Most surprising pick or slide?

Post#1 » by Laimbeer » Wed May 16, 2018 3:17 pm

What do you think will be the biggest surprise to most people in the draft? Someone going higher or sliding.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

I predict Robert Williams and Troy Brown to jump, and Collin Sexton and Michael Porter to drop a decent amount.

Dallas should and would snatch up Bamba if the first 4 picks are Ayton-Doncic-Bagley-JJJ and there's even the slightest concern over MPJ's health status

All centers are going to slide. Hard to tell who jumps. I think Shai Gilgeous-Alexander jumps into the top 10 and I think there’s a chance Magic take him there.

Zhaire Smith, Dzanan Musa and Kevin Knox Are lottery picks I think. Wendell Carter probably also a lottery pick, but I can see him sliding just outside the lottery. Mitchell Robinson is already sliding. Teams see him as a project. I think Robert Williams also slides out of the lottery.

How do you feel about the eversopopular Bamba to Gobert comparison? I think it will be quite difficult for Bamba to ever reach that, but curious what others think and how that relates to him potentially sliding given today's game.

I see that comparison and I don’t think Gobert is skilled enough to say Bamba can’t reach that. A lot of what Gobert does is with his size and quickness. But I also see how Gobert was an issue in the playoffs because his offense was lacking. In the NBA you need defense, but when guys are running all over you you need to be able to take advantage of the mismatch on the other end. Gobert wasn’t skilled enough offensively to do that.

Won't surprise me if Sexton slides relative to where he's mocked. Mitchell Robinson might slide into the second round as the playoff teams may not want to touch him.

From what I hear RW has a promise to the Clippers for one of their picks.

That wouldn’t surprise me since it looks like they’re letting DeAndre walk. Hopefully they re-sign Harrell though. The Clippers have been saying they’re looking to tough tough players, kind of like how the Celtics draft. Williams comes from a tough-cultured team in Texas A&M. West has also said he’s looking for players with high upside, even if they need developing and he fits that as well. I think with the other Clippers pick they take a wing, like Miles Bridges if he’s available. With the way they used Tyron Wallace last year, I think they could also take Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Not sure how much the combine will impact him, because the hype around Young is already overrated imo as far as teams true valuation of his skills. SO he may never had been really a top 10 pick anyway but since most mocks place him there I'd say odds are greater he won't go before 12 .
as far as surprising riser, I'd say Knox has the potential to crack the top 10 and Jontay has the potential to crack the late lottery.
as far as a surprising slide, I'd say Carter could go late teens
as far as a strong possibility to slide, depending on the medicals Micheal Porter could go later than Jontay.

I like Jontay Porter, but I also think Moritz Wagner has a chance to ahead of Porter. The way he shoots threes is pretty unique for someone his size, he bring energy and he runs the floor really well.

I think DAJ is gonna opt in

Jontay is going to be a better shooter than Mo imo. His form is better, quicker release and he's like 2 1/2 years younger.

Hard to tell, hes had contrasting takes. I don’t think the Clippers want him on the team, but he has said that he wants to be a Clipper his entire career. His free throw percentage has gone up though. It’s possible he opts in and they trade him.

Yeah it's hard to get a read on where Wagner will go I'm expecting he will go higher than most mocks have him but don't think it will be higher than Jontay.

I think Miles Bridges will go in the 6-10 range. Some teams will love the fact he went back to school when he was a guaranteed lottery pick, and he looks way better as a shooter and athlete when it's just him out there going through drills.

Watch for Jerome Robinson to rise into the top 20. He's pretty much the closest thing to Jamal Murray in this draft. If he measures out over 6'6", it will only help his stock even more.

I disagree about Mitchell Robinson. I think he's a Willie Cauley-Stein-caliber big and he's very likely to go in the top 14 - 17.

He just opted out of the Combine. Maybe he has a promise. I doubt it's that high.

Also WCS. He's pretty terrible. Flashes on occasion but overall he's been bad at basketball.
