Unlike Hill he never complained about his time here and was really professional the entire season. Hopefully the younger guys learned something from his approach. You can be mad all you want about our front office and signing Zbo but i don't see how you can rip him. The kings should have known what they were getting. If the organization had acquired more talent we wouldn't have had to ask a 36 year old to be the focal point of our offense.

Personally, I like him as a player. As you mentioned, what I don't like is his role as a primary focus on offense with lots of iso plays. At that point his best role would be a solid contributor as an instant scoring option from the bench for 10-15 minutes. I think most of us thinking the same way here, rather than ripping him because he didn't give it all.

On the other hand, I disagree with your opinions of Hill. He was looking interested, positive and very supportive here, at least during game time :roll:. He was just a bad fit and wanted to be somewhere else at that point of his career. Just checked, he's still being followed by every single Kings player on instagram. We're in 2018 and it says to me that he's not a quitter or unprofessional at all :lol: .

I disagree. Was signed 20 mil to be a leading scorer, but turned into a passive nothing on the floor. Possibly released into that Vlade/FO unprofessionally “promised to be competing for playoffs” to get out. Made questionable comments post trade about the same theme which SactownRoyalty had a good article on. And the only resonance of him here on paper is Iman Shumperts bad contract

He was a dope IMO, and I’m thinking that’s the majority view. He may not have been a bad locker room presence in person though

Couldn't disagree more. He refused to even jump for a rebound. We complain about Demarcus Cousins transition defense, Zach was one of the all time worst at this.

This was 100% an effort thing. He would give it his all on offense when he got the ball in the post, but when it came to defense and rebounding he wouldn't even try. sad to watch.

The numbers indicated that Zbos presence was hardly positive on the floor. I do think he can help a playoff team as a quick scoring punch type so hopefully that happens before the season begins.

Anyone thinking Hill could be just any teams leading scorer is problem number 1, then it's just downhill from there. He had a solid, yet brief run as a main cog in Utah. Overall he's more comfortable in that 3rd option role and he's had a nice career being that. Signing Hill to that contract probably never made sense for any team, but least of all the Kings. If Cuz were still there I'd have been Ok with it, but not after drafting a PG at 5 if it meant that number 5 pick got squashed, which is exactly what happened.

But could Zach randolph ever “jump”? He didnt play differently than he had played with any of his former teams. Only difference..there was less talent around him so his flaws were more pronounced.

Totally different than Hill. I thought i remember Hill having quite a few games that he missed for “personal reasons”. I may remember wrong but i think one was a death in the family, another was the birth of a kid which is obviously understandable but i thought there were others that we never heard a reason for.

Realistically we don’t need to get rid of Randolph at all. Just limit his role this year which I think was part of the package. Play a significant on court education role for the young guys year 1, reduce the on court stuff year 2, but increase the education/coaching of the young guys and we will pay you handsomely for that.
If anyone thinks it’s a good idea to stretch anyone on this roster has to be out of their mind, we literally have 0 bad contracts. This is a different stretch for the NBA and Sacramento is in position number 1 salary wise. Name a team that is in a better position salary wise.
The amount of calls the FO is going to get regarding these expiring contracts is insane. There isn’t 1 team out there that isn’t looking to save money and we have 4 golden tickets.

If your goal with the cap space is to use it to absorb bad contracts in exchange for draft picks, then yes, stretching any of our players makes little sense.

If your goal with cap space is to spend it on FAs in a year where we might actually have a chance at signing a key contributor, then stretching a player makes perfect sense.

Both approaches have merit, I'm just hoping for a free agent splash since we don't have our draft pick next summer.

Look at the landscape of the NBA currently and almost everyone is in savings mode. That means maximising the cap with assets you have, not wasting it on ones you don’t. Teams are starting to figure this out. The only times you stretch someone is if you’re going to sign someone that puts you into contention, not for the playoffs, but title contention. Or secondly if you are trying to get out of or avoid luxury tax. The Kings are nowhere near either or these.

