24 Hours Later - How do you feel about the Hawks Draft?

Post#1 » by pacehawk » Fri Jun 22, 2018 11:15 pm

I will admit that I was shocked and greatly disappointed last night after the Hawks drafted Doncic (I was doing some really good celebrations when they announced that the Hawks had chosen him!) but that excitement quickly came to disbelief when they made the trade! I have been reading a lot of Draft Grades today and surprisingly to me that most of them gave the Hawks really good grades! I hope they are right and I am wrong but I still would have kept Doncic! How do you feel 24 hours later? I hope you feel better than I do!

I had a really similar reaction initially, but I’m starting to dig it. We went out of our way to surround him with shooters which I love! As long as he can hit those pull up 35 footers and force teams to cover him out to half court, I expect our offense to look a lot different

I don’t like it but I’m trying to think positive.

I like it.
We had a true plan and we selected everyone that we wanted in the first round.
I'm thankful we didn't draft a guyin the first to stash overseas. We have three rookies that will be ready.

You guys added 3 great shooters and acquired a future first round pick. I thought the hawks had an excellent night

I was about 90% sure that we would trade down and draft Trae, so I wasn't surprised. I see doncic as being good, but not great. At least not superstar great. I figured it made sense to get more assets and trade down. I would be upset if we drafted Trae at 3 straight up with no first round pick on top. I think Trae is more risky but I value them very similar

I feel even worst now...

Looking at the 2019 draft is depressing. Just watch and see, RJ Barrett will shoot 60% from the free throw line as a freshmen and have the same hype and career as Justise Winslow. :(

I also was almost sure for month that Schlenck didn't want the top pick because he would pick Trae Young. Based on that, he picked well the draft since these players match his plan.

Now, is it the best plan to be a contender ? Yet to know.
The thing I still don't like is that in almost any case, the team that had traded up (or traded for if without pick) for a specific player has always got the best player and an all-star. I hope it will be the opposite this time

It worked out good for Boston last year...but then again fultz had lots of injuries issues. We will see.

I feel the same now as I did on draft night.

Trae Young has *I-N-S-A-N-E* range, he's fast, and he can run an offense. The potential is there for him to be a star. At the very least, he will be a Jason Terry type of utility shooter. I like him and I have always liked him, Bagley, Ayton, Luca, and Porter (injury notwithstanding obv.). So we got one of the guys that I liked. I just liked Luca better.

I wasn't "Luca or bust!" as some were but he did separate himself from the pack for me. I'm not going to start rattling off all the positives, but as far as prospects go, even if he were to totally bust, you can't fault picking him there at 3. The only real knock on him is the Euro-stereotype, which is sometimes very valid...but silly when you compare Luca's package. On top of all the positives, he's a damn leader. For a franchise looking for an identity, looking for leadership, a winning attitude, and in dire need of buzz - Luca was the right choice to make.

I'm over it though. I'm more worried about where that pick falls, developing Trae, and getting rid of Denns.

Seriously. This almost never bodes well for the team that gives up the high ground. Coupled with the player comparisons, I'm stupidly anxious about seeing Trae get to work with our guys.

I am just worried that we will be a month into the season and Luka is putting up good numbers because Trae isn't getting the pt due to Dennis.

What are the protections on the pick?

There's examples of teams that trade down and still win. Most recently, Fultz-Tatum trade.
