RIP, Red Schoendienst

Red Schoendienst died yesterday at 95.

For those too young to remember the Milwaukee Braves, Schoendienst was an important contributor to Milwaukee baseball's only championship season.

He led the N.L. in hits in the 1957 season with 200, helping propel the Braves to a World Series victory over the Yankees.
“A lot of people credited that trade with being the difference that helped them win it,” Joe Torre told The Kansas City Star in 1993, when Torre was managing the Cardinals and Schoendienst was his bench coach. “He was a sparkplug kind of guy, a leader.”

When Schoendienst contracted TB it was front-page news (not just sports-page news). He'll be remembered as a Cardinal, but if you were a Milwaukee baseball fan in the 1950s, you mourn a little for him as well.

Schoendienst is a Hall of Famer so heard of him before but always associated him as a Cardinal and a guy that was noted as a questionable Hall of Famer. Never realized that he was part of that 1957 Braves team. Hasn't exactly been a lot of championships in Milwaukee so I'm glad I finally realized he was one of the players that brought a championship here.

Yeah. For me, I knew the Braves as the team that brought Milwaukee a Championship banner. And, really, I knew Ed Mathews; Warren Spahn; and Hank Aaron because I tended to my dad's childhood baseball collection. He had 6 Carl Yastrzemski rookie cards. He also had 4 Hank Aaron reverse jersey cards (in addition to Mantles up the wazoooo). In the late 80's/early 90's I neatly packed and protected his entire collection. My stewardship paid for my parents' move from Milwaukee to Connecticut and paid for the repaving of their driveway and the repainting of their house in 2013. I was a good kid some times.
