Is Gianluigi Buffon the GOAT GK?

Post#1 » by clyde21 » Tue May 15, 2018 7:55 pm

I think that's close to being indisputable at this point, right?

Who has an argument over him? Oliver Kahn? Peter Schmeichel?

I'd say he has a very good case given his massive longevity at the top level, along with Kahn. In terms of accolades Iker Casillas is right there with him, but of course a lot of that is down to the quality of his team mates (as is the case with any all time great). Edwin Van der Sar was a monster for some time as well.

Lev Yashin is often mentioned as one of if not the greatest goalkeeper of all time, and obviously massive quality aside, it's hard to know how much of that verges on folklore given that he never played for a top club in a major league.

I don't think there will ever be a consensus GOAT goalkeeper, though. There are so many factors and variables at play. Gigi will be remembered in the pantheon of greats, that's all that matters.

Yes, pretty much no argument there.

sorry it looks like footage from WW1. Ridiculous how poorly sports footage seems to age.

I think we can at least agree that the worst goalkeeper of all time is Harry Kane:

edit: Actually nevermind, he's still better than Joe Hart.

Buffon is fantastic.

Gordon Banks is the greatest of all time :-)

Sad to see Buffon go, though. Great keeper!
