The problem is Leonard's desire to go to LA. Who is willing to give up a major asset for a one year rental out east?

I wouldn't consider Beal or Porter for a one year rental. Maybe a package built Oubre & Sato with add'l filler?

I don't see any team giving up anything valuable for Leonard unless they are convinced that there's a good possibility that he'd be more than a one-year rental. Right now, Kawhi seems determined to end up in LA at least by the 2019-20 season and that's a problem in any trade scenario...other than a trade to one of the LA teams.

I'd be reluctant to trade Oubre and Sato for Leonard if I didn't think I could sign Kawhi to a long-term deal.

It might be worth it for one season. Even with no modern C on the roster I think we could legitimately challenge Boston and Philly in the East for a spot in the Finals.

I’m guessing Oubre may be a top free agent target for the Kings in 19. I’m not sure Washington could in anyway match. We certainly wouldn’t make a trade to free up cap space for you so you could keep him. Nets are likely in the same boat.

That’s the Wizards biggest problem... no one who has cap space projected for 19 has any motivation to take your Mahinmi because it lets you out of the box. They would all rather keep you there and make an offer on Oubre you can’t possibly match.

I mean, if you wanna overpay for Oubre and not get a free asset for taking on a contract, go right ahead.

The Kings should probably start making some good moves after that brutal pick of Bagley over Doncic&Jackson though..

Gortat, Morris, and Smith for Gallo and Williams (Non-Guaranteed, Waived).

Wall
Beal / Sato
Otto / Oubre
Gallo
Mahinmi

We get right at the Tax line (about 1-2M over). Puts us in striking distance to move Meeks and get under tax line at deadline.
Its a risk, but our team becomes really dynamic
LAC does this as a way to clear Gallos salary next year, yet take on rotation caliber players who will contribute. They add salary, but stay under tax.

We clearly go into the tax in 19/20, but not the repeater tax. The following year, we get out from under Gallo and Mahinmi and go back under the tax... which would again allow us to stay out of the repeater tax for 2 more years (Which appears to be the line in the sand)

Not the biggest fan of the trade, but was the only iteration of this trade that really works without giving up assets and Mahinmi...it also puts us in contention in the east

And last year if they didn't sign George Hill, Zach Randolph and Vince Carter (although only one year). They could have taken on lots of bad contracts and added even more assets.

Besides the Dallas trade, here are a couple of Gortat trades to get us under tax.... "Filler" = Smith and/or Meeks

Pacers: Gortat, Smith, Meeks, and Oubre for Joseph, Jefferson (Stretched) & Leaf
- We save 15M which gives us room to sign Noel and stay under tax.
- Indy upgrades their backup C with Gortat. Sabonis emergence makes Leaf redundant, get better prospect/fit in Oubre.

Wall / Joseph
Beal / Sato / Brown
Otto / Sato / Brown
Morris / Leaf
Mahinmi / Noel

**** A simpler iteration could be done, but basics is Gortat + filler for Jefferson

Hawks: Gortat + 2nd for Dedmon

Bulls: Gortat + filler for Felicio (Hate this one)
- Gortat + Filler for Asik (Stretched) would be more palatable

Philly: Gortat, 2019 1st, Filler for Bayless & Korkmaz

When we start getting into attaching assets to move salary, I wonder, why not just go ahead and move Mahinmi instead?

We only need the room exception or the MLE to sign Noel I would think. Hell, we could simply stretch Mahinmi and sign Noel.

Ideally you just send Gortat+2019 2nd somewhere, even if you have to take some salary back. Just make that MLE room. All we need.

Way too much is right. You are basically just going for it for one year and then going back to square one the following season. You also have to wonder WTF is going on with his leg.

I personally think that it would only the Kelley or the 2019 first to move ian.
I mean, We took Brown, we still have porter and still have robinson. So, I feel like kelley might be the asset we are willing to move, plus, robinson if he plays well will be worlds cheaper than resigning kelley.
Ian and kelley for an expiring wes mathews and filler would work.
Chandler and dudley for kelley, ian and smith works.
(2 of ) Some combo of temple, kosta and shumpert for ian and kelley works too.
I hate loosing kelley but if we don't intend to pay him, and EG is not going anywhere any time soon, then us him to at least get Ian off our books so we have room to breath. OE swap kelley for a filler deal and add 2019 first to these to get rid of ian so we in theory have a little money to sign kelley, which we actually don't have considering johns pay raise thats coming I believe after next seasons?

Gortat in an interview said that he was probably gonna be traded to a Western Conference team, because that's how moves are done in the NBA. Just fyi what he said. And since he's after some talks with the FO, he might know more than we can suspect.

I disagree. That's ridiculously cheap even without assurances Kawhi will re-sign. It would never happen, but if they could swing a Kawhi deal without giving up Wall, Beal, or Otto it's a no-brainer. If he's back to 100% as reported, that team is a legit title contender. I'd take the chance that a successful season would give us a decent chance to re-sign him.

We'd be a legit contender for at least one season.

Losing Brown Jr, the 2019 1st & Sato stings but its a small price to pay IMO. I'd sacrifice two prospects and a role player for an opportunity at accomplishing something very special.

One reason that the top teams separate from the rest is being perceived as a contender is very attractive to vet players. Especially ones who have already made a lot of money. This helps in initial FA and after the deadline when players are bought out. I think the chances are pretty good that the short term loss of at least Tomas could be replaced in this manner.

Agreed. And then we could do the complete rebuild the following year. Jettison everyone but Beal and Porter.

I think they would rather have Mahinmi completely off the books rather than him being stretched over the next 5 years. Ernie is probably trading him in February or next offseason by attaching the 2019 draft pick.

Terrible idea IMO. A 1 year rental on a guy that just missed the entire 2017-2018 season due to injury. We would have no depth and still wouldn’t beat the warriors if we even made it that far.
