If the New York Knicks want to trade into the top five, it will require the organization to take on an atrocious contract. That may not be what one wants to hear with Joakim Noah already on the roster, but it’s the cost of potentially drafting an All-NBA talent.

Without much to offer, the Knicks’ proposal to the Memphis Grizzlies would have to be centered around a willingness to take back Chandler Parsons.

For those pondering the genesis: Memphis is reportedly open to moving the No. 4 pick if it means clearing Parsons off the books.

Grizzlies fans will argue that this wouldn’t happen without the No. 9 pick, but this is the only acceptable scenario. New York can justify two contractual catastrophes if it has two top-10 draft picks, but not if it walks away with only one.

In this scenario, it would have a core of Kristaps Porzingis, a top-five pick, a top-10 pick, Frank Ntilikina, and Tim Hardaway Jr.—with a 2019 lottery pick potentially on the way.

As for Memphis, this would create immediate flexibility. Parsons is owed $24,107,258 in 2018-19, whereas Lee and Thomas will make a combined $19,373,430—thus providing nearly $5 million in cap relief for the Grizzlies.

Throw in the fact that Thomas has a non-guaranteed salary for 2019-20, and the Grizzlies could be saving as much as $12,342,841 next season while adding players who fit the culture.

Find it hard to believe that's the best cap relief Memphis can get. Then again there aren't a lot of expiring contracts from interested teams.

While keeping Frank as well? That's blasphemous. The # 4 pick is worth more than just a tool to shed salary.

To you and me, yes. What about to an owner who stands to save 49M by dumping Parsons? I agree with the premise though..I would not take Parsons back just to move from 9 to 4. You have 43m tied up in Noah and Parsons for 2 years if you do that and that’s even more blasphemous

Take it for what you will. IF the Knicks could pull this off I'd build Mills/Perry a statue at MSG!

I don’t get the fascination with Mo Bamba especially with KP on our roster. Unless y’all plan on trading KP, bringing in Mo would be idiotic.

Didn’t most of the board agree after KP’s injury he should play the 5 more?

If we can’t get Doncic just get Mikal and keep it pushin’.

Plan A - Get Doncic
Plan B - Get Mikal

Simple.

hell I'd be happy if they can just move up to 4 without giving up Frank or a future 1st. To get 4 and keep 9, I'd sacrifice my first born

The allure of KP and Bamba is simple...7’3 KP and 7’1” Bamba (7’10” wingspan). You’re saying KP is going to be a long 4 a la Durant. I’m very open to the idea it can work.

With an established shot blocker at the rim, KP won't feel the need to help out as much.

He's a decent perimeter defender when he stays home on his man.

P
Just not porter... I don't think we can take a chance on him. I still say Dennis Smith's knees are a ticking time bomb and that I wouldnt be suprised if he roses his career.

I'm really excited to see how this draft plays out. I wasn't paying too much attention last year, but I've followed this one a lot more closely and there are so many ways it could go. Not predictable at all. Should be fun!

i think bamba is versatile enough defensively to guard perimeter 4s and you can switch him and kp 4/5 whenever u need

*sigh*

I don’t care what the potential wingspan combo could be he’s a toothpick, we already went through this with KP.

He’s not a great shooter, his motor is inconsistent, when a body gets on him he turns Bitch and takes bad shots. KP needs to be more than a perimeter shooter, drafting Mo will make him precisely that.
