Washington Wizards President Ernie Grunfeld received a contract extension months before the team concluded its inconsistent 2017-18 season and bowed out in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs as the eighth seed.

When reached for comment, a spokesman for majority owner Ted Leonsis and his company Monumental Sports & Entertainment, which runs the Wizards, declined to address the terms of the deal. According to a person close to the situation, however, the Wizards offered the extension in the fall.

I think this was discussed in the fall but the terms were never disclosed, i bet it’s a lifetime deal.

At least the Post, for a change, wrote an actual story on this and made Ernie and a "spokesman" for Ted go on the record with "no comment."

"Be transparent" was point 2 of Ted's 10-point plan, but that was in the context of rebuilding. I guess since they are not transparent they are not rebuilding.

I just don't understand it. Why in the world would Ted give Grunfeld so much money when all Grunfeld has done was win less than 50 games in 15 seasons in a row, while wasting Ted's money on lousy free agents?

The Summer of 2016 should have been the last straw. He spent $90M on players no better than vet-minimum walk-ons, while costing the team a 1st round pick to dump Nicholson, and it will cost an additional $15-30M in upcoming luxtax fees (or more squandered 1st round picks to dump salary).

Somehow, that paved the way for another extension.

I can even understand that ownership was more focused on making money rather than winning. Business is business. I get it. But if your goal is solely to make money, EG is still a disaster. At least teams like Utah and Indiana manage to field reasonably competent teams without the luxtax problems.

WASHINGTON -- The question put to Washington Wizardspresident Ernie Grunfeld was simple and to the point: Does he feel he deserved a new contract? The Wizards, after all, are wrapping up a fourth consecutive season of far more losses than wins.

Grunfeld's response Tuesday was direct, too.

"The important thing," he said, "is Ted felt that."

That was a reference, of course, to Wizards owner Ted Leonsis, whose decision it was to keep Grunfeld in place. Leonsis did not attend Tuesday's news conference announcing the move.

If EG got extended in secret, maybe he will get fired in secret too. Just imagine, next year we will all be singing EG's praise, marveling at what a wonderful job he did to make amends for his past mistakes, only to learn he got fired a season ago.
