Any thoughts on Larranaga's chops as a player development specialist seeing all the kids (and vet journeymen) play so well in Boston the last few season?

Crowder, Isaiah, Jaylen, Tatum, Smart, Rozier have all emerged as really good options under the tutelage of that staff.

Might that make Jay L more attractive to us?

I’d take Jay L over Fitz, I know Fitz got in with the Knicks and I think we dodged a bullet.

I know I’m in the minority here but why is Sam Mitchell up to these days besides being on TV? I think he would make a good coach for us with the rebuilding youth movement. He has always mentored players, his first was when he was actually with the Wolves in the mid 90’s, he had a lot to do with KG’s development and work ethic. Instilling these values in our young roster is very important.

I think I’m pulling for a guy that actually played in the NBA this time. I think he has a lot to offer on the sidelines that’s wasting away in the NBATV studios. Just a thought.

Do we have a shot at Ettore Messina. He’s at the top of my list. Imagine if we drafted Luka and got him as the coach. I’d feel a lot better about our situation.

I think he's too young and green for a Head Coaching job just yet.

But he has a strong player development background. I'd still place him behind Darvin Ham, Nate Tibbetts and Jay Larranaga.

Pierce has held various roles around the NBA for more than a decade. He started with the Cleveland Cavaliers as a player development coordinator from 2007 to 2010, and he joined the Memphis Grizzlies in 2011 in a similar capacity.

Pierce also spent a short stint with the Golden State Warriors before getting hired to Brett Brown's staff in Philadelphia.

LeBron James, who overlapped with Pierce in Cleveland, has called him one of his "favorite coaches," according to the Philadelphia Inquirer's Keith Pompey.

Hawks general manager Travis Schlenk met with Sixers assistant Lloyd Pierce on Friday to complete his initial round of interviews for the team’s vacant head coach position.

Pierce is the seventh candidate Schlenk interviewed for the job. The Knicks have since hired David Fizdale, leaving six candidates for the Hawks job: Pierce, Celtics assistant coach Jay Larranaga, Hornets assistant Stephen Silas, Hawks assistant Darvin Ham, Warriors assistant Jarron Collins and Blazers assistant Nate Tibbetts.

Schlenk said he was scheduled to meet with Hawks principal owner Tony Ressler on Saturday to go over the candidates. Schlenk said a new coach could be in place by the end of next week.

“We need Tony to be comfortable with (the final candidates), so there will be a stage where Tony meets some folks,” Schlenk said. “We feel good about the group. I think there are a lot of good choices.”

Lloyd pierce has strong player developmental background, and apparently he was one of the main people that got Marc gasol to be where he is at. that's what i read at least.

^It figures that the guy I know the absolute least about is the guy who becomes the early front runner.

I like pierce. I did some research on him a yesterday. cavs developmental coach, then coaching staff and developmental staff at Memphis and worked heavily with Marc gasol. he then worked with gsw, but was released when Mark Jackson came on board.

admittedly, I think I like tibbetts, larranaga, and silas better though..but what do i know

I think pierce may be the obligatory placeholder until the young talent is finally ready to compete.

His priority is to develop the 10+ players, 24 and younger that'll have guaranteed contracts which will keep growing through 2020.

It certainly feels that way. But at least it sounds like this guy he would be in complete harmony with Travis and his...overbearing style.

I think those two have the synergy to build some talented rosters. These next three draft classes are as good as one could ask for.

The 2020 one looks special especially with the upcoming one and done rules change and prospects reclassyfing on a whim.

Before Pierce joined the Sixers, he had assistant coaching stops with the Memphis Grizzlies and the Golden State Warriors. Pierce was also the Cleveland Cavaliers’ player development coordinator from 2007-10. But his experience in Philly is perhaps the most impressive thing on his resume.

Under Pierce’s guidance this season, the Sixers had one of the league’s top defenses. They were tied for sixth with the Miami Heat in opponent field-goal percentage at 44.9 percent. The Sixers were 10th in the league in points per game, averaging 106 this season.

Pierce also coaches the Sixers’ summer-league team and has had a key role in Robert Covington’s development into arguably one of the NBA’s top three-point shooters and defenders.

In March 2016, Pierce’s alma mater, Santa Clara, pursued him to coach its men’s basketball program.

While he attended Santa Clara, Pierce teamed up with backcourt mate Steve Nash. He helped lead the Broncos to consecutive NCAA tournament appearances in 1995 and 1996. After a four-year professional career with stops in Mexico, Australia, Germany and Turkey, Pierce returned to Santa Clara as an assistant coach from 2003-07 before moving to the NBA.
