Re: Portland's Off-Season Has Officially Arrived
Just messing around with the Trade Checker, does anyone think this sort of deal takes us in the right direction?
CJ McCollum, Myers Leonard & Caleb Swanigan for Tobias Harris, Pat Beverly, Austin Rivers and #13.
LAC gets their new lead guard and the high volume scorer they lack. CJ can be a 28ppg type in LAC and the face of that franchise IMO. Caleb has some potential to fill a bench scoring big man role and Myers can hit a 3 and body bigger Centers.
PDX retools around a more balanced roster. Tobias is a scoring swing forward that is highly underrated IMO. He can start at PF or SF and would compliment Nurkic quite well. Beverly is very cheap and is the ideal backup to Damian. He allows us to let Napier walk. Rivers is nothing great, but plays hard and was improved last season. Then we also get a lotto pick.
After this we deal Evan Turner and #24 in a Crabble type deal, not pure cap space but a stretchable smaller contract and cap space.
Come the draft, package Al-Fariq Aminu and #13 to move up slightly for Mikal Bridges.
PG - Damian Lillard (34) / Pat Beverly (14)
SG - Mikal Bridges (24) / Austin Rivers (18) / Pat Beverly (6)
SF - Tobias Harris (20) / Mo Harkless (18)
PF - Zach Collins (26) / Tobias Harris (14) / Mo Harkless (8)
C - Jusuf Nurkic (28) / Ed Davis (20)
The future of that squad looks brighter than our future right now, but not sure if it will bake soon enough to keep Damian happy. Then again, its a tough, young, defensive squad with high energy players and adequate 3PT shooting and those teams tend to overachieve.

I'd do it, but I'd looked to move Mo before moving Aminu. But I'm a big fan of Tobias and would love to see Bridges as a blazers.

I hadn't though about that.
theoretically, the Suns could have plenty of cap-space if they make a move or two; so it's possible that could target Nurkic
on the other hand, if they draft Deandre Ayton, and there's plenty of reason to indicate that's who they'd want, there would be no reason for them to go after Nurk. Ayton is kind of looking like the player Greg Oden was supposed to be, only with better offense

Re: Portland's Off-Season Has Officially Arrived
truth be told, I never watched Ayton, but I saw he can play PF, whether thats true or not
also, it could happen that Phoenix drafts Doncic, with whom Kokoskov worked in Slovenia national team and won Eurobasket
but yeah, if they get TOP 2 pick, they will pick one of those two players

You never know. We'll see who the Suns draft next month and speculate from there. If they draft Doncic then I suppose Nurkic is in play.
If Phoenix did offer Nurkic a really big front loaded deal then a sign and trade could come into play. I think Portland would need Josh Jackson coming back and they could then be in a position for a serviceable free agent centre such as Noel or Len in a MLE offer for a short term deal.
Personally I'd re-sign Nurkic but who knows what is lurking out there from other teams that would make Portland sweat at how much luxury tax they'd be paying? Just speculation right now.

There is zero chance Phoenix trades Josh Jackson for Nurkic.

Re: Portland's Off-Season Has Officially Arrived
I think this might be a good trade to pursue. Saves Milwaukee a ton of money, they get another 1st rounder...
POR Gets: Tony Snell, Matt Dellavedova, Khris Middleton (KM Acquired via Traded Player Exception)
MIL Gets: Al-Farouq Aminu, 24th Pick
3rd Team W/ Space Gets: Meyers Leonard, Caleb Swanigan, Future POR 2nds
They could use resulting cap space or the full MLE to add to their bench, as well as the two picks they have an potentially a traded player exception they get in the process. Bledsoe/Brogdon/Giannis/Aminu/Henson is a solid starting 5.
For us? Middleton would slide in as the starting SF, bringing Turner (ugh) and Harkless off the bench. We'd have the tax MLE to try to sign someone like Ilyasova to bring off the bench.
Lillard / Baldwin
McCollum / Turner
Middleton / Harkless
Collins / Ilyasova
Nurkic / Davis
I like it.

