20 years ago today: Jeff Van Gundy grabs Mourning

Post#1 » by Scuall » Mon Apr 30, 2018 3:27 pm

I remember watching this basketball game/wrestling match live. Great heated game, topped off with one of the most hilarious moments ever, Jeff Van Gundy grabbing Mourning's leg. I can't but help thinking about this whenever he's calling a game.

Truly one of the greatest moments in NBA history.

What other coach besides JVG will do that?

20 years later, it's Oakley being grabbed in the stands.

Lol, whenever I hear him I think about this and also when Marcus Camby tried some Gomu Gomu No Punch on Danny Ferry, only to headbutt our main man JVG

I remember that on TV. That always left a lingering impression of Van Gundy for me so I always liked him. Not sure how that got forgotten by most but Im glad someone remembered.

Omg, feels like yesterday but in reality we've been so bad for so long. Those were fat times.

No wonder Mark Jackson always says "as my partner always said, hand down, man down", it is actually what JVG set out to do to Mourning.

oh and let's not forget that complicated Johnson-Mourning relationship which led to that fight.

That was one of my all-time favourite playoff series. I remember PJ Brown doing a WWE body slam on John Starks or Chris Childs as well.

That was the year before, and it was the 96-97 East semi finals series. It got Houston, Starks, LJ, Charlie Ward (not Childs) all suspended. Hilarious that Ewing also got one game suspension for taking a casual stroll out of the bench

That was a pretty colourful era in the NBA... but painfully slow and low-scoring, with defenses allowed to grab, hold and punch at will. 88-83 with 50 seconds in the 4th quarter: that's about average for that era.

Check that: 97-98 the average PPG was 91.6.

It wasn't just a slam, PJ Brown completely flipped him. It was amazing how easily he picked up a 180+ pound man and tossed him aside like a pile of laundry.

Lmao every team needs a coach that would jump the leg of an opponent like a poodle in heat. That's dedication to your players man.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. I loved PJ Brown and his type of play. That particular incident didn't define him. He wash't a dirty player but was a straight forward hard nosed team first player. I'm hoping that the Blazers Zach Collins models his game in a somewhat similar fashion. He needs to put on some muscle no doubt but he has the same physical edge to his game.
