Will the two new players combine for 500 points next season?
I did this a dozen years ago with Darko...... still makes me smile.
For all of the attributes of these two new players, let’s make the call. Will they combine for 500 total points next season?

Will they combine for 500 minutes is a more realistic question.

What I like is they're both good size guards and there's plenty minutes for the SG position. If we get a role player out of one of them then this draft to me was very successful. Lots of prospects in the first round don't crack the rotation (see Henry example). So if either of these guys can show up it'd be a good addition.

No. Both of these guys won't get significant burn this season. I'd be thrilled if one of them does, and 6 points per game for all 82 games is unrealistic. It'll take time for either of them to work their way into the rotation and when they do that they'll still be getting 15 minutes per game at most.

To be fair, Henry's draft was extremely poor. A guy like Thomas would have probably been a mid-first that year.

Not only was that a really bad draft but IIRC none of the guys "on level" for 17 fit with our current rotation. Ellenson was a bit of a reach for that reason.

As I remember it (and articles from then back it up) Ellenson "fell". There were concerns, now justified, that he would never translate defensively.

But yeah, outside of Brogdon and maybe Dejonte Murray, there's not many names after the lottery that grab you from that draft.

More than his bad play, Ellenson just looks straight up confused out there a lot of the time.
I know he hasn't gotten much burn or a ton of time with the team given his G League stints, but it's been a long time since I've seen a player who looked that bad for us, let alone a first rounder.

At least Stan gave Jon Leuer $40 mil to play that role....

But then he signed someone who actually did a solid job in that role we probably can't afford to resign because of all the money handed out to useless players.

Sadly, that was quite a long time ago. Nearly a decade since we drafted him.
We've been treadmilling with subpar late lottery picks for a pretty long time.
I do think Ellenson was significantly worse though, and the stats bare that out.

I really wanted Jrue Holiday that draft, but PG was "covered" by Stuckey.

Caris LeVert would've been good.
Anyway, Van Gundy is a moron. He signed Jon Leuer to a vastly oversized deal two weeks after drafting Ellenson, then did the same thing with Galloway and Kennard a year later.

Leuer deal made sense but definitely not at that size of a contract for both players. PF was needed then so Leuer wasn't a bad decision. Galloway wasn't needed though that's for sure.
