WISH WE HAD A GM LIKE THIS

https://www.thestar.com/sports/raptors/opinion/2018/05/09/raptors-ujiri-says-put-it-on-me.html

Raptors’ Ujiri says, ‘Put it on me.’
Raptors president built the team that fell to Cleveland, and he’ll build the rebound.
Image
Masai Ujiri sounded like a GM who was sticking with his coach on Wednesday, and with much of the team that won a franchise-record 59 games in the regular season. (STEVE RUSSELL / TORONTO STAR)

Masai Ujiri gets emotional. He was fined US$25,000 for running on the floor at halftime of Game 3 in the Raptors’ second-round series and yelling at the officials; he was furious after that game. And after his Raptors were swept by the Cleveland Cavaliers, again, Ujiri flirted with the idea of firing his head coach. It could still happen.

“I can’t pull the culture reset off this year, can I?” said Ujiri, grinning, as he opened his season-ending press conference.

Last season, of course, Ujiri pushed for a change in playing style, the culture reset that resulted in more youth and more passing and more three-point attempts, and it all went well until his 59-win team was crushed by a Cavaliers team that fully expected it to be a war.

Ujiri is not under pressure in terms of ownership, or job status, or even reputation. But, for the first time in Toronto, he has to deal with falling significantly short of expectations. It’s different.

“I think there are many ways to get better,” said Ujiri, who voice rose at several times as he warmed to the subject at hand. “It’s on me. Put it on me. Forget all the other stuff that you guys are talking about. Put it on me. We’ll get better. We’ll get better here. We believe in this city, this country, this team here and move forward. I put it on myself.”

Ujiri has lived a charmed life in Toronto in some ways. He didn’t trade Kyle Lowry even though he tried, and it worked out. He traded Andrea Bargnani and Rudy Gay, and it worked out. He kept head coach Dwane Casey — more than once, truth be told — and it worked out. He built a franchise that got players out of the draft no matter the slot, and suddenly he has so many NBA-calibre players that it won’t be possible to pay them all. And the win totals, year by year, keep rising.

And then his 59-win team, which expected to play into late May or even June, was reduced to a laughingstock in another sweep against LeBron James. And the problem with unpacking that is that if you want to pick a culprit, you can pick almost anything.

“I go back to Game 1 (a 113-112 overtime loss), to be honest,” said Ujiri. “What turned things there? Giving up a lead or the calls, the missing layups. All those things. The margin of error in the NBA is this small. I know how confident we came into the first game. Not just from us, not just from our fans, not just from the players, but even from you guys. Everybody felt good about it.

“Even after that game, everyone felt good about it. OK, why did we give that game away? But for me the margin of error when you play in the playoffs is this small. There are turning points and Game 1 for us was like that ... for some reason we just kind of lost something there.”

All true. The hard part in Toronto is how to get better. Casey’s status remains uncertain, but seems less precarious than it was Tuesday. The salary cap will become more of an issue, and Serge Ibaka and Norm Powell remain liabilities. And while Kyle Lowry had his best post-season, DeMar DeRozan’s series against Cleveland was a devastating experience. And you can’t win a title with Lowry and DeRozan as your best players. That was always the case.

It’s a rich man’s problem: When you have climbed this high, it’s harder to figure out where the next rungs on the ladder will be. When asked about the future, Ujiri said this team would not tank, not that that’s a viable option with this many good players anyway. He talked about how if people are talking about you, at least you’re relevant. And he tried to remind people, as much as himself, where this team came from.

“Yeah, everybody can question Casey all they want, you can question Kyle all you want, you can question DeMar DeRozan all you want,” said Ujiri. “Guess what? I have to look at a body of work. As a leader I have to look at a body of work that had been done over the last five years and think what's the last five years, and what's the next five years ahead. And that's what I have to do, and that's what I'm going to do. Yes, there are weaknesses. And yes there are strengths ... And I have to figure out a way.”

