'18 Vegas Summer League

Post#1 » by thesack12 » Mon Jun 25, 2018 10:50 pm

Looks like Detroit's summer league kicks off on Friday July 6, @ 7 pm ET against the Bucks....

Looks like Henry is in for the 3rd time

Henry Ellenson - F - Pistons

Henry Ellenson will play in the Summer League.

Ellenson has only appeared in 57 games through two seasons with Detroit, but there's some optimism within the franchise that he'll take a step forward this season. Coach Dwane Casey called Ellenson one of his core six players, and the backup power forward role is ripe for the taking with Anthony Tolliver hitting free agency. If last summer is any indication, Ellenson could dominate in Vegas.

I’m so glad to be back in Vegas. Stan selfishly wanting to be in Orlando because of his off season was offputting

Luke Kennard
Henry Ellenson
Khyri Thomas
Bruce Brown Jr

Invitees -
PF-Obi Enechionyia
SG-Zach Lofton
PF-Eric Griffin
G-Khadeen Carrington
G-Scottie Lindsey

Invitees seem to be scrub as hell. I guess that happens when we don't offer 2-way deals like other teams have, or partially guaranteed deals for that matter.

Yeah, none of those names stand out to me. In years past there have been a few recognizable names as invitees Moreland, Deandre Liggins, Lorenzo Brown, etc.

Regarding 2 way contracts, I personally have no qualms moving on from both Felder and Hearn. I know a lot of people like him (probably because he's a local guy) but I haven't ever seen anything out of Felder which would suggest he's worth keeping around. With both Brown and Thomas now coming in, I see no reason to keep an extra wing around like Hearn who doesn't seem to have any upside.

Yeah, I want nothing to do with Hearn or Felder. I hope both are gone and we aim higher with our two-way deals. Neither Hearn or Felder are NBA players.

Buycks was solid for us. Not sure I'd bring him back on a NBA deal though.

G-League DPOY and GR Drive center Landry Nnoko signed on to play with Miami Heat SL team. We don't seem to have any centers on the SL squad. Could mean Ellenson will get all the minutes there.

I personally like Buycks more than most, I think they'd be hard pressed to find a better 3rd PG for the type of money Buycks would be making.

I agree Henry will likely be gobbling up all of the center minutes in Vegas. That said, I don't think the team is going to worry too much about positional balance with the summer league roster.

Do we know that's still happening? It was Stan, before he got fired, who said he was going to try Luke at pg in the summer league.

I'm curious whether the author of the twitter post
got their info based on what SVG said in May. I doubt whether Casey has said anything about Luke Kennard playing point guard in summer league.

If Kennard plays some PG in Vegas, its likely just a matter of opening up more minutes for Thomas and Brown.

I wouldn't look too deeply into it.

Pg is Lukes best nba position, i said that when he got drafted. He has shooting and decision making and size for the position, and its the only place he can be a plus size-wise. A forward thinking team would train him to play pg just to get the best value in his game.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

SVG's biggest mistake last year was not playing Luke at PG when RJ went down. Luke's handles and play making were both much better than I realized before he was drafted and its something we should have looked to develop more as his rookie season progressed. We're in a league where almost all guards need to be able to both shoot, and bring the ball up and start the offense, and be able to break down the defense and penetrate to create an open jumper for a teammate.

It was in a Vince Ellis article, he got it directly from the coaches mouth.

It was explained that Stan doesn't like to put too much on his rookies and thought the moment would be too big for Kennard. Rather than seeing if they could rise to it, he assumed he would fail in it and wanted to protect him from it.

Stan was too busy trying to force Andre to turn into Dwight Howard and Luke into JJ Redick.

There's a SL (not Vegas) that starts on 7/2 and likely will have the games televised somewhere. I like SL as you get a first look at the rooks. That, and since I can't watch baseball it gives me something during the summer sports drought.

https://www.detroitbadboys.com/2018/6/12/17457012/nba-detroit-pistons-las-vegas-summer-league-schedule

Pistons vs. Bucks July 6, 7 p.m. NBA TV
Pistons vs. Grizzlies July 7, 9 p.m. NBA TV
Pistons vs. Pelicans July 9, 3 p.m. ESPNU

Following that 3-game schedule the entire league will enter a seeded tournament with a championship game set for July 17. Each team will play at least five games (3 scheduled plus two in the tournament) and as many as eight.

Additionally, all Summer League games will be available via the ESPN app, along with 46 games on either ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPNU. Additionally, NBA TV will air 36 games.

Jaren Jackson of Memphis looks to be the only "headliner" Detroit will be facing before the tournament.

How can you properly seed 30 teams after three games played?

VSL is too big. I'd rather just set up something around here, or just not even go and just have a mini-camp sorta deal.
