Covington would play close to 30 minutes per game on THAT team. There is no way in hell a 34 year old JJ Redick will play more minutes than Covington on THAT team. There is no logic in saying that for THIS team to be a contender, Covington NEEDS to be the the 7th or 8th man, which is what you said. All contenders over the years have 7th or 8th men who are much worse than Covington. All contenders over the years have their 5th best player at a similar level to Covington (if not worse). The only one here being obtuse is you.
Covington is just a role player. That's all he will ever be. The sooner you accept that, the sooner you will get over it when he's traded for a REAL difference maker or moved to the bench to make place for a REAL difference maker on both ends of the floor.
I agree that he is a role player. Like Danny Green, the role playing 4th or 5th best player on the 2014 champion Spurs, or Trevor Ariza, the role playing 4th or 5th best player on the 2009 champion Lakers or the 65 win 2018 Rockets, or JR Smith, the role playing 4th or 5th best player on the 2016 champion Cavs, or James Posey, the role playing 5th best player on the 2006 champion Heat. Covington can and will be a starter and 4th or 5th best player on this team when it's contending for a championship.
If he can develop more of a well rounded offensive game and not be a liability on defense against certain teams you may be right.
