Who saw that coming?

Could it be a precursor to a trade? Or is he here for the long hawl.

It does make sense for him. He likely wouldn't get a bigger deal on the market.

It does give us some starting center insurance, but I do hope we can ship him off. Either to move up in the draft by taking a worse expiring or move him for taking on a 2 year deal but gain a pick.

I blame the missus.

I'm pretty sure Mrs. Dedmon told Dewayne now was not the time to be unemployed and looking for a new job.

But congrats, tho...

:D

He's one of the few Hawks that I want to keep. He's been a pretty good center for us and, should we nab a big man, he would be nice to help train him.

Dewayne Dedmon’s option timing should raise trade suspicions for the Hawks

Dewayne Dedmon opting in to his contract may point to more things to come on draft day for the Atlanta Hawks.

On wednesday, rumors about the Atlanta Hawks seeking to trade back for Trae Young surfaced. Earlier in the week, the Hawks were alleged to be looking to trade up from the 19th and 30th picks as well. So when immediately before the draft, Dewayne Dedmon announces that he’s exercising his player option to remain with the team, the timing sticks out.

Players whose contracts could end due to an option can’t be traded under the NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement. This rule, as you may recall from last year, required Chris Paul to push back his unrestricted free agency from 2018 to the summer of 2019.

As a result, when Dedmon decided to accept his option, he couldn’t be included in any trades. Now that he has opted in, the Hawks are free to include the capable backup center in any potential offers.

But also, Dedmon acted uncharacteristically early on his option. The actual date that Dedmon had to make a decision by was June 29, and it’s very common — especially for players that intend to opt in to their contracts — to wait until the last second...it’s just that there’s no reason for the player to put the decision in writing before they have to.

...all of the factors we have point toward Dedmon being available for trade in tomorrow’s draft, and it would not be surprising to see him moved.

Dedmon is now a golden trade chip. Too much trade value to keep as a mentor and next season is still a rebuild. I rate him as a 15-20 trade value in this draft.

We also already have Plumlee / Collins getting C minutes and Moose is a likely opt-in. I prefer to trade Dedmon and add another young big to the rotation.

I tend to exagerate. Add say 34 to Dedmon and I think we're talking 15-20. Take on a little bad salary maybe better.

Plumlee would be the one that I’d rather move of course, although his talent keeps you in the lottery.

We want to move up in the draft, not out of it.

Even a 2022 2nd rounder would be nice...

Read on Twitter

Dewayne Dedmon, Hawks

Dedmon is a helpful player on an expiring ($7.2 million ) contract who’s stuck on a bad team – usually a set of factors that lead to a trade. But few good teams need a center, so his market is more limited. Dedmon’s combination of production and salary give him an edge in trade likelihood over other centers on expiring contracts on bad teams: Magic’s Nikola Vucevic, Bulls’ Robin Lopez, Kings’ Kosta Koufos. Atlanta also already has John Collins, Omari Spellman and Alex Len.

The Hawks should want to get what they can for Dedmon then give more playing time to those younger bigs.

After TS' failed attempt at getting anything for Beli and Illy, I won't hold out hope. (I understand why he didn't take back extra salary this year for a 2nd).

Return to Atlanta Hawks