That’s where he’s at. Ujiri has mistakes on the ledger, and credits, too. He has young talent, and aging infrastructure. He has no superstars, but he has assets.

“I come back to that margin of error — we have to go through great players to win, and we have to find great players too,” said Ujiri. “It’s not at every time that every organization is going to have that generational player. That comes with strategy, luck, planning, winning, many things, and I believe we have that structure and we’ve created that culture here. We can get there at some point.”

He really believes it. It’s not that the pressure is on Masai Ujiri, but the expectations are. The paths to the next level look perilously tricky. Maybe they’ve peaked. It’s not the worst problem to have. But it is his to solve.

Masai: Put it on me.

*proceeds to fire coach*

The Raptors job is interesting, Lowry is leaving his prime. DDR still can't shoot 3s, their books are terrible. Boston and Philly seem poised to run the East in the future so whoever gets that job might be the one dealing with a rebuilding situation in a year or two.

Somehow Demar DeRozan shoots 39% from 3 against Washington while attempting 4 per game, but then shoots 0% from 3 against the Cavs.

That is less than what Otto Porter makes.

Including his 2018-19 salary, it'll be a 5 year $121M arrangement

I see this kind of thing as a means to undercut the competitive framework surrounding the CBA/salary cap.

Extremely rare talent gathering together in big markets, winning a ton of games while taking less and making up the difference from endorsements and lucrative local ventures, meanwhile other teams are forced to pay overpriced market prices for inferior talent.

It's dumb.

My thoughts on Becky Hammon. Honestly coming up, I probably watched more women's college and pro ball than anyone on the site. I'm for women's rights to but the truth is that most women don't match up even when it comes to simple stuff like comedy. It's just always a lesser product. The same is the case for basketball. I wouldn't vouch for any female in terms of coaching.

However, there is always an exception to the rule. There is one woman I would never laugh at when it comes to coaching men and it's Hammon. Idk if Steve Nash would be a great coach but that's who I compare her to as both a player and a person.

She has an extremely high basketball IQ. Top notch. Her demeanor is grade A and her leadership is perfect. By that I mean she reminds me of Nash or Kerr. She is not going to be meek but nor will she be the over compensating woman who acts halfway like a serious man and wants to be overly strict.

Everyone on the Pop tree isn't great. Of course my Wizards always proves stuff like that to be true as we ended up with Don Newman as an assistant to Wittman. I honestly think that we hired him just because he was on the Spurs and he was even a worse coach than Wittman.

However, I truly believe she is much more like Pop, Kerr, Bud, etc. I see he'd being a great teacher, molding great PGs, and having a system with alot of passing and ball movement. I truly believe that this is not a gimmick.

She maybe getting forced on people some and probably for the wrong reasons. I think Silver really wants her more so because she is a woman but the truth is that I honestly trust her. She will be great if given a chance. Needs a team with a star that let's her coach and doesn't undermine her. Someone who would put the woman thing aside and give her a real chance. Someone like Giannis but you may have to get rid of some malcontents like Bledsoe. However, I honestly could see her helping Bledsoe reach his potential and him loving her.

I just want people to know that she isn't some clueless female or some woman getting extra credit just because she is a woman. She doesn't have that annoying voice or opinion. I honestly think women like Lisa Leslie and Swin Cash are so cringe worthy on TV. She isn't like them. She isn't Molly Querim or some other female who you want to tell Shut up when they start talking sports.

Canadace Parker and Kara Lawson seem knowledgeable. Cheryl Miller was a great coach. I still don't want them or any other woman near my team. It truly won't work. Hammon is my 1 exception. She could really do it. I would fire Scott Brooks in a heat beat for her

I guess this could be put in the 2014 draft thread but apparently if the Wizards had just kept their draft pick and drafted based on need, they may have been better off. The first 4 centers taken were Embiid (3), Nurkic (16), Capella(25), and Jokic (44). If the Wizards had drafted just based on need and were a lottery team, they could have theoretically ended up with Nurkic and/or Jokic, provided of course that Ernie didn't take another center like Bairstow. If the Wizards made the playoffs, they may have drafted Capella, but their 2nd rounder would have been too late to take Jokic.

