COURT TO COMMUNITY: SPURS GIVE & SPURS OUTREACH INITIATIVES

Post#1 » by G R E Y » Fri May 4, 2018 4:53 pm

From court to community chronicles Silver & Black Give Back initiatives and Spurs' support for the charities they give time and attention to. You never know how something will resonate and who will benefit by spreading the word.

First, some info about Silver & Black Give Back:

Silver & Black Give Back is the nonprofit partner of the Spurs Sports & Entertainment family of teams; the San Antonio Spurs (NBA), Rampage (AHL), San Antonio FC (USL) and Austin Spurs (NBA Developmental League).

For over 25 years, our players, coaches and staff have been focused on fostering young talent and enriching the community by encouraging local youth to become responsible adults and give back. By offering youth sports programs, such as the Spurs Youth Basketball League, and youth-led service programs like the Team Up Challenge, we’ve invested in and empowered hundreds of thousands of young people. Together we have the power to empower!

Pau has several initiatives on the go, including

The Pau Gasol Academy https://twitter.com/hashtag/PauGasolAcademy?src=hash

as well as the Gasol Foundation https://twitter.com/GasolFoundation

Childhood Obesity is one of the most serious public health challenges of the 21st century and affects 42 million children worldwide. According to WHO (World Health Organization), 70 million young children will be overweight or obese by 2025. If this trend continues, we are facing the first generation that could live less than their parents. Gasol Foundation has been working since 2013 to reverse this trend, reduce Childhood Obesity rates and improve the quality of life for children and their families.

Gasol Foundation launches one scholarship to boys and girls under age who wish to participate in the Pau Gasol Academy 2018 (Barcelona, Spain). The Foundation aims to provide an opportunity for the most disadvantaged families who, with this initiative, can participate in this recreational sport activity led by the older Gasol brother.

To access to the scholarship, applicants must demonstrate family economic conditions, parental employment status, number of children at home and academic performance of the applicant, among others.

All applicants must complete the required information and send a video explaining the reasons why they want to participate in the Pau Gasol Academy. Once all the applications that meet those requirements are reviewed, the scholarship will cover the 100% of the total cost of the activity.

Pau also supports TESS Research Foundation:
TESS Research Foundation is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt public charity established to fund research in search of a treatment or cure of Citrate Transporter Disorder, a genetic neurological disorder associated with the gene SLC13A5. We are also here to provide a resource to families who are impacted by the genetic disorder and facilitate information to those engaged in research on the topic. To date, we have already begun funding groundbreaking research that has identified the function of the gene responsible for the disorder. The next crucial step is to develop an effective treatment or cure for those affected by the neurological disorder.

The new tower includes 150 rooms, most of them private; a dedicated children’s imaging department with a new, state-of-the art CT scanner, MRI with the most advanced cardiac imaging capabilities, nuclear medicine camera, ultrasound room and x-ray rooms. The 94-bed neonatal intensive care unit, still the region’s largest, has board-certified neonatologists in-house 24/7 and is the city’s only Texas Department of Health-designated Level 4 neonatal intensive care unit. The new tower also includes 15 additional ER rooms, bringing the total to 40.

A deserving honour for the Admiral!

David Robinson honored for his work with leadership and education

San Antonio Spurs great David Robinson was honored by the Kelly Cares Foundation on Monday in New York City.

The NBA Hall of Famer received the "Leadership in Education Award" for his family's work through the Robinson Family Foundation which contributes to community development and education. Robinson founded both the Carver Academy, and IDEA Public School for elementary-age children, and Admiral Capital Group, and investment group with a strong commitment to creating positive community social impact.

"I have been working for the last 25 years to provide a better educational opportunity for low-income families," Robinson said. "We simply must do a better job providing a quality education to all of our children, regardless of income level."

The foundation was established by Notre Dame head football coach Brian Kelly and his wife Paqui and "fulfills its mission through medical research, educational programming and community outreach."

Celebrating it's 10th anniversary, the foundation raised more than $1 million to support education and health initiatives at the annual Irish Eyes Gala on Monday.

Rudy will be hosting a youth basketball tournament, the Second Annual Flight 22 Classic - Elite AAU Team Showcase - from July 6 - July 8, 2018 in Baltimore, MD.

Gay told The Baltimore Sun last year that he started the tournament hoping it would cast a good light on the city.

"It's a chance for the city to be glamorized for something other than the negative," Gay told the newspaper. "Baltimore City has been negative for a long time, and this is something good that we can go out there and say that we have kids doing the right thing.