Re: Portland's Off-Season Has Officially Arrived
Yeah, Jackson was a 4th overall pick just a year ago... The Suns aren't going to trade the 4th overall pick for Nurkic on a front loaded deal, especially when it's likely they draft Ayton, Jackson, Bagley, or Bamba to be their starting C going forward.7-12-52 wrote:Downtown wrote:You never know. Re: Portland's Off-Season Has Officially Arrived
Sorry man, but I'm gonna bring up all the things that don't work and don't make sense with this series of ideas.BlazersBroncos wrote:Just messing around with the Trade Checker, does anyone think this sort of deal takes us in the right direction?
First off, Rivers has a player option which makes him untradeable until he opts-in (which if that happens, would be after the draft).
Also, Harris is much better at the 4. He doesn't have the lateral quickness to stay in front of SFs on defense, and he doesn't have the acceleration or handle to beat SFs off the dribble. He presents a lot more mismatches in his teams favor by playing PF, as he can bring the opposing 4 out of the key and can attack him off the dribble. He's also strong enough that he doesn't get abused on the other end. Bridges is more of a 3 than a two as well.. That team doesn't really fit together.
Also don't see why the Clippers would trade Harris for McCollum. You say McCollum gives them the high volume scorer they lack, but didn't they just resign Lou Williams, who averaged more PPG than CJ did last year and comes much cheaper? Not to mention they give up another volume scorer at a different position in order to duplicate the undersized SG/combo-guard position.. Not to mention they give up a lotto pick while taking back Leonard's abysmal contract.. Just doesn't make sense on either end.
I also don't see a team that'll move down from the top 10 to take on a year of Aminu. There's a big drop-off between 9 (where Bridges would likely be drafted by) and 13. We'd need 12 & 13 to be able to trade up high enough.
I want to ride out Turner's contract. We won't be able to use the money saved from dealing him in the next two years anyway, so why give up a pick (which is one of our only assets in which we could add young talent) and add dead money (via the Stretch Provision) for free agency periods where we might actually have cap space?

If the Suns want Nurkic, sign and trade including Chandler would be great. He can still play a bit a be a mentor for Zach, at least defensively.

If we S&T Nurkic, it better be for more than Tyson ******* Chandler.

It's a shame Atlanta has so many draft picks this year, as a Turner+#24 for Bazemore would really benefit Stotts.

Re: Portland's Off-Season Has Officially Arrived
Man the 20's of this draft look like they could be quite strong at the wing positions, I would not trade away our draft pick without really considering these prospects:
Dzanan Musa
Shake Milton
Troy Brown
Jacob Evans
Gary Trent Jr
Keita Bates-Diop
Chandler Hutchison
Isaac Bonga
Melvin Fraizer
There are going to be a couple guys from this list for us to choose from.

Re: Portland's Off-Season Has Officially Arrived
I think the only real way we can shake this roster up is to trade CJ, and I just don't think that'll happen as long as Olshey is GM. Maybe I'll be pleasantly surprised, but I don't expect any big moves this offseason. We'll probably go into the luxury tax to keep the team together. Win 45-49 games next year and get bounced in the 1st round again.

I'd rather see them go get Damarre Carroll out of Brooklyn with Turner and the pick (if possible).
If that pick isn't valuable enough to dump a contract or improve a position with a vet, then there's probably a decent gem Olshey should find late in the draft. Carroll and Bazemore likely don't change the Blazers trajectory in any meaningful way, but getting out of Turner would be nice. The pick is probably the Blazers best chance for a different maker. It's a microscopic chance, but it's admittedly a chance unlikely a veteran like the guys mentioned in this post, where you can see the ceiling from right here.

Be interesting to watch what happens to Toronto after they got swept (again) by Lebron. We've
discussed a DD for CJ trade but I tend to discount any such deal for that would remove one of
Portland's few reliable 3 point shooters.

I can't imagine the 24th pick in this year's draft being enough for any team to eat Turner's contract, but it'd certainly be nice.
a while back on the T&T board I proposed Harkless+Leonard+24 for Carroll. some liked it, some were convinced they're better off using their cap space on that big name all-star free agent that really wants to play with... Crabbe and Mozgov?
