No matter how you feel about who we pick Thursday, let's support and welcome him into the family with open arms and minds. Give the kid a fair shot and don't bury him before he's had a chance to show what he can do.
Many of us will be disappointed, but don't let your own scouting via YouTube get in the way of supporting our new man for a season.
As Bulls fans, we're fickle (Chicago fans in general) so I feel the need to remind folks about this.
Thursday can't come soon enough.
I still remember whole Lauri debacle last year. I'll admit I was upset when we drafted him since he didn't project to have a high ceiling and I thought there was better options still available. But after doing some research on him and watching his play during Euro Basketball manage to steer me to like the pick more and give me a fair shot. Glad I ate crow on that one.
Of all of the many posts that I've read, this one got me to thinking more than any other.
The question that came into my head is, "Is there any player in this years draft that will be as good as Lauri as a rookie?"
If so, then will that player be available for the Bulls to draft at #7.
After the Bulls picked Lauri I went back and looked at all of the highlight videos that I could find, and afterward I thought that they had made a good choice because the kid had skills!!!
Now, when I look at this years draft class, there are only three players that I feel have "Skills!!!" and those are Doncic, Young and (surprisingly) Sexton.
To me, the rest of them look raw, and will need 2-3 years before they have a chance of making an impact. And the best of that group are Ayton, Bamba, Bagley and JJJ.
For me, MPJ is a player (based on his health) that will either be a home run or a strike out. And I also have serious questions in my mind about whether or not he can play together with Lauri. But if the Bulls strike out in this draft, it will set them back another 5 years or more, so are Gar/Pax willing to take that risk? To be honest, I don't think so.
So that brings us to the next two player that I think are on the Bulls radar, Mikal and Knox. IMHO both players have a very high ceiling, and both players should fit together well with Lauri. However, there is a wild card sitting out there with the Bulls #22 pick. Because it appears that Gar/Pax have indeed made a "promise" (decision) about who they are going to draft with that pick (including an alternative) because they are not going to trade it, and I believe those two players are Hutchinson and Bates-Diop (if Hutchinson is already picked).
This brings us back to Mikal vs Knox, because I believe that the player that the Bulls want is Bamba. Otherwise, the skill set that Mikal and Knox bring to the table are very similar to what Hutchinson and Bates-Diop bring. The only really outstanding thing that separates the 4 of them is Knox's age, he is the 2nd youngest player in the draft. That means that Gar/Pax can project ahead for the next 6-10 years that he (together with Lauri) would lock down the Bulls PF & SF positions.
Therefore, IMO unless Gar/Pax are able to trade up (i.e. with Memphis) to get Bamba (or he falls into their laps), then they are either going to draft Knox at #7 or try to work a trade down (i.e. with the 76ers or Hornets) that would get them either Knox or Mikal anyway.
