Re: 2018 - Official Free Agency
I will also add, however, that it'll be interesting to see what his next contract comes in at. Can he get 9, maybe 10 million per year from somebody? I'd probably put that at his range. Maybe 8.5 on the low end.
There would've been a time not TOO long ago that that would've been SO tempting but like I've been saying the cliff is going to be an ugly looking one for him IMO.

Had reportedly tried to trade him. Dolphins backed out of a trade for him at the last minute, according to another report.

Re: 2018 - Official Free Agency
As stated previously, would've been happy with him as a depth, flier signing. Wouldn't have made me steer clear from any of my favorites in the draft but I was rooting for that one to happen (no 49ers rumors/links that it was possible). Bummed to see him within the division.

Re: 2018 - Official Free Agency
One of my prouder draft calls. I was pretty darn sure on him. Literally screaming all alone at the TV for them to draft him that year. I might have even tossed a soft object at the floor when he was drafted, too.

In a way it's strange to think he's already 34 years old. I probably should be completely out on wanting to see them go after him but like Dez, who also was another all-timer to me, though one that scared the pants off me for the obvious reasons, a small part of me would still like to see it happen even though it doesn't make a ton of sense. In the end I'd probably pass if asked to think rationally but a small piece would like it.
Yes, I'm aware of all the health things that come from him. Yes, I've seen the physical decline. Yes, I'm aware of the types of struggles he had with NYG. Yes, I'm aware of the lack of chemistry he showed with Manning. Anything else? I'm probably aware of all that, too. I Again, I would probably pass but there's that small piece of me yet.
Fun facts
Marshall taken in the same round as Owen Daniels, Michael Robinson (49er), Darnell Bing (remember that name?), Brad Smith (eventual WR), Gabe Watson, Jahri Evans, Jason Avant, Demetrius Williams, Will Blackmon, Stephen Tulloch, Leon Washington, Stephen Gostkowski, Domata Peko, Barry Cofield, Elvis Dumervil, Ray Edwards, and Guy Whimper (one of the worst/best football names ever). What a memorable round!
TWELVE wide receivers went ahead of him that year. (49ers Brandon Williams was one of them).

This is good to hear.

I 'member that. Great call.
Hoping more cuts are to come. Maybe a DE or another WR...

Re: 2018 - Official Free Agency
I'd be closer to a Dez advocate again if I could do a reasonable 1-year deal with the option to negotiate again in the future. I did not give it a lot of thought when he was released because I would have expected he'd get a 2-3 year deal from someone but the 1 year thing lessens some of the concern I'd have with him. I still think he's going to fall off the cliff a heck of a lot harder than most guys so I'd have zero interest in getting caught in a team friendly money deal but one that's kind to him over a long period of time. I'd rather pay a bit more now in exchange for not being tied to something yucky beyond a year or two.
Just to give this some detail. How high would I go for a year? I'd start with $8M and see what they'd say. I'd probably go as high as $9-$10M for the year if that's what it took. But that would still come with a bunch of trepidation and nervous feelings that it might not look pretty and I might not get a great return on that investment and I'd have to cut bait at some point.
If I have to live in the Kyle Shanahan-John Lynch world then this doesn't happen. I don't see Dez as a great fit for a Kyle Shanahan offense at $10+M per. He's never been the route technician with his routes that he'd need to be if history is any indication. He also hasn't shown the most enthusiastic desire into working on that part of his game if a coaching staff like them felt that there were other things that were a match for them either. I don't know how that'd start now in year 9.

for a 1 yr rental? especially with the cap space... i would entertain it at least...
But I think Shanny/Lynch are believers of the current WR group.
