of the EA fight, its a little murky in my head but one way or another he didn't get it done despite looking like he had the upper hand.
Fast forward to the Pettis fight. Despite the TKO-Injury, that fight was obviously trending well for Dustin as he was taking top mount at the time that the injury happened. Probably the biggest win in his career in a headliner. Next up, the Gaethje fight where he threw the kitchen sink at Gaethje and ended up getting the finish. Now I WILL say this, I thought there was a second that Poirier wanted out of that fight. I was watching with a buddy and rooting for Gaethje and I can recall at one point after eating some shots Poirier took a long look at the clock and at his corner and I said "he wants out, this dude wants out", but he weathered the storm and ended up getting the finish.
He called out Khabib afterward and everyone was LOLZING about that saying he would get taken down easy. I say what are you guys talking about? Have we ever in his long career seen Poirier taken down with ease? I don't think he fought Mendes, at least that I can remember. I do see that he lost to Castillo forever ago, was that a fight mostly contested on the ground? I'm not really sure what I'm missing here.
I almost think it makes sense to run that Poirier/Alvarez fight back (although Eddie has made it clear he wants no part of that) and let the winner fight whichever of the three champions they are parading around as the official champion that week.

Re: Non-threadworthy UFC Events Thread
I know you guys anxiously await my betting advice on the weekly, so for this week, I'm eyeing up Barboza at plus money. I'm still not 100% sold on Lee. It does make me a little nervous with the wrestling but still going with Edson.
