I'm also of the opinion that he's our best option for the MLE. And I think we might be the right fit for him too. Even if other teams are offering the same money, I say we offer him a 1 year deal with a player option for a 2nd. And our pitch is that he gets a year to bet on himself. Promise him a starting spot so he can audition for a big payday next summer but he has the option for next year so he doesn't end up leaving money on the table if it turns out that he's a scrub.

Re: Mario Hezonja
I like Hezonja when he was a draft prospect. Confidence isn't an issue for him and he's the type of european that given the chance can randomly kill it like Ginobli. I think he's got the athleticism, shooting touch, and confidence to be a sharp shooter for us. If we can sign and trade for him though it would be even better for us. Give up Galloway or Leuer to Orlando if they want them idk orlando is known to give up talent for nothing.

Re: Mario Hezonja
Isn't he all but locked to Sacto or did the lottery muck that up?
It's hard t predict any FA moves with a new regime in here. Hell, we probably don't even use the MLE because of the tax threshold. Tolly is certainly gone, with Griffin, Leuer, Ellenson on the roster, as well as Dre and Moreland at Ce. Five bigs is enough in the new NBA. So that is money we'd have almost certainly spend on Tolliver we could spend elsewhere.
I don't think we go out handing full MLE money and years to anybody given our cap situation. I'd bet we use the Boban TE instead, adding 7M to our cap, but on a shorter length.

Re: Mario Hezonja
I’m would love to add Mario but I think he will get more than we can offer. Adding Mario would add significant interest on my part (yes I realise how sad that sounds).
Even if he would sign with us for the full MLE, wouldn’t we struggle to resign him once the contract expires? I know we are capped out but can someone with a greater understanding of the cap fill me in?

Re: Mario Hezonja
could we get creative and sign him to a 2 year deal MLE with a player option year 2? Let him know we see him being our starting SF.

I’m not even sure we can offer the MLE without hitting the LT.

If we sign him to a 2 year deal or longer then Reggie, Leuer, and Galloway will be expired by the time we need to resign him.
We’d still have Griffin and Dre taking up a massive swath of cap space but it would be doable in theory.

Re: Mario Hezonja
He feels like the type of guy Golden State will pick up with their MLE and make everyone more mad when they add a "free" 23 year old wing who can shoot.

Yeah it’s probably a moot point. Even if the MLE is the price he’ll probably have other options at that price.

I wouldn't touch him - he stunk all the way up until halfway through last season, when he realized, "Hey, I don't have a contract next year, time to focus!" He'll be stealing money from whatever team he signs with......

Re: Mario Hezonja
Teams above the luxury tax have a smaller MLE. We can outbid teams like the Warriors. He'll definitely have options but the Pistons are as good a landing spot as any when it comes to getting starter minutes a team that isn't tanking

I think keeping AT is far more important than signing an MLE guy, and I don't think it's possible to do both, but maybe I'm wrong.
To me, you re-sign AT and look for a young guy who can play the 2/3 in the draft and roll with him as our 4th wing behind Bullock, Luke, and Stanley who should see basically all of the minutes anyways.

He's a career 33% shooter from 3. For comparison, Ish Smith shot 34.7% last year. I just don't think he'd be worth spending money on at this point when Bullock, Luke, and SJ are comparable players overall.
Orlando may be totally inept, but the fact that they were willing to just cut ties with him before his rookie deal was done is not really a good sign for him as a player/person.
Would I prefer to have him over Stanley? Maybe. But I'm at least a little intrigued by how Stanley looks under a new coach for the first time in his career.

Pretty sure luxury tax wouldnt kick in until next July 1st. Not an immediate penalty. Which would give us time to get under it by deadline.

Can we keep Ennis too?
Keep tolly and ship Ellenson off for a 2nd rounder for some minor savings.

Re: Mario Hezonja
As for my opinion on a move like this, it seems like the sort of risk the Pistons should be taking right now, really. We're short on young talent and he could end up being pretty damn good.
Might totally fail, but for the right price I'd love to roll the dice on the guy.
Don't think its gonna happen though.

So little money, so many needs. If we get the chance to get some more Tolliver, I'd like to see that happen.
