The Grizzlies probably want someone to take on that Chandler Parsons contract.

Would anyone do Tobias, #12, filler for #4 and Parsons?

Doubt they move Tobias and take back Parsons. More likely scenario is DJ and a pick to the Mavs, if he opts in.

Problem is the Mavs don't have to move down to get DJ, they have the capspace to just get him in free agency and keep Docic for themselves in that scenario.

Honestly, I'd love to get Doncic, but I don't see a way it can be done. I don't think he's falling from #2, and even if he did, we'd have to move everything we got of value (picks, Tobias, Bev) to jump to that range, eat bad contracts and all of that. And even then, I can see Dallas/Memphis or other teams in that range just saying not worth it.

Which is ok, cause I kinda want to add two prospects and have some assets to maneuver, rather than adding a guy with a chance to become a franchise player, but nothing to put around him for a couple years.

I dont think we can get Doncic either, but the Mavs move is the only thing that makes sense to me. We eat Wes Matthews contract, we get the 5th pick, Dallas gets DJ at $24 mil and preserves cap space, plus picking up at least one later lottery pick.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

Thanks for all the draft info Ranma and mkwest. I absolutely do not have time like I used to for checking all this stuff, so it is nice to have a lot of stuff compiled in one place for me to check out whenever I can.

Hot Stove Has the Clippers Cooking Something Up (UPDATED)

Post#707 » by Ranma » Tue Jun 12, 2018 4:50 pm

I'm quite excited that the Clippers are looking into moving up in the draft, especially with Jerry West involved, obviously. While I'm all for paying the high price of both the 12 & 13th overall picks in addition to Tobias Harris for Luka Doncic, I think that's a high price to pay for Michael Porter, Jr.

I get that MPJ is a "swing for the fences" type pick since I've stated as much previously as well as advocated selecting him as part of my "Column A and Column B" wish list but I was never entirely sold on him even before the back injury. He's certainly a natural shooter with athleticism and quickness pre-injury but he's always been inefficient and kind of a black hole as an offensive option. While he's shown to be competitive, his brother, Jontay, actually has better feel for the game and he withdrew from this year's draft class. The injury factor lowers his stock further.

I don't care how great he supposedly performed in controlled workouts, because prospects are supposed to excel in such events handled by their representation whether it's an agent or their school. Darko Milicic and Michael Olowokandi were phenomenal one-on-none exhibitions under controlled conditions. I'm not saying workouts don't matter as I've actually pointed out those by Anfernee Hardaway and Kobe Bryant during their respective draft years as being legendary eye-openers for personnel evaluators, but we have to look at them in context with their overall body of work. How will Porter, Jr.'s body react once it starts meeting resistance and experiencing high-impact contact against competition on a nightly basis? Will he be open to changing his game a bit to be more efficient and to involve his teammates more?

Tobias Harris may be an expiring contract, but he's still a valuable commodity whom we would be interested in signing to a long-term deal at a reasonable price. Getting a possible generational talent in Doncic locked in on a rookie-scale contract would be invaluable and worth the premium price. On the other hand, Porter, Jr. arguably isn't even worth the 2 low lottery picks we currently have in our possession.

I'm not even saying I'm entirely sold on Doncic yet either, but I intially projected him to be similar to Gordon Heyward. However, given the general consensus opinion on him and the assumption that Jerry West signs off on him as a believer in his talent and makeup, I've certainly been open to consider revising my opinion with more research, which I need more time to engage in more depth.

Kevin O' Connor, TheRinger.com (6/11/18)
The offseason hot stove is already burning up just three days after the Warriors’ win. The Kings and Mavericks are open to moving down in the draft, according to multiple league front-office executives. Sacramento is in the asset-stacking business, while Dallas is trying to compete for the playoffs next season. The Clippers, who have thre no. 12 and no. 13 picks, are one team pushing to move up, as I previously reported, and have interest in both Luka Doncic and Michael Porter Jr. The Bucks are one team to monitor, as they’ll use their no. 17 pick to bolster the roster around Giannis Antetokounmpo. League sources are split on what the Cavaliers will do with the no. 8 pick.

The Warriors Upped the Stakes This Offseason

Smith has worked out for or drawn interest from teams in the 9-16 range so far.

He has no fire, no motor, doesn't rebound nor play defense. That doesn't translate into a 90's player. He wasted a complete reboot to his career when he went to Brooklyn and got exposed

Well ... his production was legit fairly terrible at Miami. He looks great in workouts and is a delight in interviews though. I'm actually fairly high on him as a Jaylen Brown type situation where the college productivity may not reflect what he'll be in the NBA. However I wouldn't mind a team before the Clips picking him and making another prospect available.

Their conclusion at their end rings true, IMO. The model is better at picking out high end talent. Disagree with a lot of their projections and percentages. Mainly, because a factor in the algorithm is HS and AAU stats. They are good for a brief framework, but hold little weight to me when scouting.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.
