anyone else excited about this upcoming season now?

Post#1 » by HornetsFan29 » Sun Jun 24, 2018 3:12 pm

I gotta admit I am after the draft and knowing Kemba is now here to stay and we had a solid draft and ship Dwights drama out of here.

Kemba/Graham
Lamb/Monk
Batum/Bridges/Bacon
MKG/Marv
Cody/Frank/Willie/Mozgov

Not bad we should be able to contend for a playoff spot in the east my guess is anywhere from 5-8th.

Mitch could also make a trade to make us better so we will have to wait and see there but I am looking foward to the season now we have a solid roster aslong as we can avoid the injury bug that has bit us the last few years.

Like chances for the playoffs, but not good enough to make any playoff noise just yet. Let's see what else Mitch has up his sleeve though.

On a side note, we are still not 100% guaranteed that Kemba will be here. Mitch made it obvious we would like to keep him, but he also said that his contract situation could be difficult and he didn't want to lose him to free agency. This is GM talk for, sure we want to keep him, but we would rather trade him than lose him for nothing. The trade has more of a chance in July than it had at the draft. Cleveland has no pick next year, therefore had to make a pick this year. We werent adding our pick to Kemba in a trade, so the only way to do it is to agree on a trade, the Cavs make the pick for us, then complete the trade in July. I'm not advocating for this to happen, but we should all be cautious in assuming that this situation is over

It's a good start to the offseason, I still need to see if we trade the right player(s) but the needle is definitely pointed at the positive gauge at the moment.

I think the roster is good enough, the coaching is the big question mark.

Excited about Summer League at the very least. I want to see if there are any more trades and how the backup PG spot is addressed before I get too excited.
My picks:
2020 Draft (3rd pick) - Tyrese Haliburton, Devin Vassell, or Onyeka Okongwu
2021 Draft (11th pick) - Moses Moody

As someone who watched most of our games last year, no I'm not.

This roster basically has the same expectations as last years and then we have to sign Kemba to a max which makes any future progress bleak.

If we trade Kemba, then I'll be excited.

This season will be a pretty unique opportunity for us to see how much of what we perceive to be player development issues is on Cliff, and how much is just on the guys we drafted. If MKG and Cody come out launching threes it's going to be apparent that Cliff just didn't know what he was doing.

I wouldn't say excited, but im definitely more interested this season.

things im interested in.

: How Monk improves
: MKG/Miles competition at SF
: See the new system
: See if Willy is as good as he was last season
: If Frank improves

Hopefully Nic plays well enough to make him tradeable.

I dont really have expectations, my assumption is we dont make the playoffs but will at least be bearable to watch.

This is my worst fear. Another treadmill year, Kemba walks for nothing, but we are good enough to not have a shot at RJ Barrett in the draft

A little bit of the unknown is always exciting, and we've had a lot more change this summer than the last few years.

Personally I'm excited to see what our new coach is like, what pace he gets us to play, what rotations he uses, etc. This year is also the true make or break year for the entire core. Turn things around in a hurry or radically change course when Kemba leaves, no in-between. I'm very much looking forward to it, and hoping that (for once) things break our way.

Absolutely excited. Not because I expect them to contend for anything, cause they might compete for the 8th spot. I am thrilled to have a new coaching staff and GM. If we can somehow trade one of our bloated contracts before the season I will be ecstatic! Ideally deal Batum, but Marv would also be welcome to leave. Deal MKG or bring him off the bench...do NOT start him. If Noc is still here he must play the 3 and allow Lamb to start.
I continue to wait...and hope...for the return to Hornet's glory.

Man I wish I could get as excited as you guys, but I just can't. When you look at our line up and depth chart, it's easy to argue that we are in the bottom 5-10 when it comes to talent. Unless Monk, Cody, or Willy have a breakout season, then we are gonna have a similar season to last. Maybe we have slight improvement due to coaching change, so perhaps instead of winning 34-36 and getting an 11th pick, we finish with 38-40 wins and get a 13th pick. I think the best possible, realistic outcome of next season is that by the time December hits, and we have our typical awful start, our front office will realize this team hit it's ceiling in 2016, and decides to blow it up and tank for Barret. I mean you know things are kinda sad when the fan base is hoping that Cody Zeller is gonna have a healthy breakout season

1. Cho is gone and his replacement is a vet GM.
2. We didn't deal Kemba draft day and own his Bird Rights.
3. I expect Kupchak/Borrego to invest in the develelopment of younger players surrounding Kemba.
3a) Clifford is gone and that means more PT for Lamb, Monk and Kaminsky, less time for Marvin + MKG.
3b) Dwight is gone so Cody and Hernangomez get promotions. Both play team ball and fit modern NBA.
4. Batum will be more dangerous playing more with Lamb, Monk, Kaminsky, Cody and Hernangomez. He's a good facilitator and plays team ball. They will be the beneficiares. He's good for their development, as is Kemba.
5. We drafted MKG's replacement, marking two drafts in a row where I got my target. I was willing to trade up both years, I was so hell-bent on getting them. I like the idea of selecting mature college players as well, especially if they're to be entrusted running a whole unit.
6. I suspect Kupchak will move MKG. I've wanted him gone since his second season. Bonus if he moves Marvin as well.
7. Borrego wants to play uptempo and we have the youth for it. It fits Kemba, Monk, Miles and Cody. All four are keepers.

There's more but I think you guys get the picture. I'm really happy.

Curious is the word I'd use. The only thing I'm excited about is not seeing Clifford stalk the sideline yelling "Dig!"

I think people need to tamper their expectations on coach Borrego. He hasn't even coached a single preseason game for us yet, but a lot of you guys are acting like he is as good as Greg Popovich and Brad Stevens when it comes to player development. Lets not get to excited about him till his impact actually shows on the court. Who knows, he could be even worse for our young players then Cliff was. Extremely unlikely, but you never really know with generally unknown coaches in this league.

I am not very excited yet but that can change in the next few weeks. I will be much more excited if we can make some moves. It can be either moving Kemba and setting up a rebuild or moving pieces to get better fits to try to play well enough to keep Kemba. If we don't make a significant change I will dread the whole season that the worst case will happen and we will miss the playoffs and Kemba will leave and we will get nothing for him setting us back over a year.

Great post, I agree with what you wrote and would add that I think/hope -
Monk is going to break out and show us what got him drafted in the first place. I think he is like having an extra lottery pick this year, one who has a little bit of pro game experience to build off
Frank is likely to have a really nice season when he finally gets a chance to play minutes over Marv
Miles should start over MKG from the get go
Batum will make a much bigger positive contribution again with the healed elbow
Willy plays well as back up C
Lamb has his best year yet
Devonte looks like a winner and a baller with moxie
Kemba is freed from the Dwightmare goes nutz and we get our team spirit back
Hopefully we can add a good combo G with the MLE

The Hornets will be much more fun to watch, with lots of 3 pters, running and dunking
I think we can win 45+ and maybe even win a playoff series
