Lloyd Pierce named new Hawks Head Coach

Amusingly, the Philadelphia 76ers assistant turned 42 on Friday and he seemingly spent some of his birthday celebration meeting with Atlanta’s front office.

Still, Pierce seems to snugly fit within the parameters of the Hawks’ coaching search as a young, player development-driven coaching prospect with room to grow in Atlanta. It should also be noted that a third meeting of this stature could mean that the discussions have turned to contract talks, though no direct reporting is available to that end. Philadelphia is now eliminated from the NBA Playoffs as well, leaving little in the way of obstructions between Pierce and a potential offer from Atlanta.

I do hope he surrounds himself with veteran assistants to help ease the transition from Assistant to HC.

Sources: Hawks expected to offer head-coaching job to Sixers assistant Lloyd Pierce

Philadelphia 76ers assistant Lloyd Pierce met with Atlanta Hawks officials for a third time on Friday, emerging as the primary focus of the franchise's head-coaching search, league sources told ESPN.

A formal offer is expected as soon as today, league sources said.

Pierce traveled to Atlanta and met with team officials, including general manager Travis Schlenk, on Friday at the team's facility, league sources said.

Pierce first met with Schlenk a week ago, and he met with Atlanta majority owner Tony Ressler earlier this week.

As Atlanta moves into a complete rebuild, Pierce's experience with Philadelphia's process and his strong background in player development have made an impression on Schlenk and ownership. Atlanta has four picks in the top 33 of the June NBA draft.

I wish there was an option between 'ecstatic' and 'lukewarm'. I feel promising about the (expected) hire but need to see/hear more from him regarding his vision for the organization.

Clearly whoever ends up with the job will get my full support. Guess I'm not ready to go all gaga over it.

Mark Bradley wrote:Why NBA teams - and the Hawks - should trust Philly’s Process

The Hawks are seeking someone to replace Mike Budenholzer, the 2015 NBA coach of the year...The Hawks’ search is in tune with the tenor of these times.

NBA teams might never admit it, but Hinkie’s Process has become their North Star. What are the Hawks under Travis Schlenk doing if not tanking?

The growing consensus is that a rebuilding franchise – doesn’t need a Larry Brown so much as it needs a Brett Brown. His first four seasons with the Sixers produced an aggregate record of 75-253. This year, with Brown still in place, Philly went 52-30, claimed the East’s No. 3 seed ahead of Cleveland and won a first-round series.

From Kevin Arnovitz’s ESPN story on The Process in 2018: “While the Sixers were racking up losses, head coach Brett Brown, with the aid of a staff that is quickly earning a reputation as one of the league's best, was instituting principles and traditions that carried the Sixers through the lean seasons … (Brown) helped build a culture in Philadelphia in which a diverse, young roster has forged close relationships and players pull for one another as they learn as much about the world as they do about basketball.”

If you were hiring five years ago, you wanted somebody with a Spurs pedigree. If you’re hiring now, you probably want somebody versed in The Process. Pierce is. The Hawks would be sagacious [to] bring him here. That could happen any minute.

wait and see approach. My BIG interest will be watching the youth develop. What I want from the new coach is, let the kids play, teach them a good nba culture, have a system that will help them integrate modern nba plays and styles, tank for the top pick next year and let the kids play

:D

Hawks must get new head coach in place, ASAP! Four draft picks in the top 35 means, Hawks either take four
new rookies or trade some picks. GM & coach must decide what to do. Hawks will have the opportunity to move
up or down in the draft - - - Or, stay where the chips may fall.

With all the youngsters already on the roster, Hawks seem to look kiinda like a super G League team. Too good
to be down there and not good enough to be a top NBA team. Tank again? Or, with these new draft picks plus
what we already have, plus whatever free agents we might sign, who knows?

Play the kids. Develop the kids. Run to win! Right now we're between a rock and a hard place. We have no
idea what we really have, once the season is here. It will be so different from what we opened the season with
last fall.

Ah, well. It's some time before the NBA season opens. However, the WNBA season opener is just around the corner!

Sir Lloyd Pierce? He’s the chosen one! He’s gonna have some ups n downs...mainly downs but if he is as good a player developer as Philly fans claim, then I’m happy. In 3 years we go after a real head coach though. Unless this guy just comes out of nowhere and starts winning like...ugh..Brad Stevens...(that took a lot out of me).

With all the picks the Hawks will have over the next 3 years, I'd like to see an investment / development of the G-leadue. I'd rather them develop here in the Hawks system than disappear over-seas. Also gives them the chance to get some spot NBA minutes. Talking about later picks here.

Hawks place-holder coach could slide to the GL when it"s time to compete :-?

Jokes aside, G-lrague needs to become like MLB AAA and be a key pipeline for development and flexibility.

Ideally yes, however the Hawks can only have 2 Two way contract players. Any other GL player can be signed by any NBA team.
We will have to sign the later picks yo nba contracts and assign them to gleague.
Until each tam has their oen team it's difficult to use it as a true minor league team.

You shouldn’t call anybody that...it’s just not PC..

The second pick in the NBA draft will be made by.....the Memphis Grizzlies...and so that means the Atlanta Hawks will have the first pick in the 2018 NBA draft....

Prayiiiiing to hear this..(not exactly though cuz honestly I want a western conference team to get the 2nd pick but I don’t care who it is...just not the Mavs..or the Lakers obviously...)

I don't like the signing. What about Pierce's demeanor or resume indicates that he will turn the Hawks into the GSW of the east?????

:D

I'm happy. Hawks have a coach. Right now, we must trust the system that brought him here. We, the Hawks,
had several choices. Pierce was chosen early, before everyone else had hired their coaches and we just took
the leftovers. Hawks decided early and grabbed their choice.

Lloyd Pierce has begun a new journey. This is his first opportunity to be a head coach. He has assisted in building
a team before, but now, he's the head man and he has many, many choices facing him as he now joins the huddle,
deciding who will be picked in the draft. He and the GM will be key thinkers, along with their scouting team. Also,
since he is familiar with almost all the free agents becoming available, he will have a voice there too.

So many very important decisions to be made in the near future is why I am excited to have our coach on board.
Now, we look forward to all the new things that will be happening. Example: Pierce will be selecting his entire
staff of assistant coaches - - The draft - - Free agency!!!

GO ATLANTA DREAM! Season starts this month !!

8-)
