To date, the defining snapshot of Scott Perry’s term with the Knicks is the GM holding his hand to his forehead the night of Feb. 6. A look of horror stretched across Perry’s face.

From his Garden seat, Perry had just seen Kristaps Porzingis crumple to the court with what turned out to be an ACL tear. He was introduced quickly to the Knicks curse – a franchise that is title-less since 1973.

Knicks president Steve Mills is praying Perry owns a happier facial expression Tuesday night in Chicago when he represents the Knicks on the lottery dais, holding a 1.6 percent chance of earning the No. 1 pick.

Maybe a fist slam on the table — a la Dave DeBusschere in 1985 — is in order. After all, the Knicks are long overdue, having not moved up in a lottery since the inaugural one in ’85 that netted Patrick Ewing.


Perry, a superstitious sort, will wear a lucky tie and go through some rituals, including “visualization.”

“I’m a little more superstitious about my daily routine leading up to a big event like the lottery,” Perry said Monday. “I’ll make sure to get a good morning workout in followed by a few quiet moments of visualization in my room, which will help with any nervous energy. I don’t have any lucky charms, but I’m considering wearing a tie being sent to me by a friend.”

Mills said last week Perry “needs to bring us some luck, and I’m counting on him to do that.” As the ninth seed, the Knicks also have a 6.1 percent chance of landing in the top three, where they likely would take Slovenian small forward stud Luka Doncic, who is playing for Real Madrid in Spain.

This is the first time the Knicks will be on the road for the lottery as the event has never been held outside the New York/New Jersey area since its inception. It will coordinate with Chicago’s draft combine that begins Wednesday.

Anytime you have an opportunity to improve your team, it is important,’’ Perry said. “I am confident we will be able to find a prospect who can help our team regardless of where we pick, as well as our scouting staff’s ability to maximize our draft position.”

Perry sat on the dais once before, in 2010 with the Pistons, when he was VP of basketball operations. The Pistons stuck at seven and selected center Greg Monroe.

During Perry’s time in Orlando, the Magic never had much luck moving up in the lottery, but in his brief stay in Sacramento last June, the Kings jumped from eight to three. (Sacramento picked fifth because of a prior trade.)

In 2015, Mills, as GM, sat on the dais, and his head drop and exasperated look said it all. The Knicks sank from the second seed to the fourth seed. It turned out a blessing in disguise, putting them in ideal position to nab Porzingis. Had the Knicks stuck at two or fell one spot to three, they were eyeing draft busts Jahlil Okafor and D’Angelo Russell, both of whom are now with the Nets.

Last May, the Knicks tabbed legend Walt Frazier, currently an MSG Network broadcaster, to sit on the dais. Despite wearing a king’s purple-and-gold suit, the team fell back from seventh to eighth.

The likeliest scenario is the Knicks staying put at nine (81 percent). Mills said a small forward would be the pick “in an ideal world’’ because of their roster makeup. But Perry has said the position may not matter if the available player’s talent level is considerably higher.

The draft is noted for its top-level big men. The consensus top three are Arizona big man Deandre Ayton, Doncic, who would fit perfectly on the Knicks roster, and power forward Marvin Bagley III. With Porzingis at the 4-5, Ayton and Bagley aren’t necessarily aching roster needs but conceivably could play alongside Porzingis.

“We know that franchise players are extremely hard to come by,” Perry said. “With that said, each draft features a healthy number of players who are capable of contributing to winning teams either as starters or in important rotational roles. Our goal is to draft players who fit our plan and our culture, and develop them to the best of our ability as we become a sustainable, winning franchise.”

If the Knicks stick at nine, the small forwards they have interest in include the two Bridges — the more athletic Miles of Michigan State and the better two-way player with a championship pedigree in Mikal of Villanova.

If the Knicks take Alabama point guard Collin Sexton, it would be a strong indictment of last season’s lottery pick, Frank Ntilikina. DraftExpress, the preeminent mock draft, has the Knicks taking Sexton at 9. (It is unlikely point guard Trae Young falls that far.)

The last time the Knicks selected ninth, former GM Scott Layden tabbed Georgetown bust Michael Sweetney.

“We need talent, we need athletic players and the position will determine who we pick, but in an ideal world, we’d like to get a wing player,” Mills said last week.
