Blazer's SB NationPotential Candidates for the Trail Blazers’ Trade Exception
Portland has a big piece they can use to acquire a new player, but it’s expiring soon
The Portland Trail Blazers are capped out for the next few years, but that doesn’t mean they’re out of options to acquire a player. The Trail Blazers have a $13.0 million Traded Player Exception generated in the Allen Crabbe trade last summer.
The Crabbe TPE expires on July 25, so it will be use-it-or-lose-it time for Portland over the next two months.
Any player acquired via trade would likely replace impending Free Agent Jusuf Nurkic and with that in mind, a few targets emerge:
Dewayne Dedmon, Atlanta Hawks:
Dedmon quietly put together a very impressive 2017-18 season and found success in Atlanta on both sides of the ball—he had the best offensive season of his career, spurred by his newfound three-point shooting, and was a key contributor to a Hawks defense that got 3.0 points per 100 possessions better when he was on the floor and defended at roughly a league-average level when he was out there (a very strong performance for Atlanta, which finished 26th in team defense last season).
Dedmon has a $7.2 million player option ($900k of which is tied up in bonuses) for the 2018-19 season and public opinion is split as to whether or not he’ll pick that up. His decision is due June 29, so the Trail Blazers will know whether or not he’s available by the time free agency opens. If he does, bringing him in on a much cheaper, but also much shorter, contract than Nurkic would require would be a cheap way for Portland to replace their incumbent big man without losing too much value in the process. Nurkic is a better pure defensive center but lacks the outside shot and defensive versatility Dedmon possesses. If Dedmon opts out, then a normal signing won’t be possible—he wouldn’t opt out of $7.2 million to take $5.3 million unless something goes horribly wrong during his free agency—but a sign-and-trade between Atlanta and Portland would make sense. Dedmon could lock in more total money, Portland could grab a big man who matches their timeline, and Atlanta wouldn’t have as much leverage to squeeze assets out of the Trail Blazers.

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread (Part 2)
Is there a workable deal here between Hawks and Portland? Is it all moot as Dedmon will definitely opt out this summer?

How about this?

Code: Select all
The combination of Taurean Prince, John Collins and four first-round draft choices would be quite the young core moving forward.
And the Hawks will almost certainly be among the teams drafting at the top of the 2019 draft as well. Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread (Part 2)

I'd even give Den pick 30 or 34 for that deal. Just a efficient way of utilizing your cap space.

ufck that ish. DEN is desperate. We shouldn't be pick swapping at all in that deal.
I'd rather rent capspace for '19 1sts, honestly.

I like the idea in principle but why would Atlanta do that without getting something assest back from Portland? Portland needs us more than we need them in this trade. They can't sign him outright.

I've been touting the Faried and #14 trade, however I just realized we can't make the trade at the draft, we don't have capspace under this years CBA to take on Faried's contract.
Any trade would have to occur July 1st when the new league year kicks in. So Denver and Hawks would have to agree to trade in principle but it won't be announced at the draft.

Re: Atlanta Hawks Official Trade Ideas Thread (Part 2)
Random idea to get Bud back with Dennis and Baze (after all, he signed them to their deals):
Atlanta sends Schroder, Bazemore, 30, 34
Milwaukee sends Bledsoe, Delladova, DJ Wilson, 17
Why for Atlanta - Continue to tank another year, get more movable pieces, and consolidate some draft equity
Why for Milwaukee - Schroder/Bledsoe is a lateral move from a talent standpoint, but it gives Milwaukee another legitimate ballhandler who can create for others. Plus, they greatly shore up their wing rotation which they badly needed.

Is Schroder-Bledsoe a lateral move? I'm not sure many around the league think that.

Right now, Bledsoe is better than Dennis talent wise and salary wise. We aren't going to dump two bad deals and get a teens pick.

How far off is a Melo for bazemore deal? Assuming Melo would waive his NTC and agree to a buyout with atl.

Lol ...um I’m the wrong one to ask. I think Melo is the most garbage player in the history of organized sports.

I don’t disagree but the trade saves a little Atlanta longterm salary and helps the tank if they decided to keep him. It’s not like the hawks wants to win next year. So would a frp be what is required to make the deal? More? Less?

It’s not about any of that for me. If I’m rebuilding or on the verge of a ring, I don’t want him in my locker room..he makes the team so lazy.

Well the initial post was assuming Melo would agree to a buyout so he wouldn’t ever be in the locker room.

Depends. Getting out of a year of Bazemore's deal has value enough but then we have to consider if the Hawks GM values being less encumbered cap-wise in 2019 as opposed to having ~10 million less cap in 2018. The idea is if he weighs being able to extract a better prospect or pick with cap this year as opposed to next.
Short of there being a better current deal for the aforementioned, I think this trade has legs. I imagine Melo wouldn't disagree to the trade, Atlanta is the home of the favorable buyout after all. He can walk away with most of his money and go chase a ring with one of his buddies for the minimum on some other team.

Not interested. Maybe if they had the same salary