Simmons and Lebron are a bad mix together. If Philly makes that deal, the Wizards should offer to trade Wall and Beal for Simmons and the Lakers pick they own. The goal here would be to round out Philly's roster with a backcourt to complement their front court. They'd be left with:

PG Wall/McConnell
SG Beal
SF Covington
PF Lebron/Saric
C Embiid/Saric
:o

We'd jumpstart the rebuild with a potential HOF-caliber young player in Simmons plus the #10 pick in the draft and our #15 pick. We also retain Porter, Oubre and Sato. Imagine drafting a big with our #10 and a shooting guard at #15. Our lineup of the future would look like this:

PG Sato
SG Oubre/#15 pick
SF Porter/Oubre
PF Simmons/Porter
C #10 pick

That's an incredibly versatile and switchy defense, with good catch-and-shoot shooters to spread the floor around Simmons.

Only problem is, I can't make it work financially. After signing Lebron, Philly doesn't have the cap space to absorb that much salary. They can send back Bayless as ballast, but that (along with Simmons) is only enough salary for Wall. Not Beal too.

There may be a way to pull it off by utilizing Redick as a S&T for Lebron and then utilizing Amir Johnson in a S&T for Beal, but it would be complicated and it would probably involve them unloading Fultz too.

BTW, Jordan made the playoffs in 2008 not Tapscott. I think their poor start in 2008-09 played a role but yeah not beating LeBron didn't help.

Boston will have an interesting dilemma on their hands when Hayward and Irving come back. You can make the argument that one of them has to go.

Their cap situation is in pretty decent shape. They can hold together their core of Kyrie, Smart, Brown, Hayward, Tatum, Morris and Horford for quite some time. The only cap casualty I see is that they would ultimately have to choose between Rozier or Smart. It'll be tough to keep both and my guess is that they'll keep Smart. Watch Ainge make a deal next year where they trade away Rozier for a future pick. Ainge never lets a player walk away without recouping some value.

* This summer: Smart and Morris are up for new contracts, and they have the room to retain both, though they will probably seek just a 2-year deal for Morris. Baynes is also up for a new contract and can be retained if he's cheap, but they also have Daniel Theis, who was a competent rookie for 900 minutes this season.
* 2019: Rozier is up for a new contract and he will probably have to go in order to preserve enough luxtax room to retain Jaylen Brown next year (or Rozier will be retained and Smart will get traded away).
* 2020: Brown is up for a new contract and they'll have the cap room to afford him.
* 2021: Tatum is up for a new contract and Horford comes off the books in time to pay him.

They also have a bunch more future 1sts coming their way. They have Sacramento's 2019 pick. They have the Clippers' top 15 protected 2019 pick, and they have Memphis' top 9 protected 2019 pick (which probably won't convey until 2020). Cheap depth shouldn't be a problem. And with some luck, one of those draft picks will be the big man to replace Horford when his contract expires in 3 years.

Boston will be an elite team for at least the next 8 years. They're the new San Antonio.

I think they keep Rozier. I don't know if Ainge is going to want to pay Irving the super max. I say it's interesting b/c of the situation you just laid out. If they kept Smart, their payroll jumps to probably $125 million next season. In 2019, they are faced with either signing Irving to a super max or keeping Rozier at say...$15 to $16 million per. So I do agree that talent wise they're in good shape but their books could be all sorts of chaotic in a year or two. This is why I think they'll try and find a trade for Hayward or Irving. Hayward was always redundant with Tatum and Brown there, I just don't see how they can pay him $31 million per year for him when they get more production out of two young guys making a combined $15 million.