"...(These) kids look up to me, and the young generation looks up to those kids that are going to play. We need more good role models."

All proceeds will benefit Flight 22 Foundation efforts toward urban development, youth programs, resources, and scholarships.

In addition to attending the Spurs Summer Basketball Camps, and spearheading his own academy that he will soon open, Tony will be busy at the 2024 Paris Summer Olympics after he was named Ambassador of Education:

Tony Parker, France’s National Basketball Association (NBA) star, was named as the Paris 2024 education ambassador. The announcement was made beneath the Eiffel Tower by Paris 2024 President Tony Estanguet, at a basketball display laid on for media and the visiting International Olympic Committee Coordination Commission.

Asked what his role would be, Parker – who became chairman of Lyon Basket Feminine, a member of the French women’s basketball league, last year – said: “I will be involved in many events, such as the one here – although I don’t know if it will be possible to organize a better location than the Tour Eiffel.

“In the near future we will make an announcement about what plans we would like to make.

The Admiral will receive another honour for his work in education:

Spurs legend David Robinson to accept Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award
Spurs legend David Robinson will be honored with the Stuart Scott ENSPIRE Award next month, ESPN announced on Friday. Robinson will accept the honor at the fourth annual Sports Humanitarian Awards on July 17. ESPN will air clips from the evening during a one-hour program on July 24.

ESPN highlighted Robinson's launching of the Carver Academy in San Antonio. What began as a small academy blossomed into a publicly funded charter school comprised of more than 1,100 low income Hispanic and African American students. Every student in the past 16 years went to college, according to ESPN.

"NBA Legend David Robinson epitomizes leadership through service, giving considerable care to be strategic, thoughtful and impactful in his approach to philanthropy," ESPN's press release said.... He also received the 2002-03 NBA J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award and the 2008 Mannie Jackson Human Spirit Award.

Danny's spending his off-season being an inspiring example on and off the court:

Spurs star Danny Green returns to Valley with relief, skills
This week, Spurs shooting guard/small forward Danny Green made his return to the area with a “community donation day” on Wednesday before he hosts his annual basketball camp today.

Green paid a surprise visit to youth at the boys and girls club in McAllen and then had a chance to sign autographs and met with the Spurs-dominated locals at The Muscle Team (TMT). He said he’s happy to bring relief and joy to fans and people affected.

“We heard about what happened with the floods, the victims and everything,” Green said. “We wanted to try to take the time out to give back to them. Give them an opportunity to brighten their day, excite them however we can do it, give them some hope and let them know that we’re here to support.”

Jerry Leal, who owns TMT and has worked with Green in previous years, says the reason he comes down isn’t just about business or their friendship.

“Bringing somebody who stays clean and demonstrates good character on and off the court, I think that’s what's important when bringing somebody down -- that you want to spread some sort of influence or send a message to the community,” Leal said. “He’s really really involved in anything he gets his hands into. Doing things like this it’s not even a matter of “how,” it’s “when.”

The Pau Gasol Academy took place this past week.
Pau Gasol ACADEMY

Is a training program that lasts for a week and it is performed by qualified coaches, physical trainers, nutritionists and basketball coaches.

Work is specific and personalized, focused on the “self-training”: knowledge of the player and its skills and its possible improvements.

We want the participants to get the maximum transfer of the improvements in the details through games and amusement.
Each and every detail is important. Every player is important. We just show them the way.

http://paugasolacademy.com/en/philosophy/

It is comprised of three groups:
Pau Gasol Academy Special Olympics
Pau Gasol Academy
Pau Gasol Academy Rising Stars

These kinds of visits always choke me up. Good on Danny for helping to spread some positive vibes (video in link).

Green visits patients at El Paso Children's Hospital
San Antonio Spurs guard Danny Green has made El Paso a regular stop on his summer basketball camp tour. When he's in the Borderland, El Paso Children's Hospital is always on his list of places to visit, where he serves as a bright spot for the kids and their families.

"It's a very special moment to see a lot of these kids progress, especially those who beat it. Special times, special moments, and I just try to make people's days and hopefully give them some hope and inspiration to keep fighting."

Green toured the cancer ward for over an hour Friday, making new friends at every turn.

"These guys don't have to do stuff like this, but they do," said Luis Ochoa, a parent of one of the patients. "Especially, I mean he's not from here, this is El Paso, he's a long way from home. For him to come, it means a lot."
