Mike Woodson & Clippers Part Ways...will that open the door for his Knicks return?

Post#1 » by 2010 » Wed May 16, 2018 3:33 am

Ex-Knicks head coach Mike Woodson is done in Los Angeles, according to multiple reports, where he was a Clippers assistant coach to Doc Rivers the past three seasons.

Woodson interviewed for the Knicks’ head-coaching job and expressed interest to The Post in joining David Fizdale’s staff two weeks ago. Woodson gave Fizdale his first assistant-coaching bench job in Atlanta and they were together from 2004-08.

“I love David,’’ Woodson told The Post two weeks ago. “I gave him his first job on the bench — I know he worked one season before in Golden State. We’re very close. I’m sure he would call.’’

Woodson’s contract was up and Rivers is making him the scapegoat for a defensive regression this past season, with the Clippers allowing 109 points per game. Woodson was put in charge of the defense at midseason. Of course, the Clippers were without their best defenders in Avery Bradley and Patrick Beverley, and Deandre Jordan became less of a rim protector. Woodson coached the Knicks to a 54-28 record in 2012-13.

The Post has reported Fizdale is expected to bring in Keith Smart, his Memphis assistant whom he worked with in Miami. Nick Van Exel, also a Memphis coach, is a strong candidate to come aboard as well.

what's funny is he got heavily criticized for his switching defense when he was the knicks coach. but now switching is the best way to slow down those spread offenses that emphasize high picks and create insane spacing because of 3 point shooters with deep range.

I don't really want him but, I'm ok with him I guess. I'm on to the draft now. The next 5 loooong wks will be all about the draft. Just sign a competent staff whoever it is.

Bring back Woody now! He would be a great fit at #2 behind Fizdale and help this team with his experience.

I have no problem with Woody as a coach but I rather just sever all ties with anyone that's worked here in the past - regardless of if they've had success or not.

New era for ya' sorry suds.

Where there's Woodson, Raymond Felton can't be far behind...so NO.

I know a lot of people don’t want Woody back but I wouldn’t mind him as an assistant at all. A lot of players respect him around the league and he’s knowledgeable about defense. I kinda hope he comes back to be honest.

Another reason why not moving up in the draft sucks is cause all the mocks will still have us taking the same players. If we would of got top 3 then all the choices would of made these next 5 weeks a little more fun.

just say no - mr. potatohead was the HC who put so much faith in JR who was most responsible for the failures in the playoffs that year they won 54 games. when he was playing like crap he should have been on the bench. but instead he got flagrant foul. plus i choose to forget all the other stupid stuff he did. and then the next season after JR has surgery, he gets more playing time! gee i wonder if that had anything to do with them winning less games and missing the playoffs. ugh

he got criticized because he never adjusted his switch defense even though chandler or whatever center always ended up defending the opposing team's pg.

the opposing teams purposely forced the mismatch and woodson never made any adjustments to not have that happen.

Also take into consideration Melo and JR never had any interest giving effort on defense.

Switching only works when you have players that can guard multiple positions. If you don't have that, you just end up in mismatches, and get beat continuously, similar to what happened to us all the time.

so as a coach he never had the balls to actually coach, especially since melo and especially smith were never in a position to call the shots.

so if woodson can't get his guys to care on defense as a coach, what makes you think he can do as an assistant coach?

oh but fizdale likes him and fizdale is the flavor of the month so woodson doesn't suck, his defense is good, his switch defense was never a joke, blah blah blah etc.

if you don't have the personnel, you make adjustments to what you have.

if you can't, then you're not good at being a coach.

Im not in favor of bringing Woodson back, but it starts with the players/culture. Past regimes have basically encouraged immaturity without consequence.
