I wonder if Stafanski isn't a NBA league office "fixer" and that the league nudged Gores into hiring him on. He seems to land in a lot of spots where the front office was "questionable" over the years and then move on after a relatively short stint onto the next FO mess.
off the top of my head I can't think of any specific instances, but I'm sure Tellem had some semblance of a relationship with Stefanski due to Arn being a player agent for many years and Ed being a GM for several of those same years. So at the very least, I'm sure they had conversations in the past.
Stefanski hasn't actually held a GM title or been in charge since 2011. I think the reason he doesn't stay anywhere too long is because it doesn't take long for teams to realize he isn't all that good at his job.
In my opinion, Stefanski's main attribute he brings to the table is he is well connected around the league and been with a handful of organizations. The use for that angle only lasts for so long, so if he doesn't seem to provide much else there isn't much of a reason for a team to have him around for too long.