Dream scenario draft + free agency combos for the kings IMO...

AYTON + GERALD GREEN (good shooter for ayton to feed from the post..could use smallball lineup of Ayton/Green/Bogi/Buddy/Fox)

DONCIC + AARON GORDON (3 athletes in gordon, wcs, fox to catch passes from luka/bogi)

BAGLEY + AARON GORDON (Gordon can make up for Bagley's defensive deficiencies..huge scoring increase with these 2)

PORTER + CLINT CAPELA (defense & offense both addressed)

BAMBA + JULIUS RANDLE (elite defense + scoring/offensive initiator)

With the odds seemingly going up that the Kings will draft Doncic, and given the fact that the Kings can be players in the free agent market, I decided to look at potential FA target big men and their statistical performance as a P&R Roll man. Some potential targets are looking better (Harrell, Len), others are looking much worse (Nurkic).

Below are some simple stats on points scored per possession as a roll man out of the pick & roll, as well as the player's overall percentile as a roll man scorer:

Montrezl Harrell - Scores 1.4 PPP (95th Percentile) - He'd be a smart, lower cost FA target. He lacks "star power", but he could be a great team addition.

Clint Capela - 1.34 PPP (91st Percentile) - It would take near or full max money, but he's young (just turned 24) and plays to his strengths. He's the sort of big that works well with Doncic.

Aaron Gordon - 1.25 PPP (82nd Percentile) - He was involved as the roll man fewer times than others on this list, but he still performs well. I'd love to see him and Doncic as our Forward pairing. He's also improving as a 3pt shooter.

Alex Len - 1.22 PPP (77th Percentile) - Another potentially smart "buy low" option at C. He is pretty darn quick and mobile as a 7 footer. He could be worth a look if the Kings strike out on higher-profile players.

Jabari Parker - 1.2 PPP (72nd Percentile) - This is a good number on few attempts (0.6 per game).

Julius Randle - 1.16 PPP (68th Percentile) - Still more efficient than any of the Kings' current bigs, and he brings a lot of other skills to the table. I continue to like Randle as a FA target.

Jusuf Nurkic - 1 PPP (38th Percentile) - I'm not loving the idea of spending big money on Nurkic.

And, FWIW...
Kosta = 1.04 PPP (41st Percentile)
WCS = 0.97 PPP (27th Percentile)
Skal = 0.92 PPP (20th Percentile)
ZBo = .090 PPP (18th Percentile)

I sill have Julius Randle as my top FA target (due to availability and versatility) followed by Aaron Gordon. Jabari is growing on me as a scorer if Doncic is the pick.

If the Kings draft Doncic my stance on Nurkic changes somewhat. The Kings could use a solid post player and screen setter like him since the Kings would essentially be able to run pick and roll from as many as four positions on the floor much like the Warriors. For the KIngs getting guards open is more important than a big man that can dunk off every pick and roll.

Harrell is still the guy I like and I'd throw in Deandre Jordan if he opts out. He's one of the best screen setters in the league if not the best. The thing about Harrell is teams still haven't discovered his potential as a switch defender. He was really good at that in college.

I’m actually thinking Harrell if we draft Doncic.
It’s a good point with Nurkic though.
Harrell IMO would be that lower cost big that does almost everything the other star players we are supposedly targeting.

If the Kings end up taking anyone other than Doncic at #2 (it would be a big man), do you think the Kings target Hezonja in free agency and call it a day? While I would not love the lack of aggression with available players and few competitors with significant cap space, at least the Kings would have significant financial flexibility going forward.

All in on Doncic/Harrell.

I don't want to buy out Randolph, I just want him to transition more so to a bench warmer/coach.

Zach is the King of the low post move. Having him work with our young bigs like Giles and if we draft him Bagley is priceless.

Return to Sacramento Kings
