Re: Draft day open thread and Offseason Rumors
Why would a team about to be under the cap need him to opt in to get traded though? don't get me wrong, I'm happy to get any assets from him, but I'm struggling to see the reasoning from Dallas' side

If DAJ opts in, the Clippers will be well into the tax for another consecutive year and I'm quite sure they'd rather not be. Dallas could offer a deal like Dwight Powell for DAJ, and while that would never normally fly, the tax savings to the Clippers *would* be an asset. It'd be a great deal for Dallas and possibly a tolerable one for LAC.
The Clippers' leverage depends on how willing they are to pay the tax. Will they hold on to DAJ if they can't get a trade, or at least bluff it?

Clippers are under the tax this year already (slightly, by like $80k I think), and will surely be again next year just by not re-signing Bradley.
Don't think they're gonna absorb Powell's contract, they reportedly refused offer that included a first round pick last trade deadline because they included absorbing contracts like John Henson and Tristan Thompson, and they wanted to preserve cap for 2019.

Matthews straight up if they think they might be moving some of their guards in other deals?

Ooof that's a tuff one, the Clippers currently have Rivers, Lou, Sindarius, CJ Williams and just drafted Ferguson at SG. While having Bradley expiring and Wallace as a RFA. They need to trade like two or three of those guys while not adding any other SG imo, half the roster is basically players similar to Wes' profile. They need bigger and younger wings and big men, not more SG's. Really struggling to see a deal here, but I'm intrigued about what other things they could have on the table.
Any deal surely does have to include Matthews or Barnes just to match salary, so who knows.

Dallas has some cap space (and can make more by waiving cap holds, notably Noel and McDermott). They can absorb extra salary.

This has gotten lots of talk locally in Dallas. And the thinking seems to be Dallas isn't ready to make a long-term commitment to him so getting him to opt in and agree to a trade allows them to see how well he fits the new young core without tying themselves to him.
I'm assuming Dallas is not thinking about giving up any real value outside of salary relief here. Not sure if the Clippers are willing to essentially be giving him away, but Dallas really has nothing to trade for him so....

Re: Draft day open thread and Offseason Rumors
Oh yeah, I didn't realise the Mavs still had that much capspace open. It still is not enough to absorb DJ, so one of these three has to be included:
Powell - negative value, don't see why the Clippers do it
Barnes - too much value, don't see why the Mavs do it
Matthews - kind of pointless for both sides, contributes to the Clippers guard glut and takes away minutes from the young guys, while it takes away a useful veteran from Dallas who could slot very well as a place holder between Smith and Doncic.
Stein said it's a long shot though, so it probably ends up being nothing.

Re: Draft day open thread and Offseason Rumors
S&T Noel to the Clippers as part of the return? That could make some sense. As I've mentioned in other threads (usually about Washington), Noel could get both a starting gig and more than the MLE, and he might not find either if he goes to the FA market.

Seems like a deal will get done with all this talk.

Re: Draft day open thread and Offseason Rumors
Interesting additionally because the MLE is really the only plausible way the Grizzlies have of bringing back Tyreke Evans since they don't have Bird rights.
Is Bradley just a Plan B (or C)? Evans had a really nice season and will surely draw interest if the Griz move on.

New York said Mitchell wasn't the guy you trade the sink for, then they traded it for Mikal, lol.

Not when I wrote that he hadn't

Spears reporting both Lakers and Pels having talk with Boogie.

Makes sense. Lakers have to add someone or I think LBJ stays. Spurs don't appear to be in any rush to trade Leonard (nor should they be).
