This is about Lebron's legacy. He comes to Houston he's still got a shot at catching/passing Jordan in titles in his career.
That's what it's all about baby. If he wants to become a billionaire, a global icon, Houston is the place to do it. They've already got the rabid international fanbase. Now they just need a Super Team to bring it home.
Lebron ain't trying to star in the movie Shazam. He's trying to sell shoes in Mongolia and Hungary. He needs the titles. Once he knocks off this Golden State team, they might stop selling Jordan shoes...
I'm an international fan myself, and where does this notion of Hou being an international team come from?
Lebron will be a billionaire regardless of whether he goes to Hou or SAC, he's already a global icon, and any place that doesn't already know who Lebron is, isn't going to suddenly take notice of him if he goes to hou - he's already bigger than the team itself!
If he goes to Hou, then imo he instantly forgoes any illusions of taking over GOAT status. Joining with a top 5 pg of all time, and the current MVP is not something someone at his level should view as an acceptable leg up.
Houston. We are China. The Red Rockets. Thats why we wear Chinese red jerseys. That's why everything we do is based around growing our Chinese appeal. Lebron is the final frontier.
Lebron was not already a global icon in China. It was Kobe. And Jeremy Lin. Now it will be Lebron. Lebron is coming to Houston for the oil money.
Les sold the team because he knew he was going to have to extend a LOT of capital in the early years of Lebron coming. It's going to be a freaking expensive team to maintain. But it takes money to make money. Between the oil and China it's coming. Houston.
Say it. Red Rocket.

They'd probably have to gut the team -- like give up Ariza and Capela, and use future picks to send out Anderson, and more -- and then sign Lebron, and then sign Paul using his Bird Rights.
It's theoretically possible, but they wouldn't be adding Lebron to the same team, just to Harden and CP3.
Not that that's a bad thing at all, but anyone who thinks they can just sign Lebron without sacrificing much don't understand how the CBA works.
Not all teams get a $25 million spike in the cap at the perfect time to add another superstar in free agency
Nobody is touching Anderson's contract without shipping out an equally bad contract. I don't care how many late 1st round picks you attach to it.The guy cannot be on the court against good teams in the playoffs and he's making like $35M over the next two seasons.
If Paul takes a big deal, wave bye-bye to any hope of Lebron joining. Unless Lebron goes on a rage and signs for the MLE or something just to want to have the best shot to beat the Warriors. That'd be something
C'mon man Ryno is getting Stretch Armstrong'd. Morey tweeted that already on his burner account
Haha... they should, but then again it only saves them $5M/yr. That might be enough to buy you a used LMRAM but not a new Lebron.

It might be if we get him involved with the right oil limited partnerships. We might even do enough under the table deals that he doesn't get a K-1 to file.
Look, if there was no salary cap some team would pay Lebron $100m/annually like the soccer players get. You can't be naive enough to think his reported salary is all he's being paid by teams recruiting him. He increases franchise's market value by an obscene amount of money. This isn't Gordon Hayward or Jusuf Nurkic we are talking about here.
Lebron is going to go to the highest bidder and that isn't going to be based solely on 'legal' salary cap space. He's worth way more than a max contract to some team. Lebron isn't a businessman, he's a business, man.

Re: CP3/Rockets Negotiations
Were the Clippers really going to offer him the max? Or was it assumed he would get it?
Where else is he going to go? Maybe Philly?
He should be entering the Discount Duncan Dirk portion of his career now if he wants to stay on a contender because he can't carry a team there himself.

How many teams didn't have a 25 million spike in cap room at that perfect time to sign a superstar?
I'm assuming all the teams that weren't in the position to sign a superstar due to their current roster situation. Likely teams who had their own star resigning under the new cap and wouldn't have enough space.
The timing of the spike was not perfect for every team. The "perfect" timing is if you already have an established team with stars signed to contracts under the old lower salary cap.

They were, Ballmer said the were well aware of all the statistics of players dropping off after a certain age and knew how much they would be paying in the final seasons, but saw it as a good gamble still. Clippers would have been giving him a contract that ends a year earlier than Houston will be though if Houston gives 5 years. I'm assuming the years will drop, but I don't know..

There's no way he's getting that contract from Morey. If CP3 wants his money he'll have to find an S&T somewhere.

I'd offer him 4 years, $160 million. Why bid against themselves? Literally nobody can offer him more money or a better winning situation. Plus no state income tax in Texas. He's going to what, turn that down to make less money on a worse team out of spite?
Yes, he will, if the team straight up lied to him.
It seems very, very likely the team had an understanding with him when he played for less this past season so he could join them without them blowing up the roster, that he would get his payday the next season, when the team had Bird Rights to sign him over the cap.
If that was all a smokescreen and they reneg now, you can bet his representation won't be shy about putting the team on blast about it among league circles, and that Paul wouldn't be too happy about it either.
There's always joining Lebron in LA, anyway, and as far as fallback plans go, that's a pretty good one.
They'd still be doing all that though. Using his bird rights and going over the cap. But they have to be smart.

Re: CP3/Rockets Negotiations
Whatever Houston does it will not be what anyone expects, nor what any "expert" claims to know.
There will be a lot of people asking "how did they do that?" or "why didn't they do that?"
Don't put a lot of stock into rumors about the front office workings of the Rockets. They are hardly ever even close to right.

Re: CP3/Rockets Negotiations
I guess the good news is I think he will age better than most because his game is more well rounded and doesn’t rely on athleticism.
These super max contracts are crazy though. I grew up in the age when 29 million was a lot for a player. Happy the league has grown to what it is, but that’s a lot of monetary to tie up.

They can but the luxury tax would be unsustainable, they'd lose incredible amounts per year (a lot more than even the Cavs I think).
