For those too young to remember the Milwaukee Braves, Schoendienst was an important contributor to Milwaukee baseball's only championship season.
He led the N.L. in hits in the 1957 season with 200, helping propel the Braves to a World Series victory over the Yankees.
βA lot of people credited that trade with being the difference that helped them win it,β Joe Torre told The Kansas City Star in 1993, when Torre was managing the Cardinals and Schoendienst was his bench coach. βHe was a sparkplug kind of guy, a leader.β
When Schoendienst contracted TB it was front-page news (not just sports-page news). He'll be remembered as a Cardinal, but if you were a Milwaukee baseball fan in the 1950s, you mourn a little for him as well.
Rest in peace.
