Re: what position do we need most?
All.
I think most prominently, we need a go to scorer. A player we can toss the ball to who can create a shot for himself.
Ayton, Porter, Bagley most fit that need.
Second to that, we need a guy consistently able to create easy buckets for other players.
NOTE: I do think wing players are becoming more prominent of late and easier to find a competent one. So I'd place priority on C, PF, PG.
Not in that order.

Re: what position do we need most?
I don't look at it as what "position" we need, it's more like what "role" we need.
We just need an offensive alpha. "Position" doesn't matter.
Gun to my head though, I'd say 2G but that's only because of the state of the game which overly rewards ballhandlers that can shoot the 3.
Semi-related, keep an eye on Chuk McCollum .....

Re: what position do we need most?
It's still a perimeter oriented league. The teams that make a jump do so because they have Simmons, Mitchell, Butler, Giannis, Oladipo, Kyrie. Not because they have KAT, AD, Gobert, Sap. Don't get me wrong having those talented bigs is a great thing but at some point you have to have a star wing. A real star for a championship. Not that I mind drafting Ayton but we can't ignore that we'd still need an elite scoring wing.

The reverse could be said as well.
I mean NOP aren't winning because of a star wing. It's mostly because of AD.
Ninny held its own without Jimmy for a while.
Meanwhile Devin Booker is struggling with the worst team in the league.
In the end, yes having a talent wing can lead to big things, but bigs matter too.
If we're really diving into team building, you probably can't have one without the other more than likely unless you have a superstar at either spot.

This is the part that hasn't been true lately. Houston, GS, Cavs are all winning championships with just serviceable bigs. KAT couldn't sniff the playoffs without Butler.

Houston hasn't won yet, but for the Sake of the argument, Capela is a very important part of their success as well. He's developed into more than a serviceable big.
GS is just a different beast, while Cleveland has the "best" player in the league(mind you it took a series of unfortunate events).
Can you really blame Kat when he has only been in the league for a few years with a very young roster? Looks a lot like the Lakers who were flooded with wings at one point.

Re: what position do we need most?
To answe the original question I’d say BPA...however I’d say that with a caveat on this draft and trying to find a quality 4/5 if he fell
Into our lap this year (big man heavy draft) compared to next with way less talented bigs except for my main man Bol Bol.
So if a talented big like an Ayton, Bagley or Bamba fell into our laps it would be great to pair them with John Collins and not worry about the 4/5 for 10 years.
Then again if a talented wing like Mikal Pippen or Michael Porter jr fell into our laps we would be lucky to get them and keep up with the WANG (that’s for you kg) direction of the league.
And last but not least the kid, MacD’s stepchild from Normandy, baby Trae, we draft him and we get our floor leader, our QB for a decade.
We are in a good spot to land a great player but like I always say..BPA for me.

I still don't like him as a player. But I have to acknowledge he's one of a few potential star guys who are likely to shake loose. Him, Beal/Wall, Kawhi, Wiggins ... that's all I can think off the top of my head, are all guys I could see being moved which could be installed as a team's centerpiece (for better or worse).

Re: what position do we need most?
I mentioned in another thread the possibility of trading our 2019 first for a pick in this draft. Would have to be top 10 or maybe even top 8 at the least. Bagley or Ayton plus Mikal Bridges would be a steal, or MPJ & Carter. Whatever scenario you want simply sounds better than being in the middle of next year's lottery. So for me BPA IS the need for us
2 guard is probably the actual need though.

I'd do that if our coaching situation wasn't in flux. If we get a new coach, that '19 pick will likely be a top 2 pick and our '20 and '21 picks will be almost as bad (i.e. valuable).
I'd be perfectly fine with Budz, our pick this year and a late-lotto/near playoff miss pick next season. I was always expecting to truly compete in '20-21 anyways.

I agree for this draft BPA. Schlenk already acknowledged thats the route he is going. I am just glad that he is at the helm. The last 2 out of 3 lottery picks we had we also went BPA and got Marvin Williams over a needed pg, and Sheldon Willams over a needed pg...im glad we are not under BK now though...those were rough days...not all his fault but still rough days...I trust Schlenk to draft better BPAs.

I really would like to see what the plan is behind your idea that we would be near the playoffs next year with practically the same roster (ala a not very good one) plus a rookie.

I don't think we would've been that far off from making the playoffs this year if we'd tried, honestly, but that has more to do with how little I think of the other teams in the East than any "plan" on our part.

Re: what position do we need most?
It would have taken MUCh better FAs for the Hawks to even sniff to playoffs this year. Also would have eliminated a top 6 pick and put us on a fringe play off tread-mill.
I think that we're not drafting position. If the BPA is PG, then I think TS takes PG. What I think will happen is that we take Doncic or one of the bigs; Ayton, Bags, JJJ, Bamba and look at one of the nice long PGs available toward the end of the first round.
Center seems to be our biggest position need, but Doncic would fit in real nice between Schro (or replacement) and Prince with a Center picked at 19 or 30
