Not sure why everyone brings up the "didn't miss a shot in his workout" thing. That shouldn't matter at all. We obviously made the wrong pick, but I'd be pissed if our decisions were based on whether a guy has a hot shooting streak in a workout. There is plenty of real game footage for any of draft prospects, so there is no reason to base a judgement about shooting ability on a workout. That's a Darko level drafting strategy.

Nobody said it was a drafting strategy.

Its just something that the player said happened. Its an example of the players willingness to perform for the organization. It means that, in his eyes, he had a great interview and really wanted the job. That means the organization rejected a player that really wanted to fit in and perform for the organization.

Van Gundy declined because--get this--he thought he could make the three-big rotation of Smith, Monroe, and Drummond work! Three months and a 5-23 opening to the season--in which Van Gundy had made Josh Smith the center of the offense-- later, even the Kings didn't want Smith. The Pistons consequently got stuck paying Smith more than 5% of the cap for five season, all because Van Gundy had the baffling notion that he could make that rotation work; and he killed another season from the very start.

Van Gundy went on to spend the majority of the immediate cap savings from stretching Smith's contract to sign Leuer to a $40 million deal.

This sort of headless, nonsensical behavior in both of his roles very much characterizes his tenure.
