Trading for Melo
Wizards receive: Carmelo Anthony
OKC receives: Ian Mahinmi, Marcin Gortat, 2019 2nd rd pick
OKC has the desire to pay Melo 28M just as much as Melo has the desire to come off the bench for the Thunder in 2018. Combine that with Melo coming off his worst year, his trade value is at an all time low. With that said, there’s also a long list of players whose play has clearly improved once they leave OKC. I’m not a fan of the price tag, but it’d essentially be a one year trial run. He’s most productive on the block, but he doesn’t need to live there, opening up lanes for Wall that aren’t normally there with Gortat clogging the lane. Wall can elevate anyone’s game, and a Wall/Melo P&R could potentially be deadly. He’d add an offensive punch the Wiz sorely need, and if three months into the year it’s obvious things aren’t working, the Wiz have a 28M expiring to use as a trade chip. A lineup of Wall, Beal, Otto, Kief & Melo would put up buckets. The team needs a shakeup, and this would do that without sacrificing any of the team’s core pieces.
For OKC, they avoid the future headache that’s undoubtedly Carmelo Anthony in 2018. Gortat would be in his last year, so they can keep him, waive him, or keep him as trade chip. Mahinmi adds a rim protecting backup center the Thunder don’t have (Dakari Johnson is the only other C they currently have on the roster). The only other bigs they have are Jerami Grant, Josh Huestis, Patrick Patterson & Nick Collison. Basically damn near nothing. It’d be an extra year of salary they’d have to pay, but imo the Melo situation will only get worse. They could save around 12M by waiving Gortat, as the owner isn’t a fan of paying the luxury tax. Presti always seems to be able to work some magic.
Anyway, thoughts?

Re: Trading for Melo
I'd do that deal if we were buying Melo out immediately. Paying a 2nd to get out of Mahinmi's last year is a bargain. I have no interest in watching Melo jab step and brick jumpers for a season.

+1.
Always remember, my friend: the world will change again. And you may have to come back through everywhere you've been.

Yeah they get 2 more guys to play behind Adams...unless they just want to get Melo off the books...the wiz would have 4 damn near max players...and NO center

I am not saying I wouldn’t take Melo as our new Power Forward.
Starting - Wall, Beal, Otto, Melo and Mahimi...bench...Sato, KO, Morris, Mike Scott and Gortat....ok we would still be a 8 seed and lose to Boston next year in the first round...but we could dog Melo and Wall all year!

1. Steven Adams
2. Dakari Johnson
That was the Thunder depth chart at the C position. No NBA team should be relying on Dakari Johnson.

I would do the deal and try to find a 3rd team and 4th team to facilitate. Moving both Mahimni and Gortat - priceless.

Re: Trading for Melo
I can't stand Melo's game right now save for one thing that we can use: he can score late in games. I wouldn't mind having a player that can legit score in an iso situation in the last five minutes that would take pressure off the other guys. That's not worth $28M for one year and he's not a great leader, defender, passer, team player, etc.

Gotta admit to feeling the same way. We're not giving up anything substantial and we get out of the last year of Mahinmi's deal. (Of course, that's the same last year that will be a sticking point in the other direction.

How many times we gotta do a bad deal to get out of a worse deal? I guess I'd do it and throw in a 1st if EG is part of the trade.

Re: Trading for Melo
Melo's only value is that of an expiring contract. If acquiring him allows us to dump Mahinmi, I'm all for it. But as far as on-the-court ability, I wouldn't even want to see him on the floor, except maybe as a bailout option for the second unit. At this point, he's a poor-man's Mike Scott. That's not a typo. Mike Scott is a better player than Melo.

Agreed, I could be talked into Mahinmi, Morris, and either Smith or Meeks for Melo... but that about it

If it's out of Gortat and Ian contracts, I'm all for it. But yea, wouldn't want to see him on the court except in break glass in case of emergency situations. Also, not with Brooks as coach. Melo is Brooks wet dream. iso iso iso all day.

Re: Trading for Melo
OKC doesn't touch this. No reason to take on 2 Cs and Mahinm's extra year.
