3 Coaching Finalists Poll
Yes, the hiring process sucks. The future GM has already been cuckolded before even being identified.
However, we seem to have three finalists for the coaching position. Of course it will come down to both our interest and their interest, but what are your preferences?
*This thread isn't meant to step on the toes of the coaching search thread. Try to keep most in-depth comments on the search there. This just needs enough comments to keep it floating near the top to get some good poll results.

Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

Re: 3 Coaching Finalists Poll
For the record, I voted 1. Casey 2. Beilein 3. Udoka.
Casey and Beilein are pretty much neck and neck for me. Beilein has shown creativity and works well with young players. However, he'll get to age 70 in nearly half the time as Casey and also college success doesn't always translate to the NBA. As for Casey, he has a long track record of getting more out of his teams than he realistically should. Also, as I've mentioned before, he has a track record of putting young guys in roles where they can succeed (VanVleet, Powell, Siakham, etc.).
I have nothing against Udoka, I just don't know much about him. Someone isn't a great coach just because he's been in the room with Pop. Look at Jacque Vaughn. Look at PJ Carleisimo. Given I don't know anything about Udoka and there are two candidates that bring a lot of positives to the table, he's the odd man out for me.

I went with Udoka/Beilein/Casey but I would be ok with any of the three tbh.

Re: 3 Coaching Finalists Poll
As a diehard Spartan, the first choice should be Beilein. First off, he is a great coach who develops EXACTLY what our players are lacking, which is fundamentals. Passing, shooting, defensive position. Truthfully our young players will have a ton to gain from him. I also do think his offense translates well to the NBA. A teacher and developer is good when you suck, don't have draft picks or cap space, and have young players. Our only way of improving is largely internal development. Lets pick someone who is good at that.
Udoka seems like the second choice to me. Good system and tutelage, but truthfully I don't know enough. Maybe we can get him on a long term deal like Brad Stevens and strike gold.
Casey seems like a treadmill coach to me. Will hopefully get us into the playoffs and then out in the first round, since we don't have the talent to go further.

Re: 3 Coaching Finalists Poll
i went 1. Beilein 2. Udoka 3. Casey, but I wouldn't be upset with any of them. It would be nice to have someone with actual michigan ties and high levels of success. Udoka is basically an unknown, but obviously is thought highly of by people behind the scenes.
I think Casey is getting a bad rap. He's not one of those coaches anyone is going to look back on and say he revolutionized the game, but his teams play hard and his teams play defense. He also hasn't been running his "stars" into the ground and has gotten a ton of production from role players and bench guys.

Agreed. I’d be pleased with any of these 3, especially considering some of the other names that were tossed around in the news.

Re: 3 Coaching Finalists Poll
Why anyone would desire Casey as a coach is beyond me. He's a terrible in-game tactician, just like Stan is. When LeBron hit the Raps, he just reverted back to his terrible iso heavy offense that has NEVER worked against good teams. He will bring that same rigid, stubborn approach here. It will be like Stan never left. Boring, predictable offense and a coach constantly harping about defense, even though the Pistons will be a bad defensive team simply due to the roster makeup.

I put Belein third. Rather see him win at Michigan than suffer with this garbage roster.
They can hire him three years from now when Detroit has some roster flexibility

Re: 3 Coaching Finalists Poll
Udoka, Beilein, Casey. If Beilein were ten years younger, he'd be #1 for me. I don't know a ton about him, but he seems to know what he's about. Udoka trained under the best coach in NBA history. He's young and has lots of potential, and it's worth taking a chance on him.
Casey is a known quantity. He's known not to be terrible, but he's also known to have marked flaws and a relatively low ceiling (I thought he should've been fired back in 2015, when it was plain that he'd reached the limits of his abilities). And no, he did not get fired for failing to beat LeBron. He got fired for his flaws as a coach, and for getting DESTROYED by LeBron for the third straight season. Consider that whereas it took the Cavaliers seven games to beat both the Pacers and Celtics, they annihilated the Raptors in four; and Casey did not at all coach well. Not by a long shot.

I'm a Wolverine and love Belein, but I think I'd rather have him stay at Michigan
I'm also not too impressed with college coaches coming to the pros, they haven't had much success unless you're Brad Stevens. Maybe Belein is the type of coach that could succeed? He certainly could coach fundamentals and I think his offense would translate well in the NBA. Maybe I should have put him first.

Re: 3 Coaching Finalists Poll
Are we even sure our coach will be one of those 3?
Honestly? My last choice is the Michigan guy. A guy with a long successful career at the college level often doesn’t translate to the pros, and it strikes me as a move designed to excite fans than made for purely basketball reasons.
I went Udoka, Casey, Beilein. Though I’m sure that’s not a popular sentiment.
I guess I’d rather role the dice on an unknown who’s worked within a highly successful culture than go with guys who have known resumes who I believe will fall short. I see no downside to the riskier choice.

Re: 3 Coaching Finalists Poll
1. Udoka - high risk/high reward
2. Beilein - medium risk/high reward
3. Casey - low risk/medium reward
to me Udoka is the most exciting candidate. learned from Pop, calm demeanor, respected by great players, only 40 years old - can better connect with the players.
I like Belein a lot but his age makes me think he won't be around long.
Please no to Casey.

Don't worry, no coach is going to be around long. 2/3 of nba coaches have only been with their team from 2015 or later. Only 3 coaches have continuous employment dating before 2012.

He'll be 68. Beilien is looking to get paid and retire. He's probably got 5 years left in him. That's why I want him even though I love Michigan. He doesn't have much time left.

Their little tactic of bringing in Jason Kidd for an interview really worked on adjusting my perspective on this. Now I'm firmly in the "anyone but Kidd" camp.

Re: 3 Coaching Finalists Poll
I voted for Casey. Fact is he did some very good things in the regular season with the Raptors and would do the same for Detroit. Gores wants to make the playoffs, and as stupid as I think the direction is, Casey gets it done.
If they were blowing it up I would vote for the Udoka.
I don’t think a 65 year old college coach makes much sense.

i have to believe that medium risk/high reward is better than high risk/high reward, no? why would you have udoka ahead of beilein if that's the case?

Udoka isn't high risk or even a risk.
Phil Jackson taking over the Bulls in 1989 is high risk.
Not picking Udoka is a cover your ass move.
A true culture reset is not a cover your ass move.
