Khyri Thomas would be a steal

Post#1 » by pistons4ever » Tue Apr 10, 2018 3:31 am

My personal dream for the second round pick would be khyri... He has pistons DNA all over him... He is projected as a 1st round pick but of he falls go and get him... I even would try to get a late first rounder for him.. Trade our second plus future ones or Ellenson... This kid will be a steal outside the lottery.....

Well, he has SVG pick written all over him, as he'd be a 23 year old rookie.

I haven't even bothered to look at the draft prospects. I don't expect anything with the 42nd pick.

The steal of the draft would LiAngelo Ball.

But in all seriousness, 2nd round pick is not going to change anything. There's only so many Draymond Greens out there.

I dont mind these threads. Ever since that "WE HAVE TO GET DRUMMOND" thread was made right when he got to UConn I've learned to pay attention to these names.

aaaand boom goes the dynamite.

Good call though, dude looks to have fallen through the cracks and could even be a threat to get minutes right away.

Anyone that says they know Khyri's game from watching a bunch of Creighton's games is a liar and their breath stinks.

Khyri was a late bloomer in high school and continued to improve each season at creighton. Coach McDermott offered him a scholarship the second he decided to go to prep school for a year. He had little guard skills in high school but by the time he got to Creighton he was ready to play significant minutes as a freshman. He started shooting the ball with consistency his sophomore year and last year started driving it to the rim.

He has improved immensely since his junior year in high school and I don't think he's done quite yet. Can't be understated how unskilled he was. Basically a 6'3 power forward in Omaha. He is long and strong and has a good sense for the game.

When I watched his game film I thought of Joe Dumars as well. He looks like a major steal and someone who will be crack the rotation at a position of need.

Fair point. Super common outcome from second round picks!

Well, of course not!? The point remains that second round picks seek that guy about whom there are questions but in the end proves the doubters wrong. High probability? No, but that's what you're hoping. Guys who are mocked in the 1st but fall aren't a bad place to look. We'll have a better idea in a few weeks.

One thing that excites me about these picks is the fact that they are both similar to Ed Stefanskis pick last year: Dillon Brooks,
Who ended up being a steal. Massively productive as a late pick, was really productive as a rookie.

I feel confident that Ed Stefanski sees what the game is today. He has a plan he's picking athletic, defense first players with length and a specific offensive skill. That's all you can ask for in a 2nd rounder.
You need 2-way wings, 2-way shooting bigs, and you can't allow low iq players on the court. Assist/turnover ratio is crucial. Shooting point guards are icing on the cake IF they are plus defenders.
Weaver & Casey, govern yourselves accordingly!

Khyri won't be 23 for about 310 days, so if he's playing at 23 years old next season that means we'd be in the 2nd round of the playoffs

Historically, guys who are 22+ that are taken in the 2nd round have a far better shot at sticking in the NBA. Just glancing at the last handful of drafts you've got some every year:

Dillon Brooks - 22yrs
Jordan Bell - 23yrs
Malcom Brogdon - 24yrs
Josh Richardson - 22yrs
Joe Harris - 23yrs
James Ennis - 24yrs
Jae Crowder - 22yrs
Draymond Green - 22yrs
Will Barton - 22yrs
IT - 22yrs
Bojan Bogdanovic - 22yrs (started playing at 25)

I'm all for swinging for the fences on lotto picks, but ultra-raw 19 year olds who fall to pick #44 or whatever have such a low success rate. Especially on a team that isn't bottoming out for the next few years where they'll have no chance to play.

We didn't even swing for the fences with 2-way contracts. You can bet we'll use them on ready-to-contribute types once the off-season dust settles.
