Lakers Plan B: take on salary for draft picks

Post#1 » by dockingsched » Thu Jun 14, 2018 12:26 am

Read on Twitter

“I have heard the Lakers are looking to either add a pick either in the middle of the first round, or trade up from the 25th pick into the middle of the first round to draft a player they are targeting-Zhaire Smith is a name I’ve heard they are very high on.

So if that’s true, I’ve also heard that would also mean they have the willingness to add salary this summer, like Ramona Shelburne has reported before they would be willing to add money this summer and then pursue free agents in 2019. Ramona reported that before, and I’ve heard that again this week.”

Very happy to hear about this being the backup plan

This doesn't make sense to me.

I've wondered why the Lakers weren't aggressive doing this in the past. Instead they signed Deng and Mosgov rather than acquire picks in exchange for taking on expirings. I don't expect Randle to be on the team next season.

I mean they did to it in 2016 getting two 2nds for taking Jose Calderon and got a 1st in 2015 for taking Jeremy Lin.

Faried + #14 for #25

Bayless + #26 for cap to sign LBJ outright

Leonard + #22 for cap - this one im not too eager to do as i'd want another FRP

Mahinmi + #15 for cap - this one is basically worse case scenario if we dont sign EITHER LBJ or PG13

Gordon or Tucker + #30 for cap to help facilitate LBJ to HOU

Be involved in 3way deals whoring out cap space for spare assets

I cant really think of any more teams in dire need of cap services. Honestly we're the biggest player, in trying to dump Deng.

good plan B

take on Faried for 14 (and then take Zhaire Smith or Kevin Knox, or look to move up and get MPJ/Bamba/Mikal Bridges)

Bayless + 26 I'd go for also if we need another first (if we need it to take someone like Bates Diop).

What’s Faried’s cap hit? can we stretch or waive him after acquiring?
Who do we give up? Maybe S&T Randle to Nuggets.
Then use their pick to trade Deng maybe.
So many options for a change.

This is interesting. Don't know about Faried's salary but I'll consider this especially if we aren't planning on giving Randle big money.

Like you mentioned in another thread, the timing of FA make things a bit tricky. By taking on salary prior to FA we would effectively take ourselves out of the Lebron sweepstakes. We would have to know by draft night Lebron is definitely not coming here.

I trust our scouting department, but I don't trust the report that we're high on Zhaire Smith. He measured just under 6 3" at the combine and is projected to play SF.

Could be posturing but apparently Kevin Huerter has a commitment from us for #25. So I'd assume they are targeting a mid 1st by accepting salary. I like this plan a lot more than the LeBron James circus.

Will PG come alone?

Memphis shopping no 4 pick with Parsons' contract. I think it would be a pretty good deal for us.

This does not bode well for our chances to offload Deng. If they cannot get rid of Parsons with 4th pick...we're screwed.

The Grizzlies want something back though. The Lakers would just be trying to get someone to take Deng while paying the taker 1st round picks or attaching a young player.

Would you guys renounce the cap for the next 2 FA window for the #4? What would you give up for this package (#4 and Parsons)? I dont think pre cap space will close the deal.

I would be OK if Doncic is there and we can keep Ball/Ingram/Kuz, but is hard to focus on it with all the talk about Lebron and George.

Ohhh This is good. I'd rather we do this than Lebron to be honest.

Doubt Kuzma + our 1st rounder would get us that. We'd have to offer Lonzo most likely which is too much to give at that point. Lottery picks are ridiculously overvalued. Too many GMs are scared of missing on a future star. They don't want to be that guy.

i think if the lakers truly want zhaire smith, this is the only way to do it, outside of trading lonzo with deng

I'd do Faried as a plan B if we get a pick. Would def have to be a plan B.

Parons has two years left. That closes our big $$ window. By the time he comes off the books, we will have to start resigning guys, and won't have that space.

My two cents worth: When I look at this team (Lonzo, Ingram, Kuz, Randle, Hart, Zubac) I don't see a team that will compete with the Warriors. Not now...not ever. This team needs a couple legit max players. We have this year and next to bring in a couple max-type guys. After that, we gotta start shelling out. There is an outside possibility: we wait 2 offseasons, and when Deng comes off, we dont resign Ingram. Anyone happy with that scenario??

If not...then we can only take on 1-year deals this offseason.

I think the smart play is to go for FA's this offseason. If we fall short....maybe we look at other ideas. But no 2-year contracts. Will totally screw us.
