Chandler Hutchison 6-7 195 SG/SF Boise State

Post#1 » by UNCNYC » Wed May 30, 2018 4:07 pm

He is who I want us to draft this year. I think we should try and move back slightly to like 15 and take him.

I love this guy. Led BSU in scoring, rebounding, assists, and steals. Believe he was the only player in the country to do so. He had a 40 point game, a triple double, and a buzzer beater this year. Still improving. Very athletic. I’ve seen about 12 BSU games and came away impressed every time. I’ve heard he has a promise in the first round from somebody. If we trade down, I would take him for sure.

Not really liking the fit. We don't need another SG unless we trade Lamb, Monk, or Batum. He doesn't really have the size to guard a lot of taller wings either.

Guy is 6’7’’ and athletic. There are reasons to not want to draft him but that seems like it was pulled out of a hat. Sometimes I question if half of the people on this board watch any tape.

So, he is going to be able to guard Giannis or Durant?

that's a crap barometer because how many people in the league, ever, could? jesus

Yeah, we have an undersized 2 in Monk and now we'll draft an undersized 3. If you think for a second Durant or Giannis aren't going to be one of the top 2 3s, then you are sorely mistaken. I guess if you want to construct a team to go out in the 1st round of the playoffs, yeah draft another 4* year college player with limited upside.

*edit: Frank was a 3 year college player with limited upside

I never thought of 6’7 being overly small for small forward. Anyhow, here’s a good write up.

Wingspan of top SFs in the league

Leonard 7' 3''
Giannis 7' 3''
Durant 7' 4.75''
Gay 7' 3''
Covington 7' 1.75''

and..

Hutchison 7' 1" + Standing Reach is N/A? Doesn't look great tho
Adam Morrison 6' 10''

In other words, this guy better be able to shoot the paint off the barn because he's too small in weight and wingspan to see any significant minutes in meaningful action; and that's after 4 years in college.

you're missing my point

there are no single defenders in the league that can consistently guard the upper echelon offensive players. when people say defense for most of these guys, they mean being able to hold their own against the majority of the league and not be a liability. if you're talking about the lebrons and kds and gianniss etc - they're only slowed or forced to work hard against great defenders and even greater team defenses

there's no way in hell a college kid should ever be expected to hang out in front of any top 5 player at their position lol... saying a guy can't guard KD is ridiculously unfair. can he help a team and not be a liability? that's all that's expected of any rookie.

and this wingspan stuff is absurd too. long arms don't mean you can move your feet lol

Seems pretty competitively sized. Again I Dont want him at 11 but that’s a reach especially when Covington just made all defense team with same wingspan guarding those players.

Keep attacking everything I say instead of convincing me why this guy is worth it. Obviously, he has some positive characteristics, but there's a reason he's not going to be drafted until 20+. And, yes Covington is a top SF and Gay is not bad either(just played for bad team). Covington was actually #1 SF in RPM this past season.

Sorry, was just shook that Gay was referred to as a top SF. Seems like you should have expected a call out on a list of top SFs that includes Gay but not LeBron, Middleton, Butler, PG, Hayward, etc.

I don't know anything about this dude.

He's good enough to be a starter in this league for 10 seasons. I'd take him over the terrible SFs we've rolled out since drafting Morrison.

Pretty loose definition of "top" then.

Am I really going to have to convince you that Rudy Gay is miles ahead of any SF we've used in the past 10 years?

I would take him if Miles is off the board. I think Miles has upside but I don't think he will end up that much better than a Michael Beasley. I think MPJ might end up being either injury prone or have an ego. (Just my opinion) And with Mikal I actually think he reminds me of and compares some to Marvin williams. I would choose Hutchinson if Miles is off the board. I like Hutchinson over Walker because he is slightly a little bigger all else seemingly equal between the two.

I don't see why that's relevant. You were making a point about relative measurable of top SFs in a draft discussion. I'm honestly just curious why Gay came to your mind, especially considering the guys you left off.

It really wasn't a well thought out list. I looked at draft measurements of various SFs over the past years and picked out these guys who found success in the NBA. There are obviously some SFs I left out that are better than Gay. Paul George and Gordon Hayward are both better SFs and have small wingspans, but there ability to score in multiple ways trumps what most opposition is capable of.

Why this matters when discussing Hutchsion is because he has been in school for 4 years and his upside is minimized. His body is not going to grow very much more and that is a problem. He is a small lanky 3 who can play an oversized 2. So, are we going to have Monk keep running the point and we can fit him in at the 2?
